@Ricky-Spanish nice to see you back fresh from your trolling adventures on push 🤣 very much enjoyed you getting into the weeds with the forums my friend
@Stoned_Patrol yeah I'd want all the same things bud. I'm just leaving it for now, waiting until that killer mario or Zelda game comes. Still having a ton of fun on my switch 1 thankfully!
Good write up, partially mirrors my feelings (I don't have space anywhere that I'd use a series s, but I don't want a switch 2 and pro controller for £500 until it's a better device than it currently is)
The biggest change for me this gen was gaming regularly at 60fps. And this is always better when it's stable than dipping around all over the place. The XSS seems to help create a more stable 60fps experience on my XSX, so it's been my favourite console that I've never owned ever 🤣
@Pat_trick I always think that it's lack of sales was the issue as opposed to the machine being a technical hindrance. If it's not in mind from the start and it has to be scaled down to, then memory issues were always going to get in the way. So then it's whether it's worth the extra time and money.
We have to remember that Devs were all in on getting awful ports of games onto the original switch, because the install base is massive. And I bet some of the stuff they learned made games scale better on other machines, just like the XSS (which I personally think was a wonderful idea, just very poorly marketed as always by MS!)
These are weird features that I personally don't appreciate, half the fun of an RPG is growing with your character. But also, I don't really care that it exists, power to the players and all that 🙏
An excellent use of the XSS memory specs that will benefit all users. Given how many games release with poor performance on XSX and PS5, this is refreshing to read
@BattleMonkey to be honest I still love my OG switch, use it quite often and have a decent backlog of Nintendo games (galaxy 1+2 will add to that even more!)
In most ways the switch 2 looks amazing, but you just know they're going to do a better model with better screen and battery life so I'm happy to wait and get a premium upgrade this time 🤞
@FarmDog08 I played the first remake on PS4 and thought it was excellent. Just a new way to experience the characters you love, environments and cutscenes are gorgeous.
It's definitely rubbed a few FF7 purists the wrong way, and having 3 parts is a bit of a cash grab, but I don't care when they're so good
I'm trying to think how a live service far cry would even work. Outside of drop in coop or squading up, it doesn't seem like the far cry formula fits the live service model.
If it was more normal kind of multiplayer with a bit of a factions element that would work but it wouldn't be some kind of golden goose
@MaccaMUFC @Gabrie this is where the auto SR feature (that's not present at launch) gets interesting, obviously for a AAA game this won't really handle higher than 1080p (maybe not even that for some games) but that NPU could potentially allow for higher scaling to bigger screens 🤞
@Markatron84 you know, I never played shovel knight, but it's the old school Zelda vibes that I'm loving. The pixel art looks gorgeous too which doesn't hurt!
This year has been absolutely stellar for games with old school graphics and I'm so here for it. Sea of Stars reignited my passion a couple years ago!
How they've not increased the bitrate cap for so many years is beyond me. Better xcloud is the only way I've been able to reliably enjoy Xbox cloud gaming, which still has the same cap, just a lot easier to force it to the maximum.
I know MS are going to forge ahead with the cloud thing no matter what I think, but if they removed the "beta" term then it had best be actually good, like geforce now ultimate
@TrollOfWar yes agreed. I was thinking exactly of the death stranding strategy being pretty much the only way I'm going to buy intergrade earlier than rebirth. It worked on me before. Fingers crossed 🤞🤞
@TrollOfWar yeah true, I played it on PS4 through PS plus. I'm just thinking from a current POV (I only have series x now as a AAA console) do I bother getting intergrade, or will they announce a bundle later
@Questionable_Duck I sure hope so, be a waste of time if they didn't after porting the others. I suppose I could be ok with a short exclusivity window of about 3 months, if it was development time related
My big big question here is whether there's any point picking up remake intergrade when it comes out. When Rebirth released on ps5, if you pre-ordered it digitally you got remake intergrade for no extra cost, so I'd prefer that route really
I'd like to see a price drop! I played about 90 hours through GPU but I'm not subbed at the mo. The best it comes on offer for digitally is 42 quid, and I want that sweet sweet play anywhere, £30 would be nice for base game!
That's a hefty chunk of change and I'm not even sure we should be calling this a handheld unless you're a masochist. It's way beyond what would be comfortable
Not bought it yet, too much to play rn, but when I do I'll be giving it a buy on Xbox rather than GP so I can use it through play anywhere at my leisure. Excellent starting price too, what a great way to show the industry how it's done!
@BattleMonkey excessive motion smearing/ghosting, screen response time can't keep up with higher frame rates. When I get one I want it to feel like a genuine upgrade as a handheld.
No issues with what it's doing docked. Looks sick.
@TheOfficialJW the use cases are limited on ps5 and XSX though, and it's all software RT. If it can be implemented without a hit to performance like in Avowed or Doom the dark ages that's cool, but on a console when I'm sitting so far away from the TV, I'm not really seeing the advantage over a smooth framerate.
Like, how MGS Delta released is frankly embarrassing.
I'm certainly happy with the approach of not bothering with RT this gen. Once consoles can handle it well, then it should become more common, but until then I just want good res, stable performance and graphics Vs performance options.
@Titntin wow that's some pretty keen insight from a dev haha thanks man!
Lumin is a really interesting one. I saw the DF video where jedi survivor turned GI off for performance mode and all of a sudden it was pretty much perfect apart from around water (that could have been fixed now.) just an example of a Dev pushing engines bells and whistles without even thinking how it will perform across multiple platforms.
@Titntin what I always struggle to understand with UE5 titles that run badly is why it can't be tweaked before release. If you try to set up a game on PC you make the settings work within the memory bounds of your rig, and often try to find a good locked frame rate if you're not running HFR.
So, presumably those same settings you find in a PC version are just chosen for you on a console. If it were me, I'd always find the smoothest 30 and 60 locked settings. I definitely wouldn't want to release something uneven.
But then, I'm not game dev so hopefully some will chime in over the coming weeks
@fatpunkslim yeah, I'd be utterly shell shocked if anything by the coalition didn't run smoothly. No wonder they go round helping other Xbox game studios with optimisation!
@fatpunkslim Indiana Jones was using a version of ID tech wasn't it? I remember something like "motor" being shown in the game opening. Don't think it used UE.
But like yeah, other stuff like avowed, Clair Obscur etc show that when the right choices are made with the scope UE5 can be great!
@Runex2121 man I just can't get myself to take the leap on switch 2. I have a Rog ally z1e and id feel like it was a step backwards until they sort the screen issue.
I could see the Xbox ally x being good if the NPU can create a really good dockable experience (so like, native 1080p or FSR4 levels of quality) because then it's basically a PC switch. That alongside an upgraded switch 2 could be a dream combo for me at some point
@Kaloudz comment #9 spot on dude. There could be a whole inception level of storytelling left to go based on what they've already done. So many different ways they can go with this
Tariffs this, trump that, cost of living blah blah blah. This was caused by MASSIVE overinvestment in gaming because COVID made it seem like a quick and easy place for investors to make a buck. Then suddenly the market "matured" (or rather, got caught by it's own ludicrous ambitions) and the investments went away.
The result is the huge amount of layoffs we are seeing recently. This isn't a political or societal issue; as is always the case with layoffs, it's mismanagement and the ever unachievable goal of growth growth and more growth
If you can't make your game work properly on console you shouldn't release it. I'm sorry. It this isn't an engine issue it's a developer overcomitting on features that can't return a stable frame rate, which is essential for consoles.
My sentiment on this applies to mgs delta and oblivion remastered also. I'm not talking about games that are dropping a few frames here and there by the way, just games that clearly can't run without wild fluctuations
That's awesome. When I'm not subbed to ultimate I never see a decent reason to get core (not a huge multiplayer guy) but cloud gaming is something I use a lot when subbed.
Will depend on which games it applies to Vs what I own, but I'm definitely happy with this news!
I think I just want to reiterate on this thread, what a great product the Xbox ally x is. But the prices are absolutely INSANE. Despite the freedom it offers, and performance looks like it'll be great, it's a handheld PC. Nobody should feel like this is good value compared to a series x, ps5 or even switch 2. Save your money, game elsewhere, and wait for Asus, Xbox and everyone else to sell things for reasonable prices again. The world has gone MAD

TotK on switch 1 (refuse to get Switch 2 until screen is sorted!), with a little bit of FF1 pixel remaster for good measure ♥️
Re: ROG Xbox Ally X Can Reach 'Insane' FPS In DOOM: The Dark Ages, Says Analysis
In my experience you need a high base frame rate (60+) for the latency issue to go away with frame gen, otherwise better to just play without.
Again, the hardware and the internals look cool for this, but I'm still much more interested in the windows lite mode coming with it!
