Their shareholders sure seem to agree. Selling games on multiple consoles will absolutely make you more money. If Sony starts putting games on Xbox, then I do agree that it will probably not harm Xbox sales but they have no incentive to do that now.
@cragis0001 yes, but what about the handhelds during those generations? Nintendo consoles and handhelds typically sold in the 100M unit range when combined.
@Kaloudz the majority of average consumers hear the prevailing narrative that gamers repeat if they only somewhat follow gaming. Right now, that narrative is "Xbox has no games!" And I promise you, that matters. Sure, Game Pass is really good and I'm sure MS makes money from it. That matters, but not as much as many people here would have you believe.
But to try and say that console sales aren't affected by not having exclusives is, with current market conditions, not accurate. That's all I'm saying. Not that conditions can't change (that would be a stupid thing to say). To say that the strategy MS currently employs doesn't sell consoles isn't wild or untrue. I have no problem with it, but anyone saying they're moving consoles with this strategy (again with the current market conditions) is kidding themselves.
A lot of people misunderstand the point of saying "exclusives sell consoles." It isn't that people derive less enjoyment out of a video game because it's not exclusive to the console they bought that's the central point. It's that now ppl have a choice between one console that has a set of games they can't buy elsewhere while also having what used to be the other console's exclusive set of games.
Put another way, someone can buy God of War, Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank, Sea of Thieves AND Forza on PS5. I can't buy most of those games on Xbox Series X. And, oh by the way, both consoles have virtually the same level of third-party support so their libraries are already very similar to begin with. Which do you think a new buyer would choose if presented with those options for a console library?
I can believe it'll become a cult classic. Much in the same way New Vegas is a lot of ppl's favorite Fallout game, I can see people really swearing by this one.
Nice to hear for frame rate sensitive people, but I'm still on the fence with the Xbox version of this game. No, other consoles haven't been confirmed but with MS's recent track record it's likely going multiplat.
@Isolte right, I don't really think either will unless they feel they have to. Tbh, MS probably initially felt they had to, not just because they are a software company first and that is their general business model, but for legal reasons.
@donv2135 yes it does. If a company can't sell enough consoles to justify the ROI, they stop selling them. MS is a business, consoles are not a hobby for them.
Glad they got that out of the way, but it's pretty cool to see he's back. NV was an awesome game and it'll be nice to see what else Obsidian has cooking.
I don't care if PS will get the next game in the series day and date or that the most recent one is coming to PS5, but MS clearly isn't interested in selling consoles if they do the former. More than one thing can be true, people.
@abe_hikura that's been my argument. That isn't console wars, it's just a fact-based observation. Xbox console sales are declining. That's been correlating with day and date releases on multiple platforms.
If third-parties jump on board for Switch 2, I'll win because MS putting Xbox games there plus that is going to make my exit from the Xbox ecosystem (thus making me a single console owner) very easy.
@donv2135 well, data suggests people DO select which console to buy based on at least perceived or actual exclusives. Sony sells plenty of PS5's and Nintendo sells a lot of Switch consoles, while MS has trouble selling Xbox. The former have actual and perceived exclusives. So I'm relying on what's happening now, not some nebulous theory that people who act like they're "unbiased" try to push. People decide which console to buy using a few factors, one of which is, "Which has the games I want that I can't buy anywhere else?" Denying that is just ignoring reality. People have finite time and money. Whatever makes their decision-making easier, they'll use as a metric.
I always felt for first-party releases, it's been generally a given that it's play anywhere (sans games that were developed pre-acquisition, like COD but I expect the next one to be play anywhere). Third-party games were the question mark.
Even with Nintendo consoles as my primary ones, I don't like this move. I'm so far invested in Xbox it still kind of doesn't make sense not to buy the next console. Or I could do what MS is trying to force me to do and game on PC in lieu of buying the next console. Decisions...

Re: Reporter Suggests Console Exclusives Will Soon Be 'Obsolete', Especially For Third-Party Devs
We'll see, but I'll believe it when Sony starts putting more games on Xbox. Which I don't see happening.
Edit: I added the word "more" because Sony already puts MLB The Show on Xbox.

I may hold off on Avowed for Xbox as it's entirely possible that Switch 2 gets a port.

@PsBoxSwitchOwner they're already doing that for home consoles. I guess they figure what's the difference if they have a handheld?
Not saying the decision makes any semblance of sense IF they make a handheld console that they actually want to sell, but that is probably the logic.
Re: Soapbox: I Hope Xbox Properly Supports Switch 2 When It Launches In 2025
