Xbox has revealed its next steps in the company's continued reset, but it's still uncertain what the future holds for Marvel's Blade developer Arkane Studios.
In a company-wide message, Xbox CCO Matt Booty detailed the next wave of layoffs, the future of Halo, Forza and Fable, as well as restructuring Activision, Bethesda and King. He also hinted that we'll have to wait a little longer for any news on the state of Arkane.
"Consultation with Arkane remains underway and is expected to continue through the end of the year."
We've not heard much about Arkane's Blade. Back in May, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bethesda boss Todd Howard casually remarked that he "saw some stuff just yesterday and the folks at Arkane are doing a really, really great job".
Just mere days later, reports emerged from The Verge claiming that "Microsoft wants to cancel Blade as part of a wave of cost cuts and job losses". Then, during Xbox's 3,200 announced job cuts back in July, Arkane Studios began consultation with the French Works Council to review strategic options.
Booty's latest update goes on to summarise how Microsoft has divested from July's five at-risk development studios, providing details on Compulsion and Double Fine's return to management with their IP and funding. He also shared an update on what's going on with Undead Labs and Ninja Theory.
"Third, an update on our studio divestitures: In August, Compulsion and Double Fine returned to management with their IP, back catalogs, and runway funding. Undead Labs has now successfully transitioned on similar terms and, with a new publisher, will release State of Decay 3 day one on Game Pass. Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward."
Marvel's Blade is believed to still be in full development at Arkane Lyon. Even if there's an err of uncertainty surrounding whether it'll be part of Xbox or not, the official word out of Arkane remains: "Let us cook".
