Oblivion Remastered PC File Size Leaks Ahead Of Rumoured Xbox Game Pass Launch

That’s big for what’s supposedly a near 1:1 remake in a new engine.

I really hope that this is more of a remake than a simple remaster. I've seen people talking about some of the dialogue, quests etc. as being not great, but also those same people saying that they add to nostalgia of the game. However, if, like me, you have never played the game, nostalgia counts for nought. Therefore, if a quest is poor, or the voice acting isn't up to the standards you would hope for by todays standards, then I really hope they have sorted it so that they are no longer below standard. By all means, have the ability to revert back to previous audio, or graphics (though I never understand why people would want to do that, beyond being able to see how much the game has been improved), but the default setting should be that everything is better than it was when the game first released...

Well if it's that big it must be a remake I'm looking forward to playing it but how this whole "shadow drop" has been handled with the constant leaks and fake release dates talked about by tools looking for publicity has been really annoying🤬

Sadly we live in a world where port, remaster and remake get thrown around without consideration. Companies marketing also don't help in this matter.
I can't say for sure, but as far as I know the first ones to screw this up were Activision with the Crash trilogy.

@acmiguens I wouldn't say they screwed up crash trilogy as far as I know it sold well and I know it plays very well 🤷

I can deal with that. Larger than I was expecting but surely a remaster / remake of a game this large will come with a lot of extra files and resources that take up more space. Either way, I look forward to seeing it land. I missed out on the craze the first time round so I'm keen to see what I missed out on.

The problem is there's no clear terminology to cover the spectrum of these kinds of games. If it releases 1:1 with improved textures, it's a remaster like The Thing, but if they rebuild the game from scratch and make obvious changes it's a Remake like Resident Evil 4.

What about a game like Halo where the gameplay is untouched, but they've overhauled it with Remade assets and visuals? What if it's like Ninja Gaiden 2 Black where they remade the entire game in a new engine, but otherwise it remains almost identical to the original? At what point does a game transition from being a port to a remaster to a remake and what about those games that exist between the lines?

As far as anybody can tell, Oblivion looks like it'll be on par with Ninja Gaiden 2 with it being a new engine, but otherwise the same game. Perhaps a flourish of new visuals, but I don't expect them to change anything in the gameplay or item models. We'll likely still have the same potato-faced NPCs and wonky UI. I do suspect the physics will be significantly different from the original, however, so it'll be interesting to see how the game feels with it's loss of zany chaotic physics (would love to be able to actually decorate my home without ***** constantly exploding everywhere, so I welcome this change personally, nostalgia be damned.)

@Ricky-Spanish They didn't screw the games themselves (though I do believe them to be overhyped). But they remade the games and branded them as remasters. I can't recall a previous game to have done so.

@RegnumSolipsi You kinda gave the answer there. And 10+ years ago, people could tell the difference. This whole confusion is a more recent thing. Heck... I've seen professional journalists in gaming say "I wonder if it's an HD port or a remaster". That hurt.

Let's get RE4 as an example since it's been all over the place.
The game released on GameCube. Then, it was ported to the PS2. There was a visual downgrade and some content added, but in terms of visuals and gameplay, they were very similar or exactly the same. Then we had another port, this time for the Wii. Slightly better graphics and new motion controls, but, again, essentially the same game. Still a port since it was SD to SD.
Now comes the fun part. RE4 was released on the Zeebo (may it rest in pieces), but that was a huge visual downgrade and there were several changes made to it. That was a demake. Not a good one, but it fits.
Then we have RE4 for the PS360 which was a remaster. Same game, but went from SD to HD. Same thing with its other releases when the remaster version was ported to the PS4, XOne, PC and Switch.
And we finally reach the RE4 remake. Brand new engine, graphics, etc.
To sum up, at least my view:
Parallel transition makes it a port.
Exact same game but in higher definition (SD/HD or HD/4k), remaster.
Game is visually remade, remake. Even if the gameplay is the same. Just to throw two other examples: Super Mario RPG and Zelda Link's Awakening. Aren't they both remakes on the Switch?

I hope I made sense. And as a farewell, Final Fantasy VII Remake... is not a remake, which is just hilarious

@acmiguens In some regards I agree, but others I don't. By your definition, Halo CE and Halo 2 Anniversaries are Remakes, but I don't believe they are. Supposedly they are currently working on a Halo CE Remake that will be rebuilt from the ground up, but if those are two different things, do they use the same definition?

It is clear to me that there is no standard, as in agreed-upon, definition of remaster. I've decided it's not even worth debating, and I'll just leave it to marketing teams to label as they will!

@RegnumSolipsi A game can be remade twice. Just as it can for ports and remasters.
Just take a look at what was done in the PS360 gen. Splinter Cell trilogy, PoP trilogy, Beyond Good and Evil, Jak trilogy, Sly trilogy, Ratchet and Clank trilogy. These were all remastered in HD. And a bunch more. PS4/One gen also got a bunch of remasters. I don't see Halo CE and especially Halo 2 An fitting that group.
And we don't know exactly how this new project will work, but I see it this way:
The 2 remakes we've got are faithful remakes. Visually remade from the ground up, improved sound and resolution. But still the same games at heart. Kinda like: Zelda OoT 3D, Link's Awakening and Super Mario RPG.
What I believe they are working on is an ambicious remake. A full reconstruction of the original game. Mind you, I still consider it a remake, but that level of commitment I believe deserves it's own subcategory of reimagining. Like RE2, for instance. It's still RE2, but completely rebuilt from the ground up. And not many games fit this category.
At least, that's how I see it.
To further push my point. There's a lot of confusion as to what exactly this Oblivion version is. If they'd announced it simply as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and desbribed it as a faithful remake, do you think this level of confusion would have happened?

@IronMan30 Assassin's Creed Odyssey leaked because of a keychain if I'm not mistaken. At least it was a funny way to do it

I know nothing about game programming, but is there a chance that the original had certain files compressed, to fit onto the disc at the time, but now it's digital, it doesn't need compressing?
