New Xbox boss Asha Sharma certainly had a lot to say in her statement regarding the Xbox layoffs and studio departures yesterday, and one particular line from the conclusion has been generating a lot of discussion ever since.
While insisting that the changes being made at Xbox are "about a bigger future, not a smaller one", Sharma revealed her ambitious goal of reaching "more than a billion people each day" with the brand.
She says she knows that Xbox can achieve the goal, and that Xbox will return to growth in 2027.
"These changes are about a bigger future for XBOX, not a smaller one. The next decade of gaming will be larger, more global, and more creative than anything we’ve seen before. This year, we’ll invest as much in XBOX as we ever have, but we’ll invest with greater focus, greater discipline, and greater clarity, all in service of making XBOX where the world plays and creates.
I want XBOX to be one of the few companies that entertains more than a billion people each day and gives everyone the opportunity to create and connect. I know we can achieve this goal. XBOX has many of the most beloved franchises in entertainment history, talented studios around the world, and we will return to growth in 2027."
Back in June, Asha Sharma and Matt Booty outlined five "realities" of the Xbox business that they were going to address, and mentioned that "over 1 billion players choose to play XBOX and our games each year, for a total of 72 billion hours across Console, PC, Mobile, and Streaming (excluding much of China and a few other properties)."
The new Xbox CEO clearly believes that Xbox can go further — not just in terms of console, but everything that Xbox attaches its name to including PC, mobile, streaming, TV, movies and whatever else — and makes a point in her statement that Xbox "will not" mistake longevity for inevitability like many other companies have done in the past.
Will she succeed? That's the big question, and we'll have to wait and see how it all pans out. In any case, the future of Xbox looks set to be an eventful one, most likely with many twists and turns over the next few months and years.
