Former Xbox Studio Forced To Layoff 23 Employees To Ensure 'Survival Of Our Studio' 1

It's been just over three weeks since Psychonauts and Kiln developer Double Fine announced its independence from Xbox Game Studios, and the team has now been forced into letting go of 23 employees to avoid complete closure.

Studio Head Tim Schafer confirmed the cuts on social media last night:

"As a small, tightly-knit team, these actions are not taken lightly. Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action".

It's clear the decision to reduce the team was one of necessity, a forced action to ensure Double Studio keeps its doors open as it transitions into an independent company.

Schafer went on to say that "the people we are losing were all important" and "they will be missed". If you've watched Double Fine's documentary series on YouTube, you'll understand the studio's culture is something pretty special. It's a team that has built its reputation on fun, weird, and zany games. I've personally considered them one of the good guys of game development for quite some time. That makes this news all the more horrid.

Double Fine was one of five Xbox Game Studios to enter into negotiations with Microsoft as part of the big Xbox reset. A company-wide restructuring that resulted in 1,600 job cuts earlier this month, and another 1,600 to follow before the end of the fiscal year. Transitioning from an Xbox-produced studio to an independent developer was always going to come with compromises, and it's possible Microsoft simply didn't want to be directly responsible for the additional redundancies at Double Fine
