Great news for Metro fans today! It's been announced that both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux are getting free Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S upgrades later this month on October 29th.

The team says this isn't a "remaster" or "remake", but both games nevertheless benefit from a suite of improvements including support for 4K textures, improved animation fidelity, higher quality audio, richer environmental detail, TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing support (on Series X), and so much more.

In fact, here's a quote summarising some of the main upgrades you can expect:

"The METRO Redux Next-Gen Update adds native support for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S, alongside platform-specific enhancements such as PSSR support on PlayStation 5 Pro, TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing support on Xbox Series X, and Spatial Audio support on Xbox platforms. Players on console can experience true 4K at 60FPS and upscaled 4K at 120FPS (with the right monitor or TV hardware), higher quality lighting, shadows and particle effects.

Plus, we are supporting Adaptive Triggers for DualSense controllers and Impulse Triggers on Xbox controllers. Players will also benefit from hardware tessellation and displacement at runtime on consoles, Power Optimized Mode on Xbox and Power Saver Mode support for PlayStation. With Xbox Handheld and Xbox Play Anywhere support, the journey through the Metro can continue wherever you choose."

Deep Silver says that the upgrade is free "for all existing owners of METRO 2033 Redux and METRO Last Light Redux on Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S", and we're assuming that means both digital and physical copies of them, although there's been no clarification about this at the time of writing.

Anyway, this is very cool! More details will apparently be revealed closer to launch, including "platform-specific features", so we'll circle back around at the end of the month with more information.

Don't forget about Metro 2039 as well, which is the new entry in the series that's launching in February of next year. Check out these new Redux versions, get yourself in the mood, and prepare for Metro 2039 in a few months' time!

"For new players, it’s time to join the 50 million players who fell in love with our acclaimed METRO storytelling and prepare yourself for what’s in store for METRO 2039 come February 4th."
