Re: Talking Point: Has Your Gaming Slowed Down As You've Got Older?

Ryu_Niiyama

I feel like it varies for me. While I game for fun, I sorta also game to "self medicate" when I am depressed or stressed. When I was younger I was working a lot and managing stress poorly, so I would binge game more. I work just as much now and juggle even more responsibilities, but my ability to manage stress has improved so I game as a hobby now which means it is somewhat more scheduled (unless tired I usually play about 30minutes to an hour a day on weekdays and 2-4 on Saturday). I don't like to binge game anymore because I have other things and hobbies to do (I play several musical instruments and gotta get in that daily practice), plus grad school and work are ramping up, so my focus is on those things. I'm also trying to get my business off the ground so yeah gaming is less of the instant go to.

I probably played more as a young child as it was my primary hobby outside of reading and there were very few kids in my neighborhood (and no other girls my age which super sucked) but I would say if I average it out I have played about the same rate for the past 20 years. Just it is more evenly spread now instead of crazy binges. My reflexes are still good for fighting games and that's my only concern...well that and going blind but that is gonna happen so it is what it is.

Re: Talking Point: Are You Still Interested In Beyond Good & Evil 2 From Ubisoft?

Ryu_Niiyama

Personally it looks so far from BG&E that I don’t see the point. This feels like one of those games with the name but not the soul of its namesake. I will need amazing reviews and to see extensive gameplay in order to buy this game. I also think the full prequel route is a bad idea unless that is the first half of the game. The original ended on a cliffhanger. Get back to that.

Re: Preview: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is A Confident Return for BioWare

@GhanaViking that actually really sucks. I actually enjoyed the set sexualities in the earlier games. Inquisition especially, even if it wasn’t in my favor. It’s erasure and terribly reductive to make everyone Bi. That isn’t how sexuality works in real life. But homosexuals tend to get shouted down when we point this out.

Re: Bethesda Unveils Official Trailer For Starfield's Shattered Space DLC

Ryu_Niiyama

Oh snap creation kit dropped? Welp time to wait on a PC bundle with shattered space. Shattered space looks crazy and may answer a few questions I have. (I think we may get closer to who the Creators are and why tf the Varuun are crazy. I feel like they found a broken armillary). Looks really good. I just hope we can still trust Andreja but I will boot her out an airlock if required.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Looks Gorgeous In Next-Gen Extended Gameplay

@xboxjapanfan Ubisoft puts a disclaimer in every AC game. They essentially take tours of the cities they will use and consult historians to build a foundation but they have always been honest that they have to take liberties as many landmarks no longer exist or have been eroded and they have to alter the landscape to accommodate the gameplay. (AC 3 dev videos go into how they had to structure Colonial America’s cities to make traversal work. )

Even games like Rise of Ronin or Ghost of Tsushima take liberties. Everyone knows this is a video game not a time machine. This is a game series where a progenitor species guided the evolution of humans and were worshipped as gods as an explanation for all the religions in the world.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Looks Gorgeous In Next-Gen Extended Gameplay

Ryu_Niiyama

I am so ready for this game. Pretty much my dream AC (now that the meta plotline is pretty much in shambles. That being said this is my last one. ) Going out with a bang though!

Love how Yasuke is using a club. He was known for his size and strength in comparison to the Japanese (and dutch and Portuguese) he encountered in Japan. The contrast in playstyles looks really fun.

I wonder what the Japanese Isu will look like. If we see any.

Re: Phil Spencer On Recent Studio Closures: It's About Running A 'Sustainable Business'

Ryu_Niiyama

This is the nature of business. Xbox is not turning amazing profits. It isn’t tanking but for the money being spent it isn’t garnering a great ROI. A business has to remain as fiscally agile as possible. And an employee has to do the same. Everyone is expendable but you can protect yourself by networking, keeping your resume and skills sharp and being fiscally responsible. I wish all the former employees the best but pitchforks and internet torches does nothing.

Most of the internet outrage is virtue signaling anyway. When a studio doesn’t make games they like most folks aren’t this “outraged”. It’s only when they feel their personal entertainment is impacted that it becomes a tragedy. Which is no different than shareholders but way less logic/fiscally driven.

Re: Mad Max Dev Takes Offense At 'Nonsense' Criticism Of The 2015 Video Game

Ryu_Niiyama

I love DLC but not a fan of devs acting like it is a crutch. Rather than they left out good DLC what about what actually went into the game? I understand there was executive meddling but if they had all this great content that was left out? Why was it left out? If they were coming up with content during development then imo it should have gone into the game.

Re: Review: Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 (Xbox): An Incredible Spectacle That Lacks An Essential Hook

Ryu_Niiyama

I’m more concerned about length. I don’t need to torture characters to resonate with them and I feel that is a narrative crutch anyway. It sounds like the narrative is trying to push the main character forward (with stumbles and setbacks like a normal person) rather than lathering her pain. So I suspect I won’t have as much of an issue with the story. Haven’t played the first one yet though as it is in my back log but perhaps I will bump it up a bit.

Re: Talking Point: What Convinced You To Pick Xbox In The First Place?

Ryu_Niiyama

I started with the 360.

I was a mostly Nintendo gamer as the last time my parents could afford two systems was the genesis and snes. I also started to notice that videogame marketing was becoming more geared towards teenage boys and more violent. I love fighting games as the arcade is what got me hooked on gaming but the hypersexual and violence focus of games like mortal kombat, Tomb Raider and FF7 drove me squarely into the Nintendo and PC (Age of Mythology and the sims 2 were my jams and I still enjoy them now) camp. I was aware of systems like xbox and PlayStation but the games that made them popular weren’t interesting to me and to make matters worse I no longer fit in with the gamers at school because they were mostly boys that were sexualizing girls and women in a way that made me deeply uncomfortable (and afraid to be honest). Especially after puberty hit. So gaming became very isolating for me. I still find most marketing strategies for xbox and PS to be unappealing.

I didn’t branch out until I was in undergrad. I got a job at GameStop and had to play/keep up with games I had no interest in to do my job. But at least the people I worked with were both more mature (or at least performative to keep their jobs) and I found other teenage girls my age to game with. My boss was super cool but I am not gonna lie that part of my decision was influenced because I had a crush on his wife. He mentioned oblivion to me and my pc wouldn’t be able to run it so he suggested a 360. I couldn’t afford one but he loaned me one from the store after mentioning his wife loved the game (I had never played a western RPG before and was wary) so I agreed to try. That game got me interested in Bethesda, but my plan was to upgrade my PC. The tipping point was Virtua Fighter 5 Online. I LOVE VF but could only play in the arcade so I hadn’t played since VF2. Finding out that was the best version of the game (at the time) prompted me to buy a used 360, VF5O, Oblivion CE and a hori arcade stick. I’ll tell anyone the 360 is the worst gaming purchase I ever made as I am on my 8th, but it did prompt me to dig back into gaming so much so that I bought or traded for a PS2, PS1, xbox, dreamcast and sega saturn that same year. I started buying every major console after that. I will admit what kept me with xbox is the controller. I loathe the dualshock/sense so while I buy sony systems for the exclusives I try to buy multiplats on xbox if they aren’t on Nintendo.

I’m at a crossroads where I’m feeling disappointed in gaming again though so my plan is next gen to go back to Nintendo and PC. But it has been an interesting experience nonetheless.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Can Be Played Offline, Confirms Ubisoft

Ryu_Niiyama

@NarutosBiggestFan Not everyone has great or constant internet. Some have quota/caps. This also doesn’t bode well for future use of the game. I have physical games I paid for on PC that are paperweights because the DRM server or service is dead. This is a flat dealbreaker for many.

So to answer your question many of us care because we are either impacted directly, know someone who is or understand that others will be impacted. Online requirements for single player games defeat the purpose of a physical game and can cost a publisher sales.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Can Be Played Offline, Confirms Ubisoft

Ryu_Niiyama

@PsBoxSwitchOwner I hadn’t thought about that but some preorders get early access (3 days for this game) so it might be to implement that gating system to prevent those who break street date from playing. Still not a fan though.

Not that it matters. I preordered the physical version from GameStop and they are always late lol.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Can Be Played Offline, Confirms Ubisoft

Ryu_Niiyama

I’m hoping it’s just an authorization check although it begs the question of what happens when the authorization service is shut down. There are PC games that can’t be installed/played due to this even if the person has the disc on hand. Fable 3 comes to mind. I hope they patch this out eventually.

That being said Ubisoft really needs to remember not everyone has great internet. Especially in the US.
