@Decimateh I still have my physical version of WC2 from the 90s, but no way to actually play it. There's a website that emulates DOS games on it. Sometimes I drop by to play some WC and Carmen Sandiego
@themightyant On Xbox I don't have that comparison since the SS is my first. On PS I can say that I bought far more games on PS3 than PS4. PS5 is still quite recent, but it's on track to be on the a little lower than the PS4.
@NeoRatt You just proved my point. If defined terminology doesn't matter to someone, they'll just call what they wish. Now, I'll just play a cozy life sim called God of War Ragnarok
@themightyant I haven't bought as many as you and most I bought on Xbox Series were older and/or on sale. The only launch title I actually bought was Hogwarts Legacy. But in terms of numbers, we're the exception, not the rule. The average of games bought per system on any system is surprisingly low.
@NeoRatt Part of the problem, I see, as people not caring about accurate representation. Just like port, remaster and remake. Which according to some people even on this website would mean that the amount of remakes is a surprisingly low number.
Let's use your Perfect Dark example. We have a 1st party owned IP being mainly developed by a 1st party studio with the support (key work, support) from a 3rd party. That's a first party game which can have the added description of having external support.
Let's suppose that Toys for Bob is making Spyro 4. MS owned IP, external studio. Second party.
Things get "complicated" because people start ignoring meaning. At that point, why bother. Just call Black Ops VII a JRPG, Doom an Animal Crossing clone, and the new Perfect Dark a spiritual successor to Superman 64.
Let me ask you this... Is Bayonetta 1st party for Nintendo?
@SMJ Ninja Gainden Dragon Sword for the DS was published by Ubisoft in Europe. So I'd guess it's also a Ubisoft title... Ninja Gaiden is certainly getting around. We might own the IP as well and not even know it
@FraserG So I guess words don't mean anything anymore in this industry. Ports/remasters/remakes and now 1st/2nd/3rd party. Soon enough genres will mean nothing too. "So, this is a first person shooters?" "No, of course not. You play in first person and you shoot a lot, but we like to think of it as a traditional JRPG"
@trev666 and @Millionski I agree that at best it could be called second party
@NeoRatt I have. And since none of them are owned by MS, nor is the IP, they could have 50 studios working on it and it wouldn't change a thing.
@themightyant Spyro is a game none of my PS1-owning friends had. So I only played the remakes. I immediately fell in love. I wanted to try one of the DS ones people say it's actually ok, but the prices were too steep
@Cakefish If the next Xbox integrates Steam, Epic and GOG, I'll be a happy camper. I have a bunch of games (especially on GOG, thanks Amazon), but I don't like gaming on PC. So that would be a great reason to get the next hardware
It might eventually come to Prime Gaming. I'm acutally hopeful they continue their 1st party publishing give aways there. I had only one of the new Wolfenstein games and now I have all of them.
@themightyant I didn't quit, but I still consider Crash to be overrated. Crash hard is more akin to NES Ninja Gaiden hard than a game that's actually well designed with that in mind. Heck! A friend of mine had a PS1 and he'd say any Crash game was waaay better than Mario 64. Since playing Crash I've questioned his sanity. And Spyro is underrated and deserves a new game. Just throwing this out there
@Banjo- I hope they get the price right. I love handheld gaming (I still play on DS and 3DS) and depending on the library and price, portables from Xbox and PS sound quite interesting to me. But if the price is not right and I gotta pick one, that's gonna be tough
@BacklogBrad The big problem is that devs spend so much money making a game, they can't take as many risks as they used to. So games become more of the same, but prettier.
The leap for this gen was held back by the jump in resolution. It takes a lot more horsepower to make the same thing, but in 4k, especially 4k60. We won't have that jump for next gen. And I don't many devs will go crazy on 120fps. So there's great potential for a larger visual leap than this gen had. I just wish there was a significant leap in development and costs involved.
@themightyant I hadn't considered battery life. That's indeed a current impossibility. A breakthrough in this sector is sorely needed. It'd be a whole new tech race if we had affordable batteries that lasted a lot longer and I miss a cool tech race
@Kezelpaso I've given up talking about this to people online, because they'll call your opinion stupid while failing to present their own. I've recently tried for the first time on purexbox and the people who pretend to "know it all" vanished when they had to answer a few simple questions. Alas... I still blame Activision and the Crash trilogy for this mess
I see a hybrid/portable from Xbox and PS facing the same issues.
Scenario 1 - It's the same power level of the PS6/XboxSomething, so the price will be stupidly high, but it'll have tons of games.
Scenario 2 - It's as powerful as a PS5/SeriesX. It'll be more affordable, but it'll stop getting a steady release of games in 2 or 3 years.
The Switch works for Nintendo because of what it offers and the amount of games it gets for a lower price of hardware. I don't see either Xbox or PS being able to replicate that part.
"Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time would mark the series' first Xbox entry after almost three decades of waiting" It's already hard to accept 2012 was 13 years ago. There's no need to write in a way to make it sound like 30. It's the company (Level-5) that's had Xbox wait a long time.
On a brighter note, I'm really looking forward to this one and I'm happy all consoles are getting it. But I'll stick to the Switch for the portability in this case.
@xeofate To give you a counter point and the one time I was not happy with them on this matter. NES/SNES games on the 3DS. They could've used their account system to make sure people who already owned them on Wii U didn't have to buy them again, but they didn't
I actually went the other way around. I got BotW on Switch at launch and some time later I got it on the Wii U to play around a bit. I figured that physical version will have some historical value some day.
@xeofate GB on GBA, GBA on DS, DS on 3DS, GC on Wii, Wii on Wii U. That's not counting Virtual Console and NSO. So basically every gen where it was feasible to have BC, Nintendo did it.
@LogicStrikesAgain A "portable Series S" for $450 would be an interesting strike. But given that they've just pushed the cheapest Series S to $380, I don't think that's feasible
Waaaay too risky. I'll stick with my physical games being played on my Wii, some remasters like Prime, and NSO on Switch 2. I won't mess with Nintendo ninjas and Xbox ninjas at the same time. No, sir.
I've only played Chinatown Wars on the DS. Once my backlog gets smaller on Series S, I plan to give IV a go. Buy the time I get to VI it this might be on sale from $99.99 to $39.99
I'm glad it's the Digital Deluxe Edition. I almost bought it recently on sale. At this point, I'll stop buying older (which were or became) first party titles and continue hoping they come via Prime Gaming.
@Strohl So, for instance... Super Mario RPG and Link's Awakening on Switch are not remakes then. In your view, at least. Did I get it right? I could have list a bunch more, but thought better to stick to two to make sure I see your point clearly.
@Strohl Look, if you don't wanna answer me, just don't. There's no need for this sort of reply. But that's usually what I get on this topic, people can't answer the question, so they lash out. Good day to you
@Strohl They just remade the visuals, gameplay, animations, interface and introduced several QOL features. I'm sorry, but would it take for you to call it a remake?
"Built entirely from the ground-up in Unreal Engine 5" Looks like a remake, smells like a remake, plays like a remake... called a remaster. I'd rather they did what Capcom does and just use the name of the game again
@RegnumSolipsi A game can be remade twice. Just as it can for ports and remasters. Just take a look at what was done in the PS360 gen. Splinter Cell trilogy, PoP trilogy, Beyond Good and Evil, Jak trilogy, Sly trilogy, Ratchet and Clank trilogy. These were all remastered in HD. And a bunch more. PS4/One gen also got a bunch of remasters. I don't see Halo CE and especially Halo 2 An fitting that group. And we don't know exactly how this new project will work, but I see it this way: The 2 remakes we've got are faithful remakes. Visually remade from the ground up, improved sound and resolution. But still the same games at heart. Kinda like: Zelda OoT 3D, Link's Awakening and Super Mario RPG. What I believe they are working on is an ambicious remake. A full reconstruction of the original game. Mind you, I still consider it a remake, but that level of commitment I believe deserves it's own subcategory of reimagining. Like RE2, for instance. It's still RE2, but completely rebuilt from the ground up. And not many games fit this category. At least, that's how I see it. To further push my point. There's a lot of confusion as to what exactly this Oblivion version is. If they'd announced it simply as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and desbribed it as a faithful remake, do you think this level of confusion would have happened?
@RegnumSolipsi You kinda gave the answer there. And 10+ years ago, people could tell the difference. This whole confusion is a more recent thing. Heck... I've seen professional journalists in gaming say "I wonder if it's an HD port or a remaster". That hurt.
Let's get RE4 as an example since it's been all over the place. The game released on GameCube. Then, it was ported to the PS2. There was a visual downgrade and some content added, but in terms of visuals and gameplay, they were very similar or exactly the same. Then we had another port, this time for the Wii. Slightly better graphics and new motion controls, but, again, essentially the same game. Still a port since it was SD to SD. Now comes the fun part. RE4 was released on the Zeebo (may it rest in pieces), but that was a huge visual downgrade and there were several changes made to it. That was a demake. Not a good one, but it fits. Then we have RE4 for the PS360 which was a remaster. Same game, but went from SD to HD. Same thing with its other releases when the remaster version was ported to the PS4, XOne, PC and Switch. And we finally reach the RE4 remake. Brand new engine, graphics, etc. To sum up, at least my view: Parallel transition makes it a port. Exact same game but in higher definition (SD/HD or HD/4k), remaster. Game is visually remade, remake. Even if the gameplay is the same. Just to throw two other examples: Super Mario RPG and Zelda Link's Awakening. Aren't they both remakes on the Switch?
I hope I made sense. And as a farewell, Final Fantasy VII Remake... is not a remake, which is just hilarious
@Ricky-Spanish They didn't screw the games themselves (though I do believe them to be overhyped). But they remade the games and branded them as remasters. I can't recall a previous game to have done so.
Sadly we live in a world where port, remaster and remake get thrown around without consideration. Companies marketing also don't help in this matter. I can't say for sure, but as far as I know the first ones to screw this up were Activision with the Crash trilogy.
I guess we'll see how much of a difference it makes when you actually have games constantly releasing on the platform. I watched the whole Nintendo Direct and zero minutes were spent on watching tv shows and movies on the Switch 2. Should they have bundled the Welcome Tour? Sure. But if you read Reggie's book (a great read BTW), you'll see that he had to fight to have Wii Sports bundled with the Wii. Japan was against it (and there it wasn't bundled). Different leadership unfortunately means different piorities in this case.
One is a tablet and the other is a console. One is 0.88 pounds and the other is 4.25 pounds. The fact that the S2 can do 4k60 or even 1080p120 is quite impressive. The question is... will the Series S help the Switch 2 get more games or vice versa?
Avowed at 80 is criminal! I've been playing it slowly due to lack of time, but so far I'm really enjoying the story and characters. Only issue I have is the treasure maps don't appear correctly when I pick them up. Which is quite a minor thing.
I really wanna play this, but I get the feeling it'll get a Switch 2 version and longer RPGs I prefer to have the portability on my side. Between two jobs and two kids, portability is super helpful
It's interesting to me seeing people from developed countries talking about the cost of hardware and software. I wonder how many would still be gamers in a developing country. Or even worse, how many would have been gamers at all in decades past when you could easily pay $400+ for a $200 console and $120 for a $50 game. All that while making about 30% as much money and inflation issues being a constant in your life and not a post-pandemic / post-tafiff thing.
Anyway. I've got my S2+MKW on Amazon Spain and got DKB from another store for 50 euro.

Avowed at 80 is criminal! I've been playing it slowly due to lack of time, but so far I'm really enjoying the story and characters.
Only issue I have is the treasure maps don't appear correctly when I pick them up. Which is quite a minor thing.
Re: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - Length, Performance Modes & Other Xbox Details Revealed
I really wanna play this, but I get the feeling it'll get a Switch 2 version and longer RPGs I prefer to have the portability on my side. Between two jobs and two kids, portability is super helpful
Re: Former Xbox Exec Throws Shade At Switch 2, Says It's A 'Hard Pass'
It's interesting to me seeing people from developed countries talking about the cost of hardware and software. I wonder how many would still be gamers in a developing country. Or even worse, how many would have been gamers at all in decades past when you could easily pay $400+ for a $200 console and $120 for a $50 game. All that while making about 30% as much money and inflation issues being a constant in your life and not a post-pandemic / post-tafiff thing.
Anyway. I've got my S2+MKW on Amazon Spain and got DKB from another store for 50 euro.
