A consistent UI across generations is something people actually appreciate. The clean UI of the psp, ps3, ps4 and ps5 are familiar and tinged with nostalgia. They didn't change mid generation and they all evoke a Playstation aesthetic.

As a soft-reboot that is trying to figure out what people loved and do that again, I can't get excited for this one. Maybe Staten made big narrative changes but so far it doesn't seem like the franchise has an authoritative original vision. Force Awakens vibes.

The Final Fantasy name used to evoke a rich, high quality, original experience with characters to gravitate towards and a world to get lost in. The video-game equivalent to a classic novel read by a campfire. Nowadays it just evokes traaaaash.

Ownership of games and preservation of games that are no longer supported by modern hardware are two different topics.

Preservation in Phil’s context is ‘the ability to play old games’.

Get back to me when Xbox is ‘releasing’ more narrative driven games than ever. Smh

Ok I'll be that guy. It's bad because there is no unified visual brand for this generation of Xbox which is evident from the cover.
Series X is written on the box twice. Once in the white tab and again as a logo on the right. The text in the tab is.. is that Ariel?
For comparison, the PS5 box has the name of the console and it's logo both in the unified style that is seen on anything PS5 related.
Why are the xbox logo, the console logo and the written name of the console given three seperate styles?

It was a great show for Game Pass owners. But for AAA-Exclusives it was the same old story. Halo and Forza out this year, anything new is nowhere to be seen.

Games should be announced within 2 years of release. Make it LAW.

We might get some more details at E3. Hellblade, Avowed and Perfect dark sounds like a pretty great 2022 lineup to me. Wishful thinking maybe.

@JetmanUK I kinda love it for the reasons you don't. It reminds of Ico, but more generally. I think the slightly off-walking style is charming.
Compare this one to something like Alpha Protocol's crouching animation - which is hilarious.

None of those updates will fix the mission design, barren world or lack of a good story. No matter what they do this game won’t be what anyone hoped.

Sounds like a great mix of Halo CE and Halo 3 to me. Hopefully these are legit.

My Xbox is the 'Halo and other classic games' machine with the occassional third-party release.

I think Sony worked out an exclusivity deal for this first part. Perhaps the sequel will be multiplatform.

@GateCrasherUK I was referring more generally to the clear disparity between Xbox and PlayStation in fostering studios and exclusive games.

@GateCrasherUK Playstation fans enjoy Playstation exclusives for what they are. That was the reasoning for the Nintendo comparison. Your or my own personal view on those exclusives is irrelevant. The other platforms are consistently getting the exclusives the platform holders expect and enjoy.

@Dezzy Proof of the pudding is in the eating. They have a track record of poor fostering of studios and releasing disappointing exclusives. Big money spent means naught when the games aren’t on the system and could still be crap when they are.

Xbox has been pretty bad with exclusives for a long time. They show no sign of correcting that course, now releasing consoles without flagship titles. Playstation fans are now getting the Nintendo treatment, able to bank on high quality games of a certain type with few disappointments. No idea what’s going on behind the scenes but it doesn’t seem good.

The first is still my favourite. Those Mako sections look really cool. The OG still looks pretty great on an S/X console.

@Zochmenos 1. The marketing of that scene, in the same way an annoying ad-campaign might put one off. 2. Potential gameplay built for the e-sports scene like Halo 5’s arena modes, call-outs and weapon waypoints.

Long time Halo fan. No interest in e-sports Halo at all. Actively puts me off the game.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is my favourite Rare game.

No. Get a Series S. It’s a substantial upgrade over the One S. It’s sleek, small and quiet.

The only con is the disc drive:
Some BackCompat games are not available digitally.
Your existing physical library is not playable.

But I think waiting for a Series X price drop is a better remedy to these issues than settling with soon to be decade old hardware.

It’s probably easier to balance weapons withot dual wield. I think that’s why Bungie scrapped it after 2 games.

I have a Series S now so although I have them on disc I might grab Splinter Cell and Chaos theory.

It looks much better. Those Banshees look like MegaBlox sets, but better overall.
The Forerunner structures look perfect to me. Let’s hope the writing and enemies have a similar overhaul!

Warzone, Division 2, MCC...... My Series S is full.

Such a great month. I’d like to see some decent OG and 360 titles again. For more modern games, a decent third person adventure.

This has ‘cup of tea and Digital Foundry session’ written all over it.

A really solid month this time. Loving Lost Planet 2 which is a nice surprise. It holds up really well.

Crash Team Racing was really great but have to go with N Sane Trilogy. Crash 4 may play better but I really prefer the trilogy’s visual design.

More OG/360 back compat games or nee updates for existing ones would be cool.

Please don’t promote this man. Just his games.

I am so pumped for this. Loved R-Types/Dimensions. So many great shmups on Xbox but nothing hits quite like R-Type.

I looked through all of them on the dashboard and ended buying Virtua Fighter 2 at its full price of £3.49.

Prediction:
2021 - Halo Infinite
2022 - Hellblade 2
2023 - Everwild, Avowed
2024 - Perfect Dark, Fable
