Xbox Rewards Adds More Weekly Point Buffs For Game Pass Ultimate Members

Last week, we reported on how Xbox Rewards was buffing its points in some cases and nerfing them in others, and it turned out to be part of the Xbox Game Pass overhaul that was announced on October 1st.

Today, however, Xbox and Microsoft Rewards members are waking up to find that their weekly tasks have also been buffed or nerfed depending on the Game Pass tier they're subscribed to. Game Pass Ultimate members are benefiting quite a lot from the change, whereas Essential and Premium members are losing out slightly.

The three categories that are affected are the Weekly PC Bonus, Weekly Console Bonus and Game Pass Weekly Streaks. The first two now grant you 260 points for playing on PC/console five days per-week, whereas the latter grants you 140 points for playing a Game Pass game across five days per-week - with that number multiplying up to four times if you're able to keep the streak going for consecutive weeks.

Based on early reports, it seems PC Game Pass users are getting the same point scores as Xbox Game Pass Premium.

Altogether, this represents a big bonus for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, but everyone else loses out compared to the old offers - for example, the weekly PC and Console bonuses used to give out 150/175 points per-week. The Weekly Streaks used to provide 100 points (before the multiplier) for Game Pass users as well.

This all comes back to what Microsoft said a few days ago about a new Xbox Rewards system where Game Pass Ultimate members would receive the biggest benefits, and that's clearly the case with these latest changes. Keep in mind that Xbox Rewards differs from region-to-region though, so if you're not seeing the updated point buffs / nerfs where you are, there's a chance you may not be getting them!

Rewards used to make Gamepass pay for itself as in a 3 month period you used to easily be able to earn enough points to get a 3 month Gamepass Ultimate gift card and still have many points left over. Even though they nerfed it last year it was still possible to do it every 3 months. I wonder how this will effect the amount of subscribers in total too as I am curious how many people actually used the rewards this way.

Haha I wondered why mine had gone down to 110. That's outrageous that essential and premium subs still don't keep at least 150. Albeit that's worth about 3p but its still silly

They have reduced the number of rewards points AND the ease of how to get them for years now, so while adding a few more is a nice addition it's hardly a revelation - one step forward, two steps back.

At the same time the previous model was unsustainable. I literally haven't paid Microsoft for Game Pass Ultimate directly this gen, and won't have to until next gen. The last time I paid them was $1 in 2019 for my second Xbox Live Gold conversion. Since then I have extended to 2028 with rewards and a couple of hacks like EA access conversion to top it up. That was always unrealistic to continue.

But there's a balance to be had in the middle, and $30 a month ain't it.

However, the one other thing to consider when it comes to these 'extra' points is that there is still a need to do things for a certain amount of time, especially if you want to get the slightly more obscure points. Sure, you can earn them, which is great, but you are going to be wasting several minutes a day doing them...

"Shrugs" At this point, I just don't care anymore. I've stopped buying anything for the X, or spending time to get the points.

That’s nice said all the countries that MS doesn’t support with rewards (especially after removing the dlc 10% too)

Has anyone from @PureXbox ever asked MS if they plan on extending the rewards to other countries?

@PsBoxSwitchOwner No, but to be honest I don't think we'd get an answer through the channels we use (the people we talk to are focused on Xbox first-party games and features rather than Microsoft Rewards stuff).

This is going to be a decision that's bigger than Xbox because it applies to all of Microsoft Rewards.

@themightyant "AND the ease of how to get them" still not true no matter how many times you say it. This last update, in January I believe, has made it way easier to earn points. The new streaks and quests are just logging into the app and playing any game for 15 minutes. Do you not remember when you had to earn an achievement every single day or log into specific games and do specific activities, sometimes for half an hour? Or when they had points spread all over different apps and activities? It was on the user to actively seek out and stay up to date on what was available and where, to the point that there were youtube channels and subreddits dedicated to keeping people informed.

They've reduced the points and increased the prices, but they've streamlined the whole thing, the apps are now unified, it's all either in the app or on the browser. It's easier to earn them AND to keep track of what is available to earn.

@AverageJoseph I agree a few things like Game Pass 10-15 minutes is easier but across the whole Rewards ecosystem (not just Game Pass) it's a LOT harder. Searches now have a delay and used to be able to be done in minutes. Weekly search rewards are now time gated /drip fed and are tied to specific searches.

Perhaps in your territory the number of points available are still high, or perhaps you don't have the same restrictions, but here in the UK it's a shadow of it's former self. I used to make 10,000+ a month spending around 5 minutes a day over a cup of tea. Now that takes a lot longer, I get half that in the same timeframe... not to mention those points get you far less. The juice is no longer worth the squeeze.

Game Pass Ultimate members are benefiting quite a lot from the change

I'm quite happy to see Microsoft making this change since GamePass Ultimate subscribers bear the brunt of the price hike. Also I keep seeing people complaining about Rewards being nerfed and how it was possible to have years worth of subbing for basically free, being upset now. Did Sony or Nintendo ever had/have something remotely as generous as MS Rewards? Seems to not matter there...

@themightyant The fact that some users have restrictions and others don't, and it seems to be driven by AI with no recourse, is a problem, no doubt. They've also always had a problem with regional parity and availability. I don't have the restrictions, but I just search throughout the day while working and usually don't earn every search point available. I understand not everyone can do that.

But the searching is largely the same activity as before, searching for a shopping item or a restaurant is not an inconvenience, it's just one search a day that is predetermined. Compare that to watching workout videos, or playing shopping games, I think it's in a better place as far as what they're actually asking people to do to earn points.

EDIT: Aside from playing Jewel lol, totally not worth. Like can't we get some different games at least? It's like a cat with a laser pointer, they got distracted by mobile for 5 minutes and then completely forgot about it.

My weekly streak is 700 total after 4x multiplier in the US. Not sure where they're getting the 140x4 from which would only be 560. Must be another region.

@Sol4ris The same folks have been saying 1) Xbox is dead and 2) they are leaving for years now.... And yet they are still here.

Sony overchargeds for PSN with no first day titles and they still pay for it. Entitled people just like to complain, but they ain't going nowhere.

I used to get decent rewards for purchasing games, now they give me 1 point for every dollar spent, it's just a total joke, I would need to spend about $5,000 just to get a $5 reward.

I need to milk it for all it’s worth while my Ultimate is still in date! It expires early March.
