Over the last year, year and a half, Microsoft has certainly changed things up in terms of its Xbox strategy - mainly by focusing more on software and launching some of its biggest in-house games on other platforms. This took some time getting used to at the beginning, and even though things are much clearer now, some industry folks still think there's work to be done.

Mike Ybarra, the outspoken former Blizzard boss who also worked as a Microsoft exec back in the day, has taken to social media over the weekend to voice their opinion on the current state of Xbox. Ybarra says that it's "tough" to see Xbox "confused about who it is", and that the team should "pick its lane and stick to it".

Here's Ybarra's post in full:

"Tough to see Xbox confused about who it is and what it should be.

Some great people there still. They have to figure out what needs to change .... and fast. I'm a big fan and will always bleed green. Cheering the team on from the sidelines.

Pick your lane and stick to it."

Ybarra followed up these comments by saying that Xbox should fully commit to being a third-party publisher rather than acting as a hybrid-of-sorts; a sentiment similar to what a founding member of Team Green talked about recently as well. Xbox's ambiguity around its future as a platform holder and console maker is seemingly causing a bit of a stir in the industry at the moment.

When Microsoft first started to make these moves back in early 2024, we were similarly confused, but we reckon the situation has improved markedly since then. We now know nothing is off the table for multiplatform ports, we know the ROG Xbox Ally is waiting in the wings, and we know Microsoft has committed to hardware beyond that as well. Things aren't perfect with Xbox right now, but the future is looking bright for both 2026 and beyond.
