Talking Point: Which Has Been The Most Reliable Xbox Console For You?

The original Xbox One was my most reliable...I had an Xbox One X and the motherboard went bad with barely any dust on its fans.

Playing currently on my Series X, but hoping it won't die as quick.

All of them about from the best console for games they have ever made the xbox360.
Mine got the ring bug and had to be fixed.
All the others not one issue.

The Series X is the best piece of hardware this gen imo. Compact, looks good, silent and zero issues for me. No denying it’s a well built machine.

All have been good except 360 which of course had the red ring of death.
Original Xbox fine, Xbox One S & X again no issues.
Currently have a Series X and it runs perfectly.

I got my 360 during the height of the RROD epidemic and never had a single issue with it, ironically enough.

I got the red ring of death on one of my 360’s back in the day, but they fixed that free of charge and the second one that I bought never had that issue. So I can’t really complain about the 360 to be fair. Series S so far had had no issues at all.

All of them since the original Xbox One have been quiet and reliable, but I didn't have the Xbox 360 that, I assume, is the least reliable, especially the early model. On the other hand, my PS4 sounds like a jet engine which is funny because it's the jet black edition. It also ejects discs randomly and that is worse than you can imagine because it means that the console closed games immediately, wasting hours of Kingdom Hearts playthroughs. It also outputs a weird random video blackout that lasts half a second.

Nintendo is the brand that I have bought (or been given) the most and I had issues with the Wii that output green pixels but was replaced and the first Nintendo 3DS that also had a weird colours GPU issue, but was also replaced for free. The SNES, N64, GC, New 3DS and Wii U still work fine. My Switch v.2 is also fine, but I bought it last year (replacing the Lite) and haven't used it much.

my xbox one x is really reliable. only problems i have are with the games themselves which the xbox has no control over.

The only issues I have had with an xbox console is the disc laser burning out on an OG xbox in 2021. It was picked up used too so who knows how the previous owner(s) used it.

My early edition 360 was stolen in college. I like to believe the thief got the red ring immediately after that.

All xbox consoles that I am the original owner still work great. I have had worse luck with playstation and Nintendo. Burned through a couple ps2's back in the day, a ps3 died after a power surge. My launch version of Nintendo Switch has a faulty dock that requires a work around to use each time, and those joy cons are junk.

Never had a problem with any of them, not even my 360. Still have all of them to this day and all are 100% functional

@Banjo- I've had more issues with the DS line than any other piece of hardware. The hinge on my DS Lite broke after a few years. My OG 3DS scratched its own top screen thanks to the raised borders on the bottom. My nephew has has a shoulder button just stop working entirely on his 2DS. And one of my New 3DS units just stopped working entirely.

I also had to replace a Wii U GamePad, but that wasn't really the console's fault. A kid spilled water on it. I guess I just resent not being able to play my Wii U without the stupid tablet controller, even though I pretty much only used my Pro Controller after a while.

With Switch, the main unit is solid as hell, but those joycons keep having issues, dude. Only other controllers I've had any drift issues with were with 20 year old PS2 controllers.

With exception of the 360 they have all been really well built and reliable.

Strange how the 360 was such a big problem, but it smoked the PS3 as far as popularity during that generation. Everyone I knew had a 360. No one I knew picked up a PS3. Of course I had one because I loved gaming from every console.

Yep. That poll is exactly how thought it would be and exactly how my experience so far is too.

The only one iv had a problem with was a 360. The drive stopped ejecting. Then stopped completely.

@Ralizah My joy-cons are fine because I play Switch docked except for one vacation I brought it with me, but it's outrageous how cheaply made and expensive they are. For playing Switch I use a Brook adapter and an Xbox controller and mapped the buttons accordingly.

@Banjo- I have Split Pads I can use for undocked, but I like motion aiming in games like Splatoon and BotW, so they're not fully satisfying for me. Motion is good on the Pro Controller, but I'm playing undocked on my OLED model 90% of the time. Just glad my Lite has been resistant to these drifting issues.

Hopefully whatever the Switch 2 ships with is more robust.

I've had way more problems with my Series X than my later model 360 in a fraction of the time. Never imagined I'd have to factory reset a console so the Home Menu can work, and my controller started drifting with less play than my first set of Joycons.

Ive been pretty lucky. Only xbox consoles to ever fail me were early model 360s(one in japan and one in the us) and both were dead on arrival, so i just swapped them out. Got multiple years out of each with no issues.

Xbox and Nintendo have always been rock solid for me. PlayStations 1-3 were utter trash for me though. 4-5 have been solid. I went through 9 ps1-3s in a period of 9 years, was very frustrating. Didn’t buy a 4 until the spidy version of the pro released as a result.

The console is good but the controller god the controllers

So my answer is completely cheating, but:
-Least reliable: Original Xbox, ONLY because my hard drive gave out and I had to do the good old Raspberry Pi EEPROM stuff to get another one in there, as I did not have my Xbox modded before the hard drive failure. Again this is cheating, as it very obviously was going to do that eventually, as my specific motherboard config is like 20 years old now.
-"Middle" reliable: Xbox One X, as I had to reapply thermal paste to it (apparently bad thermal paste is a common issue on these bad boys). At least before I did that, lighter games were still completely playable.
-Most reliable: Xbox 360 S. I have not had a single issue with it at all. That's impressive, as recently I have been super cursed and virtually all of the consoles I own (which is more than a few) have run into issues all around the same time somehow, but this beast has caused me no trouble at all!

Had about 7 different 360 consoles 3 had red ring death the rest the disc drive broke only had one xbone but eventually the disc drive broke have me series s since launch it's going grand probably because no disc drive haha might get a series x eventually but not properly sold on one yet ha

I had two RRoD on my 360. Microsoft's great response and easy repair system was hugely influence in my decision to keep sticking with them.

My series x is holding up just fine but probably because I never play the thing 😛

I have never had a single hardware problem with an Xbox, but then I can only think of one issue with any console I have owned and Sony very quickly swapped out that PS2.

The thing with Xbox I do struggle with is how finicky the OS software can be, it hasn't been right since they dropped the 360 blades

If I could have played all my 360 games on PC i would have thrown it in the trash. Same with the xbone. Both are terribly made. Series x is holding up for now but I don’t trust it honestly. OG Xbox isn’t played much but it seems to be in better shape.

My Original Xbox never died in the 6 years I had it, I was also one of the few lucky ones who got a launch day Xbox 360 that lasted 6 years before I replaced it with a 360 slim. Xbox One day one edition lasted from launch day until last year when the HDMI went out. That 500GB launch model lasted a true decade with ZERO issues. I've had my Xbox Series S for 2 years now with no issues and I take that console with me when I'm out of town. I've had my Xbox Series X almost 6 months now & it's probably the sleekest best designed console I've ever owned. My PS5 on the other hand, I've had almost 3 years now and it's HOT AF all the damn time lol, never had an issue but it definitely runs hotter than the Xbox Series X. Long Live Xbox ✌️

Series X and Xbox One X, easily. My Xbox One had a hard drive failure very late (I'm pretty sure I owned the Series X for a while when it happened). Every other disc-based console failed on multiple times; PS1, PS2, PS3, OG Xbox, and Xbox 360.

I have a mid Gen Halo model Xbox 360 that is a daily driver on my main TV. It's been running very well since purchase in 2008. It has a slight snag on the disc drive opening, a little pop on the top fixes that. And with the exterior power supply it can get a little loud. But this baby has been with me thru thick and thin. Many of my favorite game memories came thanks to it.

My launch original Xbox was DOA, so that was fun, but my 360, woof. My Xbox One S and Series X have been incredibly reliable devices thus far. I have a couple original Xboxes around still nowadays that still work well though.

The only Xbox model that has given me any trouble whatsoever is my early model Xbox 360 which RRODed for me after about 6-7 years of heavy use.

After that I’ve had 360 Slim, OG One, One X and now a Series X and they have all worked perfectly 🙂

The OG Xbox was the most reliable for me, never had a single hardware issue with mine for the longest time until recently when I assume that a capacitor must've died and leaked all over the motherboard as it won't even turn on anymore.

The original Xbox felt like a very robust piece of hardware. Never had issues with it.

Did have problems with the Xbox 360 (the infamous lens-scratching-discs issue).

The Xbox Series is a return to form. It's a very well-designed/engineered piece of hardware.

For me I had to go with Xbox One as most reliable and Xbox 360 (later version) as least reliable. My day one Xbox 360 lasted through almost the entire generation, and I only traded it to get the Kinect. While I don’t regret that decision, I noticed some games like Call of Duty ran better on the original. Upgrading for Kinect was totally worth it… Dance Central, Nike+ Kinect Fitness, and Sonic Riders were amazing experiences. Stuck with Nike+ for a good year before having to box up the Kinect due to space limitations in my new place.

I don't remember having any issues while playing a game with the series x. Other than that controller issue I've had, where it double presses buttons.

both my OG Xbox's had the disc drive jam because of the rubber band and seems to be a common issue with them.

Went though 12 Xbox 360's with hardware issues before finally getting the 360 S which is still working

The One S has been solid so far, but I've only had about 5 years or so.

I got a bunch of OGs, on the other hand, and 3 or 4 of them have problems with the DVD drive (one is even a Samsung, i.e., the good kind... go figure).

You know what system is tied with the OG Xbox for problems, in my experience? The GameCube. Yes, the same console that's proven to survive a 15-foot drop onto concrete. I had to return mine twice within the warranty period, as the first one was prone to random crashes, and the second developed disc read errors in under a year. The third one is fine... but I later got a spare console, and it had a dead power supply!

PS: In case it needs to be said, I don't drop my consoles onto concrete! I let others do it. For science.

I’m sure the RROD taught them many lessons and is a situation they don’t want to repeat.

I had a few rrod back in the day, but the series x has been glitch free and I hope it stays that way. 😊

They've all been pretty reliable for me apart from my early Xbox 360 which did get the red ring of death on it.

The only Xbox I ever had an issue with was the early models of the 360, though I never personally got the red ring of death, I did encounter other issues such as it only displaying black and white

The original Xbox never had an issue with it still have it somewhere not had many issues with Series S either. But 360 i had 2 rrod and one Xbox one that had to be replaced after developing a fault after a year or so.

Well it's my Series X by default as it is still working. My OG Xbox stopped working as it would overheat after extended play and cause graphical glitches. I then went through three 360's and by the time the third one died I didn't go back to an Xbox console until this generation as I had nothing but bad experiences with the hardware and the lack of games last generation kind of put me off even considering it for a long time.

It was horrible to hear my friends go through the early 360s while I was on the PS3. Microsoft at the time denied the issue since it happened right around the end of the warranty. But thankfully, they were gracious to offer replacements after enough pushback. The later editions of the 360 resolved that RROD issue, so I got the newer black version eventually with my One S (for the Kinect games), so had no issues with that.

Would say my Xbox One S and Series X have been reliable in terms of reputation, there was nothing to fear.

had some dvd drive issues with my og xbox, obviously had some red ring issues on 360, but i've had zero hardware problems with xbox one and xbox series consoles

My series s. As it's the only one I've ever had... 😂 Mostly had Nintendo's and PlayStation's and I still have every ps and still in working order. My PS2 original fat needed some tlc on the optical laser caddy I fixed that myself. Probably due to overuse! I did sell on my PS3 fat for a slim as it was starting to sound like a Vulcan bomber. Apparently it conked out 6 months later..... Not my problem tho. 😀

@Ralizah The hinge in my OG launch DS was destroyed from use and the touch functionality on my launch DS lite stoped working. Other than that the replacement consoles and the 3DS line are in perfect shape. My launch Switch though is one point before the trash can. I keep repairing the cons and they still drift, the charging stops working randomly the whole thing seems very cheap. That said my OG Game Boy still works with no issues.

On topic I have only a Series S and works perfectly, the UI is fast and the console is quite.

The X without doubt for me. I had SIX RRODs but I still persevered that gen because it was a great console.

My original 2007 Elite RROD'd after 18 months and I was able to get another 9 months out of a repair. My Elite JASPER chipset is still going, even after a ridiculous amount of Rock Band. So I vote Later 360

I have thankfully had no issues with my VCR X1 or Series X. I did buy a One X for a great deal locally but it wound up needing a new disc drive

@species8472 the OG Xbox has capacitors which can leak acid if not removed just something to be aware of

The 360 I had 10 RROD Xbox to their credit replaced every single one. Since the one I have had no issues to and I use mine a lot.

The current one (series x) has been faultless. I loved the 360 but it was a mess.

It's been a dry news week haha. weirdly enough the Series S has been the most reliable as both the Xbox One and 360 died on me.

My Series X and my old Xbox One S have been the most reliable Xbox consoles for me.
I guess my original Xbox comes in third place.

Xbox 360 was probably my least reliable console ever, my original 360(bought at the end of 2008) broke down at the start of 2011 and out of the two Slim variants I had, they all suffered from various issues between 2011 and the end of 2014 ranging from the disc tray randomly opening and refusing to close to refusing to start properly to issues where the controllers would suddenly stop working.

The Xbox 360 gen had really good games overall but in terms of the console itself(either iteration), it was pretty bad.

Xbox One S was my first M$ console and it ran somewhat janky, crashing here and there, also slow system software...
But I am total in love with my Series S.
Great hardware for such a small price. The size is great to take it easily with you. Never had a hard crash and its very silent, even in a dusty environment.

@belmont I've never heard of a Game Boy breaking down in any way. My GBC from when I was a kid still works like new. When the bombs drop, all that'll be left in the rubble of the world will be small animals and Game Boys.

Went through 3 OG 360 models
With the RROD, my friend went through 6. That machine was a disaster!

My series S is my first Xbox console and I don't know if it's faulty or it's a common issue, but my controllers constantly disconnect and none of the troubleshooting I do helps. Sometimes it will go days without issue and then it will suddenly start doing it again. It's infuriating >.<

So reliable? nope not for me. Had more luck with flippin' joycons.

I only had a 360 and didn't use it that much, then I got a series X that's been my main console for the last couple of years.

I haven't had any major problems with either, so not that bad. That said, I had a couple of issues with the series X controller (ish). One was that I bought one of those rechargeable battery packs and it died in a few weeks (wouldn't charge) Microsoft just refunded me, and I moved on to rechargeable AAA and never looked back. I used to think that having controllers using batteries was a bad thing, but now I think it's actually quite good to have the option.

The other thing is that occasionally when I press "A" it's registered as pressing twice. Which is a weird thing that comes and goes, so not quite sure if it is software, hardware or what. Not a major issue for now as it's not very common and it usually doesn't impact my gameplay.

Other than the Series S I currently have which has been great so far, I had a 360 which in the first 12 months did give me the red ring of death.
