If this is true (and I mean IF given it’s not confirmed), this doesn’t seem surprising at this current stage!
Based on their history, they probably haven’t greenlit Outer Worlds 3 as they’re likely working on DLC for it. Avowed we’ve not heard anything about DLC, and they’re bringing turn-based to PoE which suggests they’re keen to expand the world.
This makes sense to me at this stage, and I suspect they’ll greenlight Outer Worlds 3 in the future once the DLC is nearing completion
@Browntrouser You say that, but Phil’s words are very telling:
“We will share updates updates from our studios and a diverse lineup of games from creators predominantly located in Japan and across Asia.”
The fact that it’s predominantly means there will be some non-Asian games showing up. Wonder which non-Asian studios will show up?
I’m guessing Bethesda shows up with a Japan-focused Starfield trailer, and maybe a Japan-related track for Forza Motorsport. Would love a Halo Infinite Japanese trailer too while we’re at it!
Square Enix titles coming to Xbox, such as Octopath Traveler 2, FFVII Remake
New look at Kojima’s project
Tease of Tango Gamework’s next game
Some more GamePass drops.
If I had to make a wild prediction, Tomonobu Itagaki’s studio partners with Xbox to release a new exclusive (he then joins Xbox after the ABK deal closes).
Maybe a little crazy in my predictions, but I don’t think they’re too unrealistic (save that wild one)
@Dan1283 I’m surprised you think the first half of the year was dire for GamePass. In my opinion they had quite a lot of good games on it:
Hi-Fi Rush, Persona 3 and 4, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Goldeneye 007, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Ghostwire Tokyo, Minecraft Legends, Ni No Kuni II etc.
Personally, I think GamePass has had a great 2023, and 2024 looks to continue that.
Agree with people's thoughts about a teaser trailer appearing soon, but I think Game Awards is a bit far away.
They may want to do it as Gamescom, but I also don't think they'd want to promote or tease something else before Starfield drops...
Personally, I think Tokyo Games Show is where it appears. Xbox has been putting on a show these past two years and we know how keen they are to have more of a presence in Japan. This seems like a good way of doing so, if you ask me.
@Somebody That first part is true, but even just one returning staff member would be good for optics.
I agree, I think they'll probably announce it early via CGI to help drive recruitment. Seems to have worked well for Fable at least. I wonder how much sharing of resources and knowledge there is between the two Arkane Studios (Austin and Lyon)? Would have thought them both using the in-house Void engine and jointly working on and sharing the tech would be more beneficial for the studio...
@Somebody I wouldn't be surprised if one of the first things they do is try to regain some of those former employees. Would be the best way to gain some positive PR if you ask me.
Can I ask why there hasn't been an article about the most recent State of Decay 2 update?
It has to be more than 24 hours since they first talked about it, the patch notes are out and it's a First-Party game from Xbox. I know it's not as big as Sea of Thieves, but I thought there would still be an article about it...
Given a lot of games are here with sequels currently in the works or planned (Gears, Fallout, State of Decay, Hellblade, Fable), I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft Flight Simulator gets added here before the release of MFS 2024.
I also imagine The Outer Worlds (base game) will be added before the release of The Outer Worlds 2. Would be a smart way to get people interested in some of their upcoming sequels if they do that, in my opinion at least...
@Tharsman Moon wanting to remain independent makes sense, they always wanted Ori to be on more consoles than just Xbox.
I agree, they definitely don't want to lose out on a strong partner like Asobo. On the Killer Instinct front, I still think they should just create a studio with Ken Lobb as the studio head.
While it's interesting to see some of the names they were considering, I'm shocked to see no mention of any of their partner studios such as Asobo Studio, Moon Studios, Don't Nod etc.
I would have thought Asobo would be prime candidates given their work on Microsoft Flight Simulator
@RareFan Yeah, I bet with how well Sea of Thieves is doing, the heads at Xbox probably said to Rare: "Take as much time as you need for Everwild, as long as you keep on delivering content for Sea of Thieves".
@elpardo1984 I agree that it needs a sequel, I'm just concerned as to who would make it.
I've always thought the easiest thing for Microsoft to do is simply create a new studio, have Ken Lobb be the studio head, and dedicate that studio to making Killer Instinct. Fighting games are seeing a massive surge, and Xbox should really try and get in on that.
@Chaotic_Neutral Man, whatever happened to Second Extinction? I remember it showing up in the First Look at Series X Gameplay show that Xbox put on, but since then it's been in Early Access.
Wonder if we'll finally see it leave later this year. Maybe a trailer for it will appear at the Showcase given it originally launched into GamePass?
@kihaennem Totally! Give it a new fresh of paint and add a new character or two to the roster (Doom Slayer feels like a good fit for the game, or even Master Chief with his grapple hook)
@themightyant "That isn't direct competition for Microsoft's cloud subscription model (Game Pass) where you get all the games included for just £10.99 per month."
Well, YES and NO. You're right in that in order to play these games on other cloud services you must first own a copy of the game, thereby still giving money to Microsoft/Xbox in the process. That said, every person playing these games through GeForce Now or another (non Xbox Cloud Gaming) Cloud service is a person that is likely not playing it through XCloud.
In order for them to play it through GeForce Now or other, they still have to pay those cloud service providers. Therefore while Microsoft is getting the biggest cut of the cheque here, they're still giving rival cloud services publicity, a potential increase in subscriber count AND a potential increase in profit for them.
So Microsoft benefits, as do these cloud services. Seems everyone wins in this scenario, but if I'm wrong I'd love for someone to correct me in the comments. I'm not fully aware of how these cloud services operate so I may have misunderstood some of the finer details...
Maybe I'm being a little cynical with this question, but what exactly does Jeff Grubb bring to the gaming space?
All he does is leak things and thus spoil the surprise of going into any event blindly, or talks about projects which have been cancelled internally before reveal or delayed internally. I just don't get what that contributes other than feeding into the negative drama (such as with Xbox with internal delays for games such as Everwild or Avowed, or with Nintendo and his claiming Metroid Prime Remastered claim would show up years before its eventual reveal or the claims of Zelda HD Ports from Wii U, which only sets incorrect expectations leading to people being disappointed by Nintendo Directs).
Am I being too harsh? I'm just struggling to think of any positive contribution Jeff's so-called "reporting" brings to the gaming industry.
@BrilliantBill I wouldn't be surprised if the team at Playground asked to use that engine. It's what they're familiar with, so they probably wanted to stick with that engine and modify it for the purposes of an RPG.
Plus, with them sharing the engine with Turn 10, it means they can collectively build and refine the engine, which is probably why the Forza games look and run so darn well.
@BrilliantBill They came out and said they were using the Forza engine for Fable, so it's definitely going to take a while to get the engine suited for an open-world RPG.
The "games available in different services" could mean we see more games going to Playstation Plus like we've just seen announced with Minecraft Dungeons.
Maybe more Rare classics will also make their way to Nintendo Switch Online? I hope to see games like Diddy Kong Racing make a return. Love that game to bits (perhaps controversially more than Mario Kart 64).
Here's my prediction for this: Xbox announces a Starfield Developer Direct scheduled for the end of March, claiming to "only focus on Starfield". As the direct opens, we get a brand new trailer for Ghostwire Tokyo showcasing the Series X improvements as well as additional content.
Like they did with Hi-Fi Rush, they drop it later that day.
It makes sense that they'd want to market it properly, and that's the only upcoming event from them (that I know of anyway).
@Tharsman Yeah, and the added improvements to the Series X version plus GamePass should help it have a little bit of a resurgence. Especially if people that enjoyed Hi-Fi Rush choose to try out more of Tango's games!
@Banjo- While he does say a lot of things that are wrong, some of the big Xbox surprises I feel were leaked because Jeff didn't keep his mouth shut like Xbox + Kojima or Pentiment.
In fact, it was his comparing Pentiment to Disco Elysium that caused a lot of trouble for the team working on it at Obsidian, as they felt they had to justify statements they never even made. I know Josh Sawyer has expressed his frustration about this on Twitter a number of times...
I'm gonna be honest, I'm tired of constantly hearing about all these things going on at Xbox from people like Jeff Grubb. Why do we need to know that this is what's happening at The Coalition? I'd rather it were quiet until the team is ready to show off what they've been working on.
I like being able to go into a showing from these companies and be surprised (like with Hi-Fi Rush). I love the shock factor of these showcases, but with people like Jeff Grubb constantly talking about everything happening in the industry that seems to be becoming more of a rarity these days. Am I alone in my feelings here?
After the success of the Developer_Direct, here’s what I’m predicting:
We get this Starfield direct at the end of March, but before we dive into Starfield the direct opens with a new trailer for Ghostwire Tokyo, showcasing the new improvements added to this latest release. They shadow drop it like they did with Hi-Fi Rush and then proceed with a nice Starfield deep dive.
While I'm not surprised they're going ahead with FC7, I'm also not liking the direction Ubisoft is going...
Their focus on so-called "Mega-brands" leads me to worry that they're going to ruin their most popular franchises simply by oversaturation. The amount of Assassins Creed games coming up, the amount of games with the Tom Clancy name attached, and now their starting to branch out their Far Cry series. At what point is it all too much?
Looking back at this, I'm surprised they didn't update the text to display at a higher resolution. Having a 4K game with pixellated text just looks odd to me.
@K1LLEGAL 100% agree. Tired of seeing "X game has been leaked" everytime I go on Twitter. It's nice to watch a Games Showcase and see First-Party Xbox games I've never heard of before. Now, everything seems to be known, and if it isn't it's almost certainly leaked before the showcase (looking at you Jeff Grubb)...
@Skedaddle Doing a little digging, the upgrade is being handled by Racoon Logic, which is a studio formed from several former Typhoon Studio members with initial funding from Tencent and other sources.
So it's being handled by some of the original devs, which is a good sign.
@themightyant The rumour mill for a while has been that The Coalition is working on a smaller non-Gears title before they release Gears 6. Hopefully that's true, would love to see what else that studio is capable of...
@MrN0vmbr I suspect they won't announce the release date for Ghostwire Tokyo until the end of March at the earliest. With Deathloop, they didn't talk about the Xbox version until the 1-year exclusitivity window had ended. I suspect they'll do the same again here, although I'd be interested to see if they add any new content to it for the Xbox release.
@Rmg0731 If this were just a spoken report, I'd be hesitant to buy it too. But the fact that he's wrote an article on Windows Central and published it shows he is confident in this being true. Otherwise you're throwing away any credibility that you have as a journalist.
I guess we'll see over the next few weeks though...
My prediction for the first half of Xbox's 2023 calendar, following this information is:
January: AOE 2 (Console Release) February: Minecraft Legends March: Ghostwire Tokyo, Halo Infinite Season 3 April: Forza Motorsport May: Redfall June: Starfield
My guesses for the beyond that are Hellblade II, a Gears of War collection (akin to MCC) and Contraband for the second half of 2023. Think Avowed will be Q1 2024 so it doesn't launch too close to Starfield, and Fable, Everwild and State of Decay 3 will round out the rest of 2024.
@Spaceman-Spiff My thoughts are Hellblade II from the First-party, and Contraband from Avalanche Studios on the Third-party publishing side. Maybe Avowed Q1 2024?
@Grumblevolcano Apparently they're updating AOE: Definitive Edition to the same engine as AOE II: Definitive Edition, so I suspect we'll see that come to consoles after the engine upgrade.
@Dezzy70 Okay, wasn't sure if you were claiming it as fact, but if it's your own prediction fair enough.
My predictions for 2023 from Xbox are something along the lines of:
Redfall - March 2023 Minecraft Legends - April 2023 Forza Motorsport - May 2023 Starfield - June 2023 Contraband - October 2023 Hellblade II - December 2023
I don't see the problem with Redfall, Starfield and Forza all releasing in the first half of 2023 since they all cater to different player bases, so I think there isn't much risk of cannibalising the player-base. One's a hardcore single-player RPG, one's a hardcore racing sim and the other's a single-player or multiplayer FPS depending on preference.
Date's probably very wrong, but will be curious to see. I guess there's also ARA: History Untold and the potential of some unnanounced project like the Stoic game (Project Belfry).
@Dezzy70 What are your sources for that statement?
I can understand having only announced Redfall, Starfield and Forza Motorsport as the big AAA games for the first half, but I don't see why we couldn't have Hellblade II, Contraband, Avowed etc. for the Second half of the year.
You could be right with what you're saying, I just want to know your reasoning or sources
It's a real shame that Remedy doesn't seem to be showing any signs of going back to the Campaign and improving it. A Remedy FPS campaign with a big budget could be incredible, but they didn't put their best foot forward here. Perhaps Smilegate simply didn't give them the funds necessary to make the campaign better...
Seeing this, I hope we see the following next-gen upgrades from Xbox:
Ryse: Son of Rome
Re-Core: Definitive Edition
Crackdown 3
Battletoads
Tell Me Why
Ori and the Blind Forest
Quantum Break
Killer Instinct
Basically, they should just enhance all the Xbox-published titles during the Xbox One era. Seems like a no-brainer to me, but I suppose a lot of these depend on the developers rather than Microsoft...

@HonestHick I think Xbox says they intend for Arkane Austin to fix Redfall, so I doubt they'll leave it in a poor state.

Re: Sony Won't Share Confidential PS6 Details With Activision If Xbox Deal Is Approved
So let me get this straight: Playstation doesn't want this activation to go through as they're concerned Microsoft would make Call of Duty exclusive.
But if the deal does go through AND Playstation doesn't provide Dev Kits, they're going to end up being console-exclusive to Xbox by default.
Unless I'm mistaken, this decision would mean the thing Playstation doesn't want to happen if the deal went through would happen, by their own hand.

March: Ghostwire Tokyo, Halo Infinite Season 3
April: Forza Motorsport
May: Redfall
June: Starfield
My guesses for the beyond that are Hellblade II, a Gears of War collection (akin to MCC) and Contraband for the second half of 2023. Think Avowed will be Q1 2024 so it doesn't launch too close to Starfield, and Fable, Everwild and State of Decay 3 will round out the rest of 2024.
Re: Xbox's Perfect Dark Reboot Going 'Extremely Well', According To Crystal Dynamics
@Spaceman-Spiff My thoughts are Hellblade II from the First-party, and Contraband from Avalanche Studios on the Third-party publishing side. Maybe Avowed Q1 2024?
Re: Saints Row's November Update Is 'A Beast', Contains Over 200 Fixes
@EliJapan "reviews will always say it's still carp"
Sounds like those are some fishy reviews, if you ask me...
Re: Multiple 'Age Of Empires' Titles Are Coming To Xbox Series X And S In 2023
@Grumblevolcano Apparently they're updating AOE: Definitive Edition to the same engine as AOE II: Definitive Edition, so I suspect we'll see that come to consoles after the engine upgrade.
Re: Turn 10 Wants To Know What Features You'd Like To See In Forza Motorsport 2023
@Dezzy70 Okay, wasn't sure if you were claiming it as fact, but if it's your own prediction fair enough.
My predictions for 2023 from Xbox are something along the lines of:
Redfall - March 2023
Minecraft Legends - April 2023
Forza Motorsport - May 2023
Starfield - June 2023
Contraband - October 2023
Hellblade II - December 2023
I don't see the problem with Redfall, Starfield and Forza all releasing in the first half of 2023 since they all cater to different player bases, so I think there isn't much risk of cannibalising the player-base. One's a hardcore single-player RPG, one's a hardcore racing sim and the other's a single-player or multiplayer FPS depending on preference.
Date's probably very wrong, but will be curious to see. I guess there's also ARA: History Untold and the potential of some unnanounced project like the Stoic game (Project Belfry).
Re: Turn 10 Wants To Know What Features You'd Like To See In Forza Motorsport 2023
Re: The 'Worst Xbox Game Of 2022' Is Slowly Starting To Make A Comeback
It's a real shame that Remedy doesn't seem to be showing any signs of going back to the Campaign and improving it. A Remedy FPS campaign with a big budget could be incredible, but they didn't put their best foot forward here. Perhaps Smilegate simply didn't give them the funds necessary to make the campaign better...
Re: Rumour: Xbox Is Talking To 'Major' Japanese Publishers About Acquisitions
@Kaloudz Honestly, I want Tango Gameworks to make a Halo Horror game based entirely on The Flood. Would be epic!
Re: Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Xbox Series X|S Version Coming In 2023
Seeing this, I hope we see the following next-gen upgrades from Xbox:
Basically, they should just enhance all the Xbox-published titles during the Xbox One era. Seems like a no-brainer to me, but I suppose a lot of these depend on the developers rather than Microsoft...
