Xbox Is Raising The Price Of Consoles, Games And Accessories

I said this was inevitable and not just a Nintendo issue when they announced their prices. Unfortunately we are living in a reality where everyone's costs are increasing and sadly any next generation console is now going to be very expensive

Ugh. Inevitable, but still feels slimy. Glad I got my Series X in 2021.

This generation sure has been crazy with the prices. That tells me the rumors of the next gen consoles costing $700 or even $800 might be true, as Sony and Microsoft look to no longer take huge losses on hardware. Glad i have all mine bought and paid for. Sad for those that can’t afford to get into console gaming, this didn’t help.

@carlos82 It definitely costs them less to make these consoles now then when they were released. This has nothing to do with costs and everything to do with greed.

They literally saw Sony raise prices last month and said ‘we can go further!’. Digital and disc editions of Series X both +£20 more expensive than the PS5 equivalents. Do they even want to sell consoles anymore?

Baffling how they think XSX can compete with PS5 at these prices. Its whole point of existence is value for money since they gave up on having exclusive games and yet here they are partially throwing that selling point away.

No news on what the $80 game prices converts to for other currencies. What’s the bet it’ll be £80? Of course it will, who am I kidding? Ironically, despite taking the flak for being the first to raise game prices, Nintendo’s selling premium Switch 2 games for £67 in UK - so less than the £70 Microsoft are already charging before this latest announced price rise! Really poor look for Microsoft here, their currency conversions are utter crap.

What a big load of BS, I could understand the console raising prices, but it should only affect the US since the tariffs are a US problem but we’ve seen every company raising prices everywhere else to offset the increase there, it sucks.
Pricing themselves above the PS5 while becoming multiplatform is yet another death sentence for Xbox consoles, even the PS5 Pro is now cheaper than the most expensive Xbox!

What I find unjustifiable is $80 dollars Xbox games, they literally saw Nintendo doing it with Mario Kart and said why not us with Call of Duty…

To raise prices after recording huge profits is abit galling and doesn’t look very good. People here will obviously try and justify a 20% (approx) increase.

Sony will soon follow suit on game prices.

$400 range for a Series S is rough. That's a 30% increase. I guess in comparison to the SX it's still cheaper but now we're roughly at the same price as a much more powerful PS5. It also undercuts the Series S' value prop for a "foot in the door" console that's supposed to be a lighter investment.

Leisure activities like gaming are going to be harder and harder to justify when groceries/clothes/necessities continue to climb, and that's before you start raising prices. If Xbox sales were looking rough before, we ain't seen nothing yet. And $80 per game is a lot to ask when we're still waiting on many of this gen's big exclusives to arrive.

If I didn't have this generation's Xbox at the halfway point (or later) in its lifecycle, I'd probably look around at the current economic situation, the time left on this generation, and figure I'd just save up and wait for what's next.

@RBRTMNZ definitely based upon what? Trump has raised tariffs astronomically for parts from China and Nintendo moved some production to Vietnam to avoid those but manufacturing costs are higher there.

XSS now costs samey as a full fledged PS5, XSX 2TB costs more than PS5 Pro. Which is according to MS themselves best place to play their own games 🤦‍♂️

As Gene Park noted on a podcast, major publishers were waiting for Nintendo or Rockstar to price a game at higher than $70 (basically to take the bad PR first, and yes, specifically those two publishers) and then follow suit. Looks like there was some weight to that claim.

Though interestingly the games going to $80 will affect more people on Playstation than Xbox due to not having the option of Gamepass.

Nintendo set the precedent with Switch 2 and the rest followed suit. Everyone was just waiting for one of the big companies to do it.

@Neither_scene yeah and Nintendo games rarely go on sale and only small discounts when they do, so they’re certainly not off the hook here. The $1=£1 pricing for Xbox games is starting to look pretty greedy is all. Same for Sony too of course.

Anyone, and I honestly mean anyone, who truly thinks that the next Xbox will not come in at close to £1000, is living in dreamland. It's either that, or not a PC-lite console. You simply cannot have both. A decently spec'd PC-lite console, was always going to be approaching £1000 anyway, and this puts a huge nail in the that coffin.

Let's be honest with ourselves; the 2TB console now costs more than the Pro, yet it is not as good as the Pro. Let that sink in for a moment. Now consider that the Pro, is in no way close to being a PC-lite console. You want to see all the additional bells and whistles inserted into the next Xbox console so that it comes out looking like a PC, and you are going to have to pay for it.

So, when Microsoft wheel out this all singing, all dancing Pc-lite console that so many are expecting (biggest technical leap, er... hello?), expect to be told to cough up £1000 for it too (maybe even more, who knows?). Then you have to ask yourself are you willing to pay that? And let's not forget, and I've said this recently, Game Pass will be going up within the next 2 or 3 months.

Anyone celebrating Microsoft's record breaking returns shown today needs to ask themselves why now, of all times, do they see the need to increase prices? The answer is pretty simple really; they are not your friend, never have been, never will be. Only money matters, and they want everything you can afford, and then some, and if you are not going to wear that shirt, they'll have that too. In fact screw it, even if you were planning on wearing that shirt, they'll have it anyway...

Currys UK Series x disc was at £499.99 this morning.
Now we know why.

It doesn’t bother me much, as the last first-party Xbox game I bought was Sea of Thieves, after which I got game pass, so the only games I buy now are 3rd party. However, I suppose they’ll go up too.

Not surprised. Although a quick scan shows that most things are going up approximately 25% it seems except the XBox Series X console which seems to have jumped $100 (??)

If your hardware is more expensive that just means you'll ultimately be selling less and people will be less likely to jump from starting-generation models to mid-generation models. They will wait for the next gen.

Game companies will be hit the worst I think. Except hardcore fans, most people will probably not buy games on release but wait until they are on sale. As such the initial sales #s will be (relatively) lower and more games will be considered (failures) with all the ramifications we're seeing today. Even now you can read a lot of review comments or announcement post comments and people are saying they'll wait and buy it when it is on sale. Some of this is just the fact that there are too many games out there and backlogs are full.

@StylesT Same. I got a 4080 Super last year and I’m content with that for the next 5-8 years. My dream as a kid was to have all the modern, major consoles and a sick gaming PC. I have them all, but going forward I will not be sticking to that.

Switch 2 for convenient multiplayer games + some Nintendo exclusives and my gaming PC for everything else. This hobby is getting too expensive and I don’t even get a whole lot of time to game these days as it is.

If the downward spiral doesn't stop, I could see XBOX Game Pass being about the same price as a full price game in 2023, and it still be 'good value'.

Very pleased with meself that I got a series X for £350 from CEX about this time last year, with 5 year warranty.

This is really heavy. No generation like this before. Even though I would say, the Series X with disc drive is the worth that price.

I already have my Series X so I guess I'm good for now, but there used to be a time when aging tech actually got cheaper with time.

The writing was on the wall when Nintendo took the plunge and turned the dial up to 11 on pricing for the Switch 2.

I absolutely believe that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony understand there will be some churn in their customer-base from these changes, but I genuinely hope they vastly underestimated how hard it'll hit. Personally I think they all deserve a 3DS-like clapback from consumers.

I remember a time when consoles always dropped in price multiple times during their lifespan and were a fraction of the price the were when they launched by the end of their life. Now have been seeing them not only maintaining their price throughout their life but now going up.

Well, guess I’m glad I got my X last year. My first and last XBox!

Still on the fence about keeping my Switch 2 preorder. This might just be my last console generation if things continue this way. Which is honestly fine, my backlog is so massive across all platforms that I could stop buying games today and be good till I’m in my seventies!

Gaming will definitely become a more expensive hobby. The big picture is that wages/salaries simply don't keep up with inflation and the cost of living for 90% of us. It's a complex economic system but it's always skewed toward the wealthy because of the people in high levels of government. It's particularly stark in the US where corporate lobbyists have most politicians in their pocket. We're now seeing that on steroids and it affects everyone.

GTA 6 price points are going to be a madness

Not exactly a huge surprise but not many are buying Xboxes so this will just bring the current gen of Xbox hardware to its end even quicker.

Xbox is a cloud company. Either accept it or don’t. Of course they will offer some hardware, but cloud and multi platform is what they are now and will grow into even more in the future.

I am glad that I already have all the consoles that I need - Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch1. Outside of that the Evercade, Quest and Atari + range take most of my time anyway. I think it's mostly bye bye to modern gaming for me. Meh.

Besides, you can in 2025 use a VCR Xbox One and still have a good enough experience, cloud for high end and those games which aren't released on it, and all others that are run just fine anyway. I am sure my Series X will be good for another 5 years plus at least. It's probaby all PC and cloud after that anyway... if I want modern gaming at that point. We will see, feeling tapped out at this point, modern gaming = No innovation, diminishing returns on graphics, high prices... Yawn.

@carlos82 This. Nintendo wasn't being greedy with the Switch 2, Sony wasn't being greedy with the PS5 price increase, and Microsoft isn't being greedy with this price increase. It's just the economic reality of the world right now, especially in the United States. We don't have to like it - I certainly don't - but we ought not delude ourselves into thinking this isn't a reasonable and rational thing for these companies to do in the face of inflation and rising production and import costs.

That's why I almost never buy games day one, I prefer to pay and use game pass ultimate and try to maximize Microsoft rewards to have gift cards and then buy games on sale on my wishlist.

Yeah I can still have a lot of fun with 2600 River Raid, Gas Hog, Dark Cavern and so many more, plus Atari are releasing new carts now, so even that new game itch is covered.

Evercade has lots of Atari and other retro console and computer games covered, plus arcade too.

I really feel a lot of people will step away from modern gaming as it becomes increasingly void of new ideas and ever higher prices. I'll still watch and keep up with releases, but my money is best spent on retro and new software on retro platforms. Besides, retro games respect your time more and don't keep trying to put their hand in your pocket for more money after purchase.

As long as I can continue to play PUBG then that's most of my modern gaming time taken there.

Honestly, even before the price hike games were too expensive! Wonder if next gen is even going to be worth it. If MS is clever they make a console with some advanced AI stuff and leave the graphics as they are.

The new prices seem crazy in terms of value.
1TB Series S is £349.99 when I got my launch PS5 digital for £359.99, it’s also £90 cheaper than a digital Series X.
Obviously Sony have since raised their prices and will no doubt again.
Just makes you wonder how much value you’re getting out of the current gen consoles if you buy now.

Thankfully I got my 1TB Carbon Black Series S for £269.99 off Amazon last April/May time. I went with that option as I could pay Amazon over 3 months at 0% interest and was a moving in present to myself so didn’t want to use my savings as I wanted to spend the money on my house.
I got the 1TB storage card for £114.99 again off Amazon the end of last year so my Series S with 2TB only cost £25 more than the new price for the 1TB model!

Thankfully I got two years worth of game pass vouchers off CD Keys for £160 last year.
I earlier worked out if I had bought Forza H5, Indiana Jones, COD BO6 and Clair Obscur ex33 on my PS5 it would have cost £240…that doesn’t take into account I’ve also played Starfield, Forza Motorsport, COD MW3 and will download MW2.

My aim is just to stick to game pass games on Xbox and try and tackle my PlayStation backlog this year and maybe get GTA6.
Everything else can wait til it’s discounted next year.

I'm going to be able to trade in my 3 Series consoles for more than I paid for them. I've already seen Series S trade in deals for more than I paid for mine.

It is insane to think that I've saved money by buying my consoles at launch. These are awful and just stupid times. My only hope is that none of this can possibly be sustainable. Especially with gaming which is a commodity entertainment medium. No way sales don't take a huge hit when this is happening with so many products and services. Hopefully, the world makes a lick of sense before next gen launches and I can actually afford a new console.

Remember how consoles used to get discounted years into a console generation? Yeah, to say things are moving in the wrong direction is a bit of an understatement this gen. I am just glad I bought a 1TB Series S with an Xscreen last year, there is no way I could justify doing that now. Heck I remember eyeing one of those 2TB Series X consoles as a possible upgrade for my old launch SX, now there's no way I would consider that at $730, that would be $800 after tax! Simply outrageous to be asking that much for a console, heck if I would spend that much I would buy a PS5 Pro because at least it's a proper upgrade.

Honestly, this console industry if really pushing me towards going all PC in the future.

Consoles used to be great value, and very affordable. And also got price cuts, the further into the generation we got. Now they are getting way too expensive, for the aging hardware included in those boxes.

@kmtrain83 I already said that Switch 2 might be my last launch as I’m approaching 40 and my physical health isn’t getting better. I doubt by the time the next gen hits I’ll be able to stand in line, much less be able to drop $1000 on a console.

@WildConcept6 and I even bought that 2TB Series X as an upgrade to my launch one as well as getting the Microsoft Complete for the 3 years on it in anticipation once I saw the PS5 Pro price and Sony raising the PS5 prices everywhere else but here. EVERYONE I knew said I was nuts. But not only was the internals better with a smaller CPU and less power and heat, but now the price increase on top of that. At least I got a console that’s guaranteed for three years that runs more efficiently than my launch X.

Always gotta be one step ahead when possible.

That's me definitely not buying anything day 1 now... Bought my Xbox series X for £300 with games second hand basically like new. And will definitely buy from CD keys 90% of the time now. I only do the odd month on game pass now aswell. Thought Xbox was the cheaper option and I actually preferred the features on the console to the PS5. Microsoft have basically stripped back any reason to own an Xbox and then thrown the prices up aswell! It's not great either Xbox going down the pan because then Sony will have control over the console market with their shady moves.

All of these major corporations are in on this together. No wonder why Phillip Spencer had been so busy glazing Nintendo the past few months.

At this rate of console price inflation, I can't see myself going for the next gen xbox console, especially if it is a device primarily for gaming. PC game pass is cheaper and I need a PC/laptop, might as well spend a little more & up the gaming capabilities...

Has got more expensive across the board specially when Sony's first party is at it weakest. So by raising prices of Xbox games. Keeping Games Pass the same price. While Xbox owners who do fork out $80 get advantage of play anywhere. So they can play also on PC or when the next gen hybrid Xbox or Xbox Asus handheld arrives.

Higher prices means now, more than ever, people are going to be more restrictive with their leisure funds. Therefore a person is more likely to get the platform they can play more games on. That is to say anything except Xbox.

This is essentially Xbox's path to being a cloud gaming platform and 3rd party publisher instead of making consoles.

Glad I upgraded my PC before everything got screwed over.

Here in the Netherlands the (online) retailers still sell the consoles for the old prices, only the microsoft store has raised the prices.

I'm sure it's the same in other countries as well.

Maybe this is a chess move by Microsoft to push gamers who were still doubting to buy an Xbox to buy it now for the old stock prices at the retailers.

I'm ready to pay for INNOVATIVE games and not sequels or remastered versions (hello Mr Sony, what's up ??). Sadly it's becoming rarer and rarer each year...
I think it's a "clever" move from Microsoft for the selling of gamepass. I'm not sure if the real sales of those games will be there.
It's good for the consumer but I'm not sure that those "sales", EVERY week on Xbox store are a good sign for players. They'll wait for... A sale for any games, especially with games at 80 € and won't buy day one !

Increase in price of games sucks across the board, but I always wait for deep discount, so no impact personally. On consoles, I will scale back from all 3 to 1 for next 'generation'. Likely a switch in 18-24 months then new PS in a few years after. Not Xbox as it is a nice to have for GP, but they way Rewards have been throttled, won't be using GP much in the future.
*First party Nintendo games being the exception. But will be much more selective w Purchases there

@Toot1st Except they didn't. Only the physical Switch 2 games cost more and it's because they're using a new kind of cartridge. Digital games will still cost at most $70, and even then Nintendo releases most of their games for $60 still, so most of the physical games will only be $70. What's Microsoft's excuse?

@PsBoxSwitchOwner of course. But what kind of strategy is it to raise prices on consoles that are already struggling to sell? They’re more expensive than Sonys consoles now. They’re pushing many customers to just get a rival console instead.

If next gen consoles cost upwards of €700, good luck getting an install base in the tens of millions, as this is becoming a luxury hobby the masses can't afford.

@abe_hikura That type of calculation does not make sense for inessential goods. People are spending so much more on essential goods that discretionary budgets have all but disappeared. This is an insane time for these companies selling inessential goods to be raising prices. They might make a little more now but it will further erode the video games market by excluding millions of players. The console market is already contracting rapidly and this will accelerate that trend making gaming a less profitable business. All these corporations cant ever think any more long term than their next quarterly report.

Also you really shouldn't call what happened over the last five years inflation. It is verifiable corporate greed. Their finances are publicly available and show this clearly.

I'm sorry but those Series S prices now are wild! I'm glad I got my Series X and S consoles before the initial price increases nevermind these!

Microsoft is an American company who is about to be paying a lot more to get stuff made in China and they will not absorb the costs

@ZuneTattooGuy Oh I'm well aware of that. It's just not exactly fair how Americans fired for this but the rest of the world has to suffer too because companies won't just pass on the full increase to Americans and spread it around instead.
