Nobody bought a PS5 thinking they were going to be playing Starfield on it. Nobody was mislead here. The acquisition was done a couple months before the PS5 was even on sale. So he has nothing to apologise for. It gives the impression that he in some way regrets the acquisition, which is not a good look for Bethesda or Microsoft.
Hmm. I think I'd rather have something like 1440p60 than see it maintain 4k at the expense of other graphical features or detail. I guess this suggests the game is CPU limited rather than GPU.
@OliverOwen It's a bit strange I agree. The previous update had the game running at 1440p60 on Series X anyway, so now they've kept it the same but with upgraded assets and higher res textures. It's probably just down to it not being native to the Series X and so still handicapped in some way.
@Grumblevolcano It does seem suspicious doesn't it? I think you'd have to be a bit foolish to buy something like Doom 2016 before Sunday happens, when it will probably be added to Gamepass. And yes, I'm a fool because I've just bought it! Less than £5 for it was too difficult to say no to!
For a 6 year old game with no next gen or even One X update, the 'discounted' price of £23.74 for all content seems about right. But £95 full price?! Not quite sure what they're thinking.
@Grumblevolcano Agreed, though I hope more publishers will get on board. Square Enix for the Tomb Raider trilogy and Deus Ex, and Warner Bros for Shadow of Mordor and Batman would be great.
I had some fun with it and couldn't put it down for a number of hours, but then realised that mostly my enjoyment came from the relief of finally beating a particular boss or difficult platforming section. The actual process of playing it was mostly filled with frustration and anger (not helped by the respawn points sometimes being miles away from where you died). I don't mind difficulty but having to replay the same section 8-9 times is not for me.
@The_New_Butler Good point about the PS consoles. Maybe Capcom are anticipating VRR being added in the near future? Pretty sure Arkham Knight also runs at 45fps and that was pre VRR days, so clearly some developers think it's worthwhile doing despite the judder.
@Murray Looks like the range goes from down near 20hz up to 120hz on most TVs, so 45 FPS in theory should work fine.
@The_New_Butler I imagine this is in response the availability of TVs that support VRR. 45fps on a VRR TV would presumably look noticeably better than 30fps. For everyone else who doesn't have a brand new TV though it will look a bit odd to be sure.
It will be fascinating to see if there are any visual or performance differences between PS5 and Xbox here. I can't imagine a situation where the Xbox version is allowed to run better, and I almost wonder whether they will make sure that the PS5 version is definitive in some way.
I'm not really across this game - is there a reason it has so much hype? It looks charming yes and mention of Zelda obviously gets people interested, but there are lots of indie adventure style games that kind of fly under the radar, why is this one any different? Not saying it won't be great, just wondering if I've missed something that explains the level of hype it has.
As a mostly solo gamer I'm interested to hear what anyone's thoughts are on Outriders as a story-driven single player experience. Are there levels that you complete and move on or is it more open world? Don't really want a grindy, repetitive, time-sink style game, but do like progressing through a good campaign.
@LtSarge Tempted to try this before it goes, do you remember if it runs at 30fps or 60fps? Will be playing on Series X though using the One X enhanced code. Currently loving Prey so am up for some more space based adventures!
I just want Square Enix to get on board with FPS boost. Deus Ex Mankind Divided and the Tomb Raider trilogy (in quality mode) would benefit immensely from this.
@abe_hikura I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure they have their reasons but from the outside looking in I'm not sure what 10 billion dollars is actually getting them here. Maybe this is less an Xbox oriented acquisition and more MS thinking that they want to turn it into a competitor to WhatsApp.
Great to see so many people are playing Prey! I'm one of the many who tried playing it before the FPS boost and just couldn't get on with it, but now it's like a whole new game.
If this is the extent of what they're doing with these games, it is a massive wasted opportunity. Here's hoping they will either announce an upcoming patch to allow 60fps at high quality settings, or that FPS boost will be applied to them.
@Krzzystuff I agree, I was also surprised when I saw that the Forza DLC wasn't included. I think it may have something to do with Playground Games not actually being a 1st party studio when it was being developed? Same with Obsidian and The Outer Worlds. Whereas Gears 5 and The Initiative were 1st party the whole time.
I would strongly expect that in the case of Doom Eternal's DLC it is only a matter of time until that gets added to GP though, along with Doom 2016.
@abe_hikura I'm guessing it would because the game isn't optimised for Series X, so it's not able to fully utilise the extra power. I'm sure if the devs got involved with an actual next gen update they could get it to 60fps without too much trouble.
Hmm. At this point every time Crysis is released for a new platform it just feels like it's another opportunity to see this badly optimised game run badly, regardless of what hardware you put in front of it. The whole "but can it run Crysis" thing is almost always answered with a no, at least not properly, thanks to how that game has been engineered. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong!
"Nearly" 60fps? That's weird. An unstable 60 is in some ways less desirable than a stable 30. Surprised they would bother if they couldn't maintain 60 on a particular title. I was really hoping for Dishonored 2 but hopefully that will be added later.
Sure this is unlikely, but has anyone tried Fallout 4 today to see if it now has FPS boost? I know they haven't said it would yet but it seems strange to me that they would wait and add it at a later date.
We're due for some more FPS boost games as well, so I'm really hoping that they will not only announce that Bethesda games are coming to Gamepass, but also that at least a few will be upped to 60fps. Dishonored 2 would be transformed.
I thought the initial gameplay reveal looked pretty awesome on the whole, apart from a couple of small issues like the pop-in mist/cloud. The backlash against it was way OTT. These shots look great as well, can't wait!
Is it not heavily assumed that Respawn are currently hard at work on Fallen Order 2? Do they have multiple teams? Would love a Titanfall 3, though it's only the campaign I'd be interested in.
Titanfall 2's campaign provided some of the finest few hours of condensed fun I've had in gaming for some time.
@everynowandben I'm being overly harsh on Control I know - I have genuinely really enjoyed playing it and I'm looking forward to going back to it now that the crashing issue is being patched (I stopped for a while as it was really quite frequent). I think with the combat it's probably just a taste thing. I quite like the style of walking into an area with enemies and then being able to take a second to think about how to tackle them, maybe one at a time or trying to do it without alerting too many others etc. Control on the other hand is almost a bit like Doom Eternal where you enter an area and then suddenly a dozen enemies spawn on top of you, and then it's a frantic combination of shooting and moving until they're all gone. It's not a fault of the game, just a style that I favour slightly less.
@StonyKL I have gotten further into the game than you but I know what you mean. I also feel the game suffers from being somewhat repetitive, in particular the fighting and general exploration. I think the fact that the whole game so far has been set inside grey concrete rooms and corridors doesn't help - I would definitely prefer a bit more environmental variation. I do think it's fantastically atmospheric, beautiful, and well written however. I just don't think the actual gameplay is quite up there with the best.
Just completed it using back compat on Series X, was fantastic. Played in performance mode which ran at 60fps and what I thought was 1080p... so this update barely improves upon that. Odd.
