The big news of this week from an Xbox perspective is that the first-party Xbox handheld rumoured for 2027 has reportedly been sidelined, with Microsoft said to be focused on supporting third-party handhelds for now.
Reacting to the news, former Xbox executive and Blizzard president Mike Ybarra suggested it was "100% the correct path" on social media today, advising that he never understood why a first-party Xbox handheld made any sense.
"If true, 100% the correct path in my opinion. So many devices out there and with SteamOS on 3rd party devices now, none of this made any sense to me other than a reaction to fill some void in a HW strategy (aka: PR play). Given the new Xbox focus (leaving this debate outside of this particular thread), HW makes no sense. Focus on great games and building communities within them."
As you can see, Ybarra is of the opinion that Xbox needs to "focus on great games and building communities within them" rather than making new hardware. In terms of the handheld space, it sounds like that's the plan for the time being - although Xbox has seemingly partnered with ASUS to release a third-party Xbox handheld later in 2025.
Ybarra isn't the only industry name with this opinion, with Windows Central's Jez Corden also penning a feature earlier today suggesting it's probably best to sideline the handheld for now. Jez mentions that the "threat" from SteamOS and its performance improvements over Windows should be a particularly big concern for Microsoft going forward.
"As much as it pains me to admit, Microsoft's decision to park the Xbox handheld (for now) makes total sense. Windows 11 usability and performance on handhelds needs all the help it can get, and SteamOS is a bigger threat."
Just to clarify, this news doesn't mean an Xbox handheld won't happen at some point in the future. The original report even mentioned that Xbox remains very interested in building such a device, despite it being sidelined at the moment.
Will it be in 2027 though? That seems unlikely unless plans change behind the scenes once again...
