The Previews Are In For DOOM: The Ark Ages - Revelations DLC 1

Last year in May, DOOM: The Dark Ages properly pumped up its players with its medieval setting, gnarly tunes and an equally badass skull-crushing shotgun.

id Software's flagship shooter saw generally favourable review scores upon release - we even awarded it a cracking 9/10, whilst The Dark Ages is currently sat at a score of 83 on Metacritic.

In less than a week, DOOM: The Dark Ages will get its first major expansion, Revelations, featuring "an all-new campaign expansion" and up to "10-12 hours" of carnage.

Multiple outlets were recently invited to a hands-off preview of DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations, and here's what they had to say:

Push Square

All told, id Software is projecting Revelations to almost the same length as the base game — if you were to mainline it, that is. It's a substantial add-on that leans into all the best bits of DOOM: The Dark Ages, whilst giving you a new toy to play with and an intriguing structure that extends the levels beyond one playthrough. We might have had to wait a while for it to launch, but Revelations arrives bursting with content and more excellent FPS action. The chances you'll have another great time with the Doom Slayer are as close to certain as possible.

(We) recommend you complete the base Dark Ages campaign before jumping into Revelations, as it has a higher base difficulty than the core campaign. It has six levels total – five plus the Purgatory hub – that you’ll do plenty of backtracking through. But it won’t be for nothing; these spaces are designed metroidvania-style, so you’ll be able to access new areas within them as you earn and upgrade abilities during the course of play.

I could tell just how much bigger and broader Revelations was going with its map design and structure. With a total of six new levels, as well as an enormous hub world that also acts as its own level, Revelations isn't just looking to tread old ground.

DayOne

The Chain Spear has multiple movement abilities to help you soar across the arena, with these used during exploration as well. As you complete the Base Game, the progression in the End Game sees you completing tasks in the world like Slayer Trials, Puzzles, Classic Levels, and more.

Well, there you go, folks. Plenty of excitement and anticipation in the air ahead of its scheduled July 7th release date.

DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations is the first major paid DLC and will be playable on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. You'll either be able to pick it up separately, or play it as part of the Premium Upgrade and Premium Edition versions of the base game. Look out for it next Tuesday!
