Re: Xbox Founding Member 'Not Pleased' With State Of The Brand In 2025

Ryu_Niiyama

Eh. Gaming has changed over 25 years. Xbox doesn’t have enough exclusives to go at it alone nor does it have the market coverage to be the defacto 3rd party brand. So they are trying to figure out where they fit beyond the hardware faithful. MS is in the unique space of being in most homes via windows so they seem to be trying to pivot xbox to leverage that. Adapt or die. Not saying they will be successful but I commend them for trying.

Re: Opinion: It Feels Like Microsoft Is Planning A Huge Final Year Of Xbox Series X|S In 2026

Ryu_Niiyama

@TheSimulator I never said anything about indie games. Granted they are quite useful to a game library so I disagree either way. Production values of games have a range. Not just flagship or indie, which seems to be what you are implying. I was referring to the range of value. I didn’t mention gamepass either but I also disagree there. The majority of games I play on gamepass are indie or 3rd party. Perhaps you tagged me by mistake? Edit also no need to use expletives.

Re: Opinion: It Feels Like Microsoft Is Planning A Huge Final Year Of Xbox Series X|S In 2026

Ryu_Niiyama

I hope not. I don’t really feel the series X has reached its potential yet. Too many games straddled one and series s/series x, too many late Playstation ports. Not enough new games, especially not enough exclusives. They shouldn’t just make a new system just for the sake of making one/betting on consumer conditioning. Like it should feel like they can’t make the games they want on current HW. (Obviously R&D overlaps the last years of a console’s life.) But ok I will wait and see. For me at least, this has been my least active gen on xbox or PS. I am at the point that a Nintendo/PC combo will get me all the games I want to play. Especially with sony on PC (MS has been on PC so no shock there). I am a little sad about that.

I haven’t had time to research Microsoft’s finances lately, but I would love to see a push for them to get more exclusive content out. With the number of studios they have they should be able to put a pool of money towards some unique games over the next 2-4 years. (Won’t be AAA because not enough time but not everything has to be a flagship game).

I am still hoping for an Xbox OS though.

Re: Developer Reveals Surprisingly Critical Feedback After Launching On Xbox Game Pass

Ryu_Niiyama

That’s the normal tug of war of the free market. Consumers want product for the lowest price possible and Producers want to sell product for the highest price possible. The middle ground is what the market can bear. Trying to stop other devs from taking a lump sum is a fool’s errand. even if subscriptions crater, consumers are going to buy based on perceived value.

Less demos, delays, day 1 patches, canceled/stunted/abandoned support, higher prices, retreaded genres/stories/protagonists, lack of desired genres/stories/protagonists, all impact perceived value. Personally I use game pass as a rental service. If I like the game, I will go buy it (eventually), and games that don’t have demos or aren’t on gamepass are often forgotten. Devs I trust will often get a Day 1 purchase. We have more games than ever, which honestly means gamers can be way more discerning than before. I find that I am vetoing more games that I would have bought eagerly 10 years ago because I have too much to play to spend money on a game whose flaws or cons don’t outweigh the more enjoyable games in existence or my own library. I am at the point that I have so many games that I won’t finish them in my lifetime. So I no longer need to be a glutton for games that don’t entertain me or represent me.

If one of the myriad producers of games doesn’t make a market successful product, that is simply the free market (and perhaps lack of advertising) at work.

Re: Talking Point: Switch 2 Owners, Should Xbox Embrace Nintendo's New System?

Ryu_Niiyama

I would like to see more Bethesda games on the platform. Skyrim was fun on the go. Other than that I really just want to see xbox work out their parity issues because it feels (note I said feels) like them trying to get ps5 games ported slows ports anywhere else. At this point I am back to waiting a year to two for anything announced on ps5/series x to see if the switch family gets it. I simply don’t want to double dip anymore. As far as porting anything non Bethesda or call of duty i don’t really care.

Re: Xbox Building A Handheld 'Makes No Sense', Says Former Blizzard Boss

Ryu_Niiyama

I have mixed feelings. I think MS needs to figure out a solid xbox hardware strategy. I think a portable if powerful enough would fit their game everywhere approach and offer something that would appeal to many people. However I still think MS needs an xbox OS release instead of windows that runs xbox games. Give people access to their full digital library.

Re: Sony Has Approached Subscriptions 'Healthier' Than Xbox, Says Former PlayStation Boss

Ryu_Niiyama

Gamepass is only unhealthy if Xbox isn't their primary system. If it is the revenue stays in house. Discounts inspire game purchases if that is your main ecosystem.

For instance I am primarily a Nintendo Gamer with Xbox as secondary and PS5 as exclusives only. When I had gamepass I used it to trial indie games I knew were on switch. That turned into purchases on switch. But it also turned into a few purchases of xbox exclusives (south of midnight and coral island which was canceled for switch) despite me already beating the game. But it didn't make me more partial to xbox (more than it being my secondary system). But it did get a constant revenue stream from me to MS until I canceled (since I never had gold consistently I never used the discounts and always paid full price for gamepass). The problem I feel isn't with gamepass but still microsoft's same issue. They aren't giving enough incentive to make themselves the primary platform. They give an amazing argument to be the secondary one though if you aren't fond of playstation for whatever reason (I hate the controllers). The problem is still many people only buy one system.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Feel You've Had Value For Money With Your Xbox Series X|S?

Ryu_Niiyama

Series X owner. For me not really gotten ROI. Xbox for me functions as the go to for multiplats that don’t end up on Nintendo as I prefer the controllers over Sony (Sony is exclusives only or JRPG that runs horribly on switch). Gamepass has been a nice rental service but the majority of the games I buy after playing on gamepass are bought on switch. The few xbox games that I’d been looking forward to (Avowed) I have bounced off so I have been playing series (age of, starfield) that I will eventually get on PC. Yakuza on Series x was going to help migrate me further off of PS (one of the reasons I buy PlayStation systems and I am done with that series now) but it seems those are going to the switch family so I am grateful I only played on gamepass while I waited on sales. Looking at the series x, I have a lot of double dips where a game eventually made it to the switch family. But less exclusive xbox games. As such I have decided this is my last xbox. I may buy a second series x as a backup (my xbone disc drive died so I am paranoid) but I will ride out this gen and I am done. My PS5 library looks worse, so I realized I can get the games I want by playing PC/Switch Family. Especially since I am waiting on TES6 before I build a new PC.

The series x did what I wanted it to…which was replace my xbone, and give me a non sony landing ground for multiplats and gamepass was good at first to allow me to try/rent games. But I am realizing my money and time are better spent in other ways. I hope the brand flourishes given that Microsoft is now the largest game publisher, but I will be playing their games on either PC or Switch family.

So starting with Switch 2 in June, I am a one console woman. Going all digital with this console as well.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 12-13)

Ryu_Niiyama

South of Midnight and AC:Shadows for me. Loving both games but admitting that South of Midnight is probably gonna pull me away from shadows. What a splendid game. While I am Southern, I’m not from the Deep South but woo this game’s opening hours feels so good to play. And it’s finally a game that feels real. Makes it a little hard to play sometimes as I have to take a break. Loving the folklore/mythology callbacks and comparing some of the folklore I grew up with in this. Has a sorta oldschool feel to it that reminds me of earlier, ambitious games. Will be buying this next payday.

Re: Switch 2 Fares Well Against Xbox Series S In Street Fighter 6 Comparison

Ryu_Niiyama

I will be dropping from series x to switch 2. But I will probably still keep buying the DLC for parity. Not sure yet. Really depends on what fighters the switch 2 gets overall. Probably gonna transfer all my Switch fighting games to Switch 2. I really need Bamco to jump in before I can move. Not worried about Capcom although i hope they port Ultra 4 now.

Re: Five Ways The Switch 2 Reveal Has Been A Huge Win For Xbox

Ryu_Niiyama

Not quite. Nintendo has NSO while no where near the same level it does offer a number of benefits that would be paid otherwise (the Zelda upgrades come with NSO) and access to classic Nintendo games…many of which shaped the industry. Nintendo is also still getting a number of games that Xbox isn’t (that Xbox should get mind you. Many of the JRPGs that skip xbox make it a poor comparison to Switch or PS5 and there is no reason for that).

The game everyone is talking about being 80 is 50 in the system bundle. So you don’t have to pay 80. And it’s the only 80 dollar game. The rest are 70 or less just like PS5 and xbox.

The console price maneuver for Nintendo is the Switch Family of systems. Switch is still getting new games including flagships like Metroid Prime 4 (I have preorders into next year). And the S2 is backwards compatible so if you bought a lite at 199.00 you can upgrade to an S2 later and just transfer your library. Or you still buy a Switch (at 299 or 349) which has a library of well over 15000 games (before someone screams shovelware I have over 800 and while my tastes are varied I am not buying Nori Love Rage Shooter 3 or some nonsense) which means that jumping with Switch is still a good starting point to lead you to S2.

I am not saying the Switch 2 is everyone’s cup of tea but if I didn’t have a game system and looked at both the Series X and the Switch 2 offerings, I would buy a Switch 2. Xbox has some serious pluses, but the wins cited in this article requires one to not have researched both options.

Re: How Well Are Xbox Games Selling On PlayStation? Here's What The Data Says

Ryu_Niiyama

Probably the similar issue that late switch ports have. Gamers move on if they have to wait too long. Sony isn’t hyping these games up either (as multiplats) so either people don’t care or they “moved on”. The amount of single system owners that will wait to buy a game on their preferred system is low. Also sometimes people don’t want to double dip. I stopped buying most games day one because I got tired of them coming out on switch a year later which is my preferred console. I haven’t bought the old yakuza games because I own most of them twice already on sony systems but spent most of my time playing them via gamepass on xbox.
