Re: Microsoft Provides More Detail On Its New Xbox Game Pass Standard Tier

tho_mi

Not surprised at all. At the current price level this can't be sustainable for Microsoft (I know they claim it is, but in the end it heavily depends on different assumptions when it comes to accounting and "lost sales").

@themightyant, to be fair, it might just be careful wording. Could be the case that they just don't want people to know "every game will hit the service after six months", so they can announce it twice. Given how much games there are nowadays it's pretty easy to just wait a few months in most cases (plus, if you're patient and don't care about limited/collector's editions, you get most games pretty cheap after a while).

Re: Xbox: 'You Are Going To See More Of Our Games On More Platforms'

@Sifi and then again we have Hifi Rush, one of the very few great new IPs. There is a reason Phil and others are always vague, they want to have as much flexibility as possible. They opened Pandora's box and those discussions about games coming to PS5 will remain for the foreseeable future.

Re: Xbox Announces Three New Series X|S Consoles Launching In 2024

Guess that's the hardware they were announcing for later this year. Rather disappointing, now they will have five (?) different models. While I won't buy a PS5 anytime soon, having one SKU with an option to upgrade seems a smarter move (and less of a headache for everyone involved).

Re: Rumour: Xbox Planning To Bring More Games To PS5, Despite Some 'Unease' At Microsoft

tho_mi

The fact that Phil is pretty much the last person we hear about the future of XBox these days is rather telling (and imo definitely not a good sign for the future of the platform).

Of course it makes sense to bring the games to PS in the short-term, especially with XS being that far behind. But every game is already coming to PC day one and without any exclusives their platform will be left to die. Sony will be happy about the cut they get for every (XBox) game sold on PS.

Re: PS5 Survey Lists Top 10 'Most Wanted' Xbox Franchises On PlayStation

@Kaloudz, even if it’s just a handful, if it’s the “wrong handful” they may as well bring all of them over. Imo they have to keep their hands of pretty much all Xbox Game Studios games that have no “proper history” (looking at Minecraft eg) on other platforms. Something like Sea of Thieves is understandable, but if they bring one of the “big franchises” (Gears, Halo, Forza,…) over, you can reasonably expect all games to hit PS at some point.

Re: The FTC Is Concerned About Xbox's Recent Batch Of Employee Layoffs

If Microsoft were always planning to release Starfield etc on PS, they could or would have said so a long time ago and the whole saga around the merger might have been over much sooner.

But it would be funny if Microsoft went 3rd party publisher very soon, then many fans would prefer the merge to not have gone through and Sony would have never complained.

Re: Phil Spencer Addresses Xbox Speculation Ahead Of 'Business Update Event'

tho_mi

@themightyant, agreed. The main issue that I see is, once you start bringing some games over, where does it stop? Once you open that box, it's impossible to close it again. Porting games to Switch is different, they are not a "direct competitor" like Sony, so you reach people you otherwise might have never reached. But once you start bringing your biggest games to PS, there will always be rumours around every big exclusive that has not yet been announced for PS. Sony would be happy about this, as they get a cut.

Re: Phil Spencer Addresses Xbox Speculation Ahead Of 'Business Update Event'

@ZuneTattooGuy, once you stop the subscription you are left with nothing when it comes to GamePass. Plus, how many people buy games at full price? GamePass is great to get new games on day 1 (at least in theory day 1, seems like the latest trend is to offer upgrades for early access to make some money), but if you're patient you will almost always find huge discounts. Just not on day 1.

Re: Phil Spencer Addresses Xbox Speculation Ahead Of 'Business Update Event'

tho_mi

@themightyant, yeah, but my point was, they already have access to a huge install base, but that doesn't help if you're not able to get out games that are good enough.

Regarding Game Pass on PS5, why not try to pull as many people in your own ecosystem so you don't have to worry about whether a competitor allows your subscription service on their platform? My initial thought about the acquisitions was that this way they get content to draw people to their ecosystem, even if it takes time. This was never going to change things from one day to the next, but maybe just with the next gen of consoles. But nowadays you never know how much time companies "get" (from shareholders etc) to let things play out and not focus on short-term results.

Re: Starfield, Indiana Jones And Many Other 'Xbox Exclusives' Could Be Heading To PS5

tho_mi

@Kaloudz, while it's "just a few games", people have complained for years about missing exclusives on Xbox. While should they "immediately" give up on that now that they start having big exclusives?

When it comes to Starfield not moving enough consoles, it's important to keep in mind that everything from Microsoft launches on PC day one, so the same game will never have the same effect on Xbox as it would have on PS.

Re: Starfield, Indiana Jones And Many Other 'Xbox Exclusives' Could Be Heading To PS5

tho_mi

@Kaloudz, one thing people seem to be forgetting is the fact that the "store owners" get a cut of every game sold. If Microsoft started putting many games on PS now, they'd essentially give up on Xbox and by extension at some point also on their ecosystem to a certain degree. Every game sold via their store gives them a cut, while when they sell the game on Steam or PS, Steam and Sony get a cut. Short-term this would definitely increase their revenue, mid- to long-term? I'm not so sure (as their ecosystem might take a huge hit).

edit:
Imo it's super clear that Zenimax and AB acquisitions are not short-term plays. The most profitable way is to sell their games through their platform where they can keep all the money.

Re: Another Eight Games Will Leave Xbox Game Pass Soon (April 2023)

tho_mi

Would be great if the article could mention potential licensing issues. Wouldn't be the first game to be delisted and if it's a licensing issue, then Microsoft can't do anything about it.

If this is in fact true, then I hope the game will be on sale again before it gets delisted. Would be a bit annoying to delist it at full price while it seems to be on sale on a regular basis (almost always 75% off, according to Deku Deals). But we'll see.

Re: Another Seven Games Will Leave Xbox Game Pass Soon (March 31)

tho_mi

@Dezzy70, I'm sure they will after some time, but I feel (not actual proof) that 3rd party games that drop on day 1 at GamePass (and are marketed) usually stay longer than one year. E.g. The Gunk was released 1.5 years ago and it seems like it's not leaving anytime soon. But of course, it's just a feeling from my side (but imo it would make sense).
