However, Sony have gone a lot harder on timed exclusives this gen. They dont have the same financial clout on acquisitions so they go down this route.

I dont like either doing it to be honest. But it will inflate sales and ultimately thats what both aim for I guess.

And so the old time exclusive complaints will begin. They are all at it. One of the many pitfalls of capitalism unfortunately.

@LtSarge I kinda get where you are coming from. But on the flipside I also think you are reading into it all a bit too much. A handful of PS users moaning Bethesda was a malicious acquisition doesnt make it bad for business. Microsoft absolutely needed a quick boost to their first party portfolio and it made sense.

On the other hand. Sonys approach to their own isnt wrong either. They dont have the spending power that MS do so they have focussed on developers that in the main have worked closely with Playstation. Their approach also makes sense in my view.

I dont think either is going too far and crucially in the current climate both companies and their acquisitons have safeguarded jobs in the process.

@IronMan30 form factor I do agree with you but in general they do get a free pass.

Look at remasters and re-releases for example. Sony handle that really badly releasing remasters at full price and quite rightly get some stick. Nintendo re release Mario Kart 8 and Mario 3D world at full price no such care given.

I probably worded my previous post incorrectly but Nintendo do get a free pass to an extent as trying to convince them to change their approach to anything is like talking to a brick wall.

@anoyonmus kinda tying into what @IronMan30 said about comparisons to Sonic Generations. Push Square have reviewed every Sonic game since 2011 almost comparing them against Generations every time. I feel they have done the same here but I would also agree its at least on par with it.

Just glad PS and Xbox owners can finally play another decent sonic game.

I can only go off the UK but look at the sales of Ghost of Tsushima PS5. People have rebought it. Sony will know there is money to be made there.

Harsh but thats capitalism. I wont defend the practice as I hate it but its a known fact Microsoft can afford to take losses on pro consumer policies and others cant.

They have seen an opportunity to make money and took it. We can hate it all we like but until it stops making money they will keep doing it.

They wouldnt spend the sort of money they did to let the biggest franchises still be shipped off to rival platforms.

Wolfenstein, Doom sequels will go the same way.

He has missed the point and not really touched on cloud gaming which is where the biggest subscriber uptick is going to come from.

Xbox's approach to indies has always been great since Xbox Live Arcade was a thing. Just strengthening it now with Game Pass.

They have the happy medium. Nintendo overdo it (eshop is full of a lot of shovelware) Sony seem to have narrowed their indie reach to a select few (tbf those select few treated really well but I dont get their approach with that) Microsoft have hit that perfect middle ground and Game Pass provides great exposure.

Im in that camp of install, crash into all of my enemies houses, my work office, rival teams football stadia then uninstall 🤣

Most "fanboys" spend more time defending their blind loyalty to a plastic gadget than actually using it.

Defeats the object of what they are trying to achieve.

@S1ayeR74 all three have pockets of toxic fanboys. PS fanbase is just overall larger (at least for now) so their toxic section is just more prominent. But it exists across all unfortunately. I wish all would just enjoy gaming.

I cant knock Phils point here and I think the reaction is a bit harsh. Hes talking about from a personal point of view and a lot of what he said was right.

Microsoft are just so heavily invested in Game Pass now that any impact on the principal of preservation and game ownership has to be accepted.

@Senua been literally tons of articles slating Sonys approach to BC (and perhaps rightly so) but a lot of the talk was prior to launch of PS5 and has died down.

I will say I didnt see much of it around Nintendo. They get a free pass in the media quite a lot.

@carlos82 aye hardware based will still be king for a few years yet. Problem with anything cloud based is global internet speeds just havent caught up with the progress.

@Chaudy with the open world Halo 6 will be a much different Halo. Story will be a challenge so I hope they nail it too.

Its a franchise as much as CoD and Battlefield is just without the annual releases and much much better single player focus.

Sony is reestablishing their indie side and some of the devs complaints were a bit OTT. Any of the big 3 would expect a platform specific trailer for example. Common sense.

Microsoft only really heavily promotes indies actually on Game Pass. Again understandable to a degree GP is their baby right now.

Nintendo if anything promotes them too much. Eshop is full of indie coverage and a lot of it is shovelware.

None of their strategies are perfect really.

No way Insomniac acquisition was a retaliation. They had been working with Sony for years it was a natural fit. Same with Housemarque and Bluepoint. Natural fits.

Same time. Microsoft buying Bethesda was perfect for them. They needed a more immediate and significant boost to their portfolio of studios. It was a natural fit. They could in theory now start looking at devs working closely with them Moon Studios for example.

There was never an arms race. They took different directions.

Not for me but good to see some of the more niche channels getting exposure.

Just need to recreate the chavs queuing outside now.

To be honest. I see more articles talkong about it in the media than I see Sony fans crying about it.

Think its beating a dead horse at this point. Always made sense to lock the titles to the Xbox ecosystem. Only questionmark was whether anything contractual before the acquisition would make any future titles multiplat. E3 answered that question pretty much.

I dont get anyone knocking either Microsofts or Nintendos conferences. Both killed it.

Microsoft we knew would go pretty big and they did. Excited to see first party games on the horizon.

Nintendo dont deserve some of the criticism. They did exactly what they set out to do message was "Hey sorry we have been silent games are coming here is a taste" they will have other directs over the next few months.

Same with Microsoft. Not the last show of announcements we will see from them either.

For me E3 is pretty much a goner in a few years but its still nice to see some companies still trying to keep it alive.

Nadella deserves some credit too. Between the two of them gaming division getting a tonne of investment and attention.

Bethesda purchase wouldnt have happened under Steve Ballmer's watch.

I just hope it isnt all Bethesda games. Its a huge purchase so bound to be most of the showcase but want to see more from other studios too. Wonder what Moon Studios is up to.

Must be a slow news day. Used to be possible to run OG Xbox emulator through a fat PS3s Linux OS with enough savvy.

These types of workarounds been existing for years but far too much time on ones hands needed.

I find this game an odd one. That tax clause with Sony relates to in game purchases I thought and Borderlands 3 has none.

This is likely 2k games taking a general stance against Sonys policy and if it is and they do it across their 2k sports series for example. Maybe just maybe it might provoke a change.

Sad it would take that to do it though.
