Re: Game Informer's Sudden Closure Is Also Bad News For Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Ryu_Niiyama

@el_pieablo I can only speak for GameStop but in general most of the non corporate positions are at will. I’ve seen store managers seemingly let go with no notice. So I would expect that if GI did have unions when they were bought out then they are just as at will. Most companies try not to do this to positions that are more likely to sue or report them to the labor board due to the headaches involved but if GS needs that money or is thinking about chapter 11, they may not care.

Re: Four Years Later, People Are Still Getting Confused By Xbox's 'Horrible' Console Names

Ryu_Niiyama

I’m gonna say this as politely as I can. Consumers are stupid and lazy. I worked for gamestop and apple for years and people were confused all the time. (And I worked during the WiiU era as well, was straight up ready to hurt myself over the customer idiocy). This includes supposed enthusiasts as well. Some person reads a rumor or a fake mock up or a biased games publication article online and they swarm the stores with their false information like the CEO of the company gave them a hot tip. That’s why I hate console wars so much. And I am gonna say it, in the games and tech industry some men will argue you down incorrectly if you are a woman/girl (started gamestop as a teenager). It got to the point when I got in management I just had my “I told you so” ready.

Consumers get insulted when companies market to them like they are toddlers but honestly that is the best way to get easy sales. Make product names iterative or easy to remember. Period. Saves all involved a headache.

Re: Sony PlayStation 'Regrettably Outspends Us', Says Xbox EMEA Marketing Boss

Ryu_Niiyama

What's so frustrating is there is so much overlap this gen and as such Microsoft should have a larger mindshare than they do...but they don't. If it wasn't for purexbox I wouldn't know what was coming out on xbox, (I just assume what is coming to Playstation with the exception of anime games will show up on xbox eventually). I don't even like playstation. I can keep up with their new games more easily.

But one issue imo is time exclusives. MS has enough money to combat that on the sony side. I get why Nintendo doesn't bother and takes what it can get, but MS should really not be getting games a year or two late. That being said, the practice has trained me to not buy games new for either Playstation or Xbox until at least a year and a half later, so mission accomplished?

That being said the lack of marketing budget does make sense. MS isn’t an entertainment company. Xbox is les about games and more about spreading MS products to homes after windows.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Think This Generation Will Be A Short One?

Ryu_Niiyama

I feel like games still don't feel "next gen" so I think that console makers are gonna extend this one out. The switch successor is on the way in the next year or two but since MS and Sony tend to ignore Nintendo (despite the market share Nintendo eats up) neither are going to see a reason to push new hardware (they may borrow something from Nintendo again but that's about it). As they have costs to recoup.

I'm still sorta feeling buyers remorse for both PS5 and Series X right now so I hope they do extend so that we can really see what these systems can do. As of right now though? I'm going back to PC next gen.

Re: Talking Point: If You Had To Limit Yourself To Three Xbox Games, What Would They Be?

Ryu_Niiyama

@Yousef- I don’t like to play online (too many sore loser messages from randos) and no one in my fighting game group plays VF but me. However VF is my bread and butter. The reason I bought a 360 was for VF 5 Ver C. I also split time between the versions (I still play Ver C because I feel Vanessa got nerfed too much), and I play Ultimate Showdown sometimes (FS is my main though).

Vanessa is my main but I do play Kage or Aoi for oldtimes sake (started with VF 2 so Kage was my main until VF4). I am mostly a Ryu main for SF, but will switch to Makoto or Elena if they are in game. I like all rounder fighters or tech fighters (Vanessa is pretty much all I have ever wanted in a fighting game character) but try to play a woman when I can (even with the Capcom life problem). So grateful that SF6 has a character creator.

Re: Reaction: Microsoft's Constant Tweaking Of Xbox Game Pass Is Becoming Exhausting

Ryu_Niiyama

I get that licenses cost money and that profit needs to be made, but after being a subscription customer (so the prime sucker because I found out about all the conversion tricks too late and didn't use Xbox Live anyway) I'm out once the price hike hits. I wanted to set it and forget it for at least 12 months...but it keeps changing. Might as well as go get netflix subscription (or actually it would pay for my Kadon subscription). I'll just stick with Nintendo and maybe sub game pass on a month of a good game coming out.

Re: GTA 5 Dev Talks Cancelled Single-Player DLC, Says It Was 'Really, Really Good'

Ryu_Niiyama

Not a GTA fan but it always hurts to see a single player franchise get decimated for online multiplayer. Nothing wrong with having teams that support both. One of the things i love about Zenimax. They lifted the TES and Bethesda Fallout franchises to make multiplayer worlds but Bethesda still focuses on single player. Multiplayer folks get a game and single player folks don’t lose their game or franchise. Or have to have multiplayer shoehorned into a single player game.

Re: Starfield Modder Blames Lack Of Support As Elder Scrolls Project Gets Cancelled

Ryu_Niiyama

I mean. If people wanna play TES they will play TES games. And there are projects like skyblivion that already are working on the “merge TES into one world” angle. And then there is the online game which is slowly becoming all of tamriel in one game. Shoehorning TES into Starfield was just square peg, round hole. Not everyone is gonna buy into an idea just because someone has an idea.

Re: Talking Point: Has Your Gaming Slowed Down As You've Got Older?

Ryu_Niiyama

I feel like it varies for me. While I game for fun, I sorta also game to "self medicate" when I am depressed or stressed. When I was younger I was working a lot and managing stress poorly, so I would binge game more. I work just as much now and juggle even more responsibilities, but my ability to manage stress has improved so I game as a hobby now which means it is somewhat more scheduled (unless tired I usually play about 30minutes to an hour a day on weekdays and 2-4 on Saturday). I don't like to binge game anymore because I have other things and hobbies to do (I play several musical instruments and gotta get in that daily practice), plus grad school and work are ramping up, so my focus is on those things. I'm also trying to get my business off the ground so yeah gaming is less of the instant go to.

I probably played more as a young child as it was my primary hobby outside of reading and there were very few kids in my neighborhood (and no other girls my age which super sucked) but I would say if I average it out I have played about the same rate for the past 20 years. Just it is more evenly spread now instead of crazy binges. My reflexes are still good for fighting games and that's my only concern...well that and going blind but that is gonna happen so it is what it is.

Re: Talking Point: Are You Still Interested In Beyond Good & Evil 2 From Ubisoft?

Ryu_Niiyama

Personally it looks so far from BG&E that I don’t see the point. This feels like one of those games with the name but not the soul of its namesake. I will need amazing reviews and to see extensive gameplay in order to buy this game. I also think the full prequel route is a bad idea unless that is the first half of the game. The original ended on a cliffhanger. Get back to that.

Re: Preview: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is A Confident Return for BioWare

Ryu_Niiyama

@GhanaViking that actually really sucks. I actually enjoyed the set sexualities in the earlier games. Inquisition especially, even if it wasn’t in my favor. It’s erasure and terribly reductive to make everyone Bi. That isn’t how sexuality works in real life. But homosexuals tend to get shouted down when we point this out.
