This is far too common a practice and on Nintendo consoles, it's usually just third-parties. With MS, it's all of them. At least they are recognizing people don't like it.
The only way this console would have a chance is if MS pulls a (rumored) Sony and keeps single player games off PS hardware. Other than that, they shouldn't expect to sell this device to the mass market.
This thing won't be affordable and MS still has its work cut out for it. I don't see the value proposition of a console that plays PC games as well, but someone might.
I don't see why Sony would feel PS5/6 sales would be affected if the next Xbox can play first-party games via Steam because why would you choose to skip PS to play Xbox and PS games when you can do that with your PS6 and presumably play at least from PS4 to PS6 on one device? Wouldn't make any sense to change ecosystems now.
Genie's out of the bottle, they really won't be able to put it back in. Tbh, that isn't a good thing. Even partly unchecked Sony (which we have now) is a bad thing. They've required proprietary memory for their consoles in previous generations and would do that now if they could. Make no mistake, if they can remove Nintendo from the equation then you'll see that mask come off. Yes, Nintendo is a competitor of Sony's based on how they have recently been aggressively "lowering" PS5 prices to get headlines that they "won" in hardware sales for x month (yes, those headlines matter if you follow the industry closely enough).
I love how gamers, as people who were once outcasts, have been bullies to people that are generally down trodden. It really shows our self-awareness and humility.
Not surprised. Everyone acts like this isn't an industry-wide issue. I doubt the price is exactly what people were expecting, either. I.e., it's higher than they'd hoped.
@Gabrie I've had my eShop games for 8 years now. The reason 3DS and Wii U were closed is because of form factor and many of those games were ported over to Switch and now playable on NS2. The argument that they "may go away in a few years" could theoretically apply to anything digital so I consider that a moot point. I meant from a practical standpoint everything someone buys on Switch/2 is playable anywhere (and on one device) because of the form factor of the console.
I guess when you give people no reason to buy a console, you won't sell them. Now, the usual suspects are shifting the argument from "exclusives don't sell consoles" to "well, they don't WANT to sell consoles!"
And make no mistake, I believe MS is and was capable of improving Xbox sales. Clearly, the people at the top don't feel that is meaningful to the overall company. This is one example of why having multiple streams of revenue isn't always good for a specific brand within a company.
None of this surprises me in the short to medium term as billionaires insist "we need AI" to improve society. They are using tons of capital to make their utopian (not for society at large, of course) vision of the future a reality.
And as others have said, PS5/XSX are now just starting to get going software-wise. Look at 2026's release schedule for both as proof.
Seems like everyone had a good time with E33. I'll play it, eventually. Same with Avowed and Outer Worlds 2, the latter of which I haven't played the prequel.
I felt that splitting the campaign and multiplayer up was a bad idea because why buy the game if the main draw is free? The mechanics are fun enough, though.
Not the end of the world, but I hope that rep was wrong because the other consoles are getting free upgrades while Xbox owners are being left out in the cold if true.

Re: Starfield Gets Major Free Update & New Expansion Next Month, Alongside PS5 Release
This is pretty big with the other changes made. Kind of makes me wish I hadn't beaten it a while back.
Re: Xbox Announces Policy Changes To Treat Games More 'Fairly' On The Microsoft Store
This is far too common a practice and on Nintendo consoles, it's usually just third-parties. With MS, it's all of them. At least they are recognizing people don't like it.
Re: Capcom Is Ready To Unleash Pragmata Early As Release Date Gets Brought Forward
This is really good news. Hope ppl with Xbox as their primary console enjoy this one! I will probably get Forza as my next Xbox game, tho.
Re: 'It Will Lead In Performance' - Xbox's Price Tag For Project Helix Could Be Pretty High

Re: Next Xbox Console Could Be Affected By PlayStation Pulling Back On PC
A rumor about a rumor. What a world we live in.

I think they should, but they won't.

Did I say "love"? I meant to say "hate."
Re: Xbox's 'Pivot Away From Console' Had Been Failing And Questioned At Microsoft, Claims Report
Gonna be hard to put the genie back in the bottle, but if they do, I don't hate it.
Re: Xbox Creator Reveals His Two Tips For The New Microsoft Gaming CEO
Feels like this whole thing won't go down well for fans of Xbox consoles. Of course, I could be wrong.
Re: 'No Tolerance For Bad AI' - New Xbox Boss Says Games Need 'Great Stories Created By Humans'
It's unfortunate that AI, in the same way we think of it now, is here to stay.
Re: New Xbox Boss Makes Official Statement As She Takes Over From Phil Spencer
Won't be an easy task, but I'm sure she won't be able to succeed (which is by design).
@martynstuff random Cornershop references, ftw.
Re: 'I Felt Incredibly Emotional' - Peter Molyneux Shares His Reaction To Xbox's Fable Reveal
Credit to him for not feeling salty about it. Sure, he can't really "do" anything if it upset him, but still.
Re: Sony Is Hosting A Huge State Of Play This Week, Do You Think We'll Get Any Big Xbox Reveals?
Since there'll be third-party games, it's basically a guarantee something in the showcase will come to Xbox.

"It's so bad, we're paying you for playing it!" Amirite?!
Re: Three Xbox Games Dated For Nintendo Switch 2, Starfield Also Rumoured For PS5 In April
Indy is on the cartridge, I can imagine the Switch 2 version will sell pretty well in that case.

That would honestly make some of my PC buys easier to roll over...

That would be nice.
Re: Xbox Series X|S Ranked 5th In List Of Platforms Developers Are Most Interested In
@Ichiban exactly. Even my coffee table is an Xbox!
Re: Microsoft CFO Admits Xbox Revenue Was 'Below Expectations' In FY26 Q2
@Trmn8r exactly this. MS is not even trying to sell consoles, it seems.
Re: Rumour: Xbox Might Be Planning A Second Developer Direct Showcase For 2026
Given there are still some major games without specific release dates, that would make sense.
Re: In The US, 66% Of Xbox Series X|S Sales Were Digital-Only In 2025
@FraserG you're probably right.
Re: Roundup: Here's What Was Revealed At The Xbox Developer Direct 2026 Showcase
Good looking games. If they don't end up on NS2, I'll give them a whirl on Xbox.
Re: Roundup: The First Reviews Are In For Final Fantasy 7 Remake On Xbox Series X
Awesome news for Xbox players. I never doubted this would be a great version of this game.

Switch 2 is "Play Anywhere" by default. I can play it at home or on the go.
Re: Poll: What Are Your First Impressions Of Star Wars Outlaws On Xbox Game Pass?
@Scrubchub agreed, a very small number of very loud people made this game sound terrible. It's actually really fun.

Ah, the return of COD on a Nintendo console. I wonder if it uses mouse mode...
Re: Xbox Gives Refunds For Red Dead Redemption Following Recent Upgrade Issues
I was lucky enough to get it for free because I waited. Didn't seem worth paying for a game I beat recently (last year).
Re: Avowed Releases For PS5 Alongside Free 'Anniversary Update' On Xbox This February
Well, not long to wait for the new content. It was a good idea to hold off on starting this game, apparently.
Re: Former Elder Scrolls Online Boss Says Xbox Cancellation Drove Him To Leave Bethesda
@VeganH as pointed out by a commenter who replied to me, it appears this (or a variation thereof) is happening. They formed Sackbird studios.
Re: Former Elder Scrolls Online Boss Says Xbox Cancellation Drove Him To Leave Bethesda
Maybe we can get what Blackbird was supposed to be from a new studio.
Re: Xbox Console Sales 'The Worst On Record' In 2025 As Microsoft Shifts Focus (UK)
@Weebleman probably so, but you'd think their first statement was true. If MS were smart, they would have kept their games exclusive.

No way!!!
Re: Matt Booty Explains Why Xbox Ditched Its $80 Price Tag For Outer Worlds 2 & Other Games
Mark my words, the MSRP of $80 will become more common going forward.
Re: Red Dead Redemption Free Upgrade Still Not Working For Some As Players Voice Frustrations
I was able to get mine to work. Undead Nightmare is really fun, so far.
Re: Talking Point: Four Years On, Did Halo Infinite Ever Live Up To Expectations?
I felt that splitting the campaign and multiplayer up was a bad idea because why buy the game if the main draw is free? The mechanics are fun enough, though.
Re: Need A Reason To Play Fallout 76 Again? It's Just Released A Massive New Update
This game gets more hate than it deserves, imo. I played it a few days ago and had a blast.
Re: Red Dead Redemption's Free Upgrade Is Finally Rolling Out For Xbox Series X|S
Grabbed it right away. I actually didn't pay for this game on Xbox so I can't believe I'm getting Undead Nightmare for free.
Re: Poll: Did You Receive The Free Upgrade For Red Dead Redemption On Xbox?
Oh, nice. They are going to resolve the issue.
Edit: Yes, I started Undead Nightmare last night. It's a little surreal I got this and the 360 version for free when I paid for the OG on PS3.
Re: PSA: Red Dead Redemption For Xbox Series X|S Is Part Of The $7.99 GTA+ Subscription
Unfortunately, I won't do this.

Re: Hands On: Red Dead Redemption For Xbox Series X Makes A Great First Impression
Undead Nightmare, here I come!
Re: Talking Point: Will You Be Revisiting Red Dead Redemption On Xbox Next Week?
Undead Nightmare is calling my name, so yes.
