In the midst of all the craziness about new tiers, price changes and a bunch of new games for Xbox Game Pass, you may have missed that Xbox Cloud Gaming is getting some significant improvements across all tiers of the service.
Firstly, Xbox Cloud Gaming will now be available in "unlimited" fashion to members of the Essential and Premium Game Pass tiers. Cloud-enabled games in both tiers, as well as select "Stream Your Own Game" titles, will be included as part of this. Premium subscribers get the benefit of shorter wait times compared to their Essential counterparts.
"The Essential library is now fully playable on PC, featuring standout titles like Hades, Cities: Skylines – Remastered, Stardew Valley, and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. You also get unlimited cloud gaming, allowing you to play games, including select games you own, on the devices you choose — giving you more freedom to play your way."
"Cloud gaming is also expanding in Premium. Subscribers now enjoy unlimited cloud gaming, including select games you own, and newly added in-game benefits in some of the biggest games like League of Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege X, instantly unlocking cosmetics, characters, and more to enhance your gameplay."
Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate receives the best version of Xbox Cloud Gaming yet, with streaming quality now up to 1440p and the shortest wait times possible. As part of this, the service has left a "Beta" state as well.
"Ultimate subscribers exclusively enjoy our best quality streaming and shortest wait times, so it’s easier than ever to jump into your favorite games. Xbox Cloud Gaming has also officially exited “Beta,” as part of our commitment to make gameplay smoother and more responsive. And we’ll keep expanding the Stream your own game collection for all subscribers."
Of course, there are select instances where Xbox Cloud Gaming doesn't require an Xbox Game Pass membership, and it seems that'll continue - Fortnite has proved very popular as part of the service over the past couple of years.
We'll have to wait and see how the new 1440p option fares for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members (Digital Foundry tested it recently and came away very impressed), as well as how long those wait times end up proving for the Essential tier, but on paper these are some very decent improvements if you're an avid xCloud user.
