Forza On PS5 Has 'Easily' Made $100 Million For Xbox, Says Analyst

I was posting on push square about Sony having Astro bot on Xbox to make some more money and it would be a good fit.

The total self centred attitude over there about another Sony game being on another console.
It’s was really not great.

Any excuse on why it should not happen and it would be bad.

Sweet I guess a gamepass discount is on the way because of it??

@OldGamer999 I know Push Square is a PlayStation site but there as so many fan boys (ponies 🤣) over there that are only ever happy by the idea Microsoft/Xbox ‘loosing’ the none existent console war. TBH, and I know this may go down the wrong way, I don’t think some of the writers help 😉

But back to this article… this is great for Xbox Studios in general. More money made to allow MS to keep supporting Game Pass and future games.
It was strange at first but it is turning into a great business decision

@OldGamer999 AstroBot is a great game and for me the 2nd best game of last year after Balatro but it would not work on Xbox due to the controller.

I don't have an issue with making games on PS but as this proves they should not be doing them after just a few month. 1-2 years needs to be the norm.

The two things that strike me the most from this are:

Firstly, why on Earth would Microsoft not now have everything release day one on the PlayStation? Why wait to make a bucket load of money when you can have it straight away? Microsoft have seen where the real money is to be made, and will have undoubtedly seen how Game Pass eats massively into their sales both on the Xbox and on PC. Thus, rather than push people into buying a month here or there in order to play a game, sell it on the PlayStation, and make much more money that way. Going forward, expect all first-party games to be released on the PlayStation day one, and to see plenty of PlayStation logos on reveals at the forthcoming Xbox Showcase.

Secondly, anyone that honestly believes that Microsoft would use the revenue to prop up Game Pass is honestly deluding themselves. Why would any company take money from a successful part of their company, to support a part of their company that is less successful? Why would anyone do that? That's not how you do business. If Game Pass cannot stand on its own two feet (and I'm not saying that it cannot) then Microsoft will cease to support it. If you take profits from one part of your company to prop up part of your company that is not making profits, then you are making less profits in the round. Microsoft simply will not do that. Game Pass thrives or fails on its own merits. Can both Game Pass and game sales make profits? Yes, but you won't use one to support another...

@Ricky-Spanish Can I ask why you think this? Some of the levels are quite challenging, certainly not fit for kids.

Personally it was either my GOTY last year or runner up to IJ.

@FatalBubbles Just the look and vibe of the game like a cartoon character all cute I've no doubt some of the levels would be tough I'm not trying to put a negative spin on it in any way I'd put spyro or the crash games in the same bracket and I play those games but I'd still consider them kids games if you get what I mean??

Good for them! This is a great result for them and clearly a step in the right direction overall. Like I've said a hundred times, this is good for the fans, this is good for the studios, and this is good for the games.

Funny how the vague, misdirection metrics vanish into the woodwork when something actually sells. No “user engagement” or “…has reached x million players!” gibberish here. All of a sudden there’s nothing to hide—when something sells well.

@Coletrain Nothing PC hasn't been doing for ages. And PC is an Xbox according to Microsoft.

@themightyant i mostly agree with you. One thing to consider. Sony has a decent amount of games not making much profit. Sales are decently high but between the cut to Marvel, or the budget, they just don’t rake in profits, hence they go to PC for more access to sales. Astro Bot isn’t the game for Xbox as it does use the controllers features. But all of their live service game attempts should be on Xbox. Those do make sense. As for Xbox i would have liked to see them keep a few exclusive titles. But Doom and Elder Scrolls and Tony Hawk and COD, Diablo of course those titles should remain on all platforms. Kind of silly that so many thought MS would keep those to just Xbox and PC. But one thing is for sure, all 3rd party devs are putting their games on as many platforms as possible. Square finally said enough is enough, and many others are coming to PC day and date now. So it’s a fine line of keeping a couple games that are uniquely built for your hardware and making sure mass appeal games don’t miss a box for me. It’s a hard line to balance. As you said for Nintendo would many of us buy a Switch 2 if we could play their games on Xbox. Likely not. I bought the Switch 2 and it’s not the most comfortable design in the world. But i wanted to play some of their titles. Tho i am having a little early buyers remorse.

If xbox continues to demonstrate that this much money is being left on the table then sony and nintendo execs will have a harder time keeping their games exclusive to one platform. It's hard to imagine a future where playstation games are not releasing on Nintendo and maybe even xbox (if xbox goes the pc route then it might not be up to sony).

It's been a slow death for exclusives but it looks like it's just a matter of time.

@HonestHick I'd say eventually the switch 2 will have plenty of great games to play on the system to get rid of that remorse ha!
Are your interested in the fromsoftware game dropping on it soon sorry I forget it's name but that for me looks great from what they have shown so far!

Well anyone would interpret that as trolling with mentioning that game of all things, if you would have said Helldivers 2 then that's a reasonable conversation to have.

But you saying Astro Bot which you know Xbox players wouldn't really be interested in plus knowing that it uses every single ounce of the Dualsense's features. Is also Sony's new mascot, so obviously is not going to go anywhere else (not even PC).

Hopefully xbox users see some benefits in new games and experiences. Instead of higher console and gamepass prices.

The real money is to be made by being a platform holder. Apple, Google, Sony, Valve, Nintendo. Do zero work, have zero risk, take 30% of everything. Sadly Microsoft failed at this. They are transitioning into becoming a larger Activision. That was never where the "real money" was to be made. They have seen where the most most money they can make is, since they failed at growing their platform.

Just look at their mobile ambitions, which are very clearly not to keep only putting their games on ios and android stores, but to have their own store, and have been fighting for this since the King (with Activision Blizzard tossed in) purchase.

It’s was an example of a good one and one that I thought would do well on Xbox.

If it made 100 million. Then you minus 30% for Sony's cut.
You have to minus any advertising costs.
You have to minus the cost of the port studio.

Microsoft probably made 20-25 million. At the cost of their identity as a platform holder.

@Ricky-Spanish yeah it will have plenty of games in due time. I am not a Fromsoft guy. But the system will be fun. I just bought it with the Mario bundled in cause it was right there and i couldn’t say no. I could have waited but where’s the fun in that? Haha

@Coletrain oh yeah it will have some killer titles soon. I was there at the midnight launch and they had extras so i said why not. I am enjoying it. It’s big and the battery life isn’t wonderful but good enough. But yeah i can’t wait to see more games on it in time.

@themightyant thats awesome, glad you got one buddy. Oh i like it, i just didn’t need it at the midnight launch. But i was there with a friend and they had extras so i said why not. I love Nintendo games. I got the Mario kart bundle and happy to see Switch one titles running and looking better. Mario Odyssey looks way cleaner on it. That i do like.

@BacklogBrad the catch here is Sony is already making 30% profit of those sales with zero development or publishing costs. When the books are balanced they likely come out better than xbox as they have nothing to recoup.

I've had a PC controller with gyro for atleast 10 years.

@Weebleman sony profiting off of their ports doesn't impact anything from xboxs perspective. If it increases their bottom line then who cares? It's no different than giving Steam a cut to access those players.

Spiderman for example, could easily be profitable on an xbox port and ultra profitable on switch. Who cares if xbox and Nintendo get a smaller percentage of the $70 per copy?

ChatGPT is estimating that porting a AAA game to a different console costs 500k-2m. Xbox made out great on forza.

@BacklogBrad Im not saying they didn't, im just saying that they probably made less than Sony as that port cost is on top of the development and publishing costs as well. Which are a lot more than the porting costs.

Sony did not make more money on this port than Xbox. It's not even close. Development cost would be the port cost in this case because they already had a completed game to port.

But either way it's not really relevant to the point that xbox is demostrating that multiplatform is unlocking a huge revenue source.

Thats great and buys GP model a decade of time until xcloud comes into full force.

I only hope either next xbox sells enough to keep 3rd party devs interested or MS figures out the PC-xbox hybrid so sales dont matter anymore

@themightyant you ain’t kidding they really do have the magic that very few if any have. Switch 2 will have some killer titles on it. I watched the Donkey Kong trailer on the switch screen and was like wow for a launch title this is looking good. In year 2-3 we should see some killer stuff from Nintendo as they get more and more out of the chip. I have said this for years and it will never happen but if we ever had a Switch that was as powerful as next gen, i would buy that console only and call it a day. But with the form factory and battery it just won’t happen but the switch to me is the perfect setup if power didn’t have to be as restricted. So in that way it’s so close to my favorite console.

These profits just don’t seem that much considering it is basically killing the Xbox system in the process.

@OldGamer999 for profit companies don’t have to share their IPs. As from Sony and nintendos perspective they want people using their mediums. Microsoft has decided to adapt as post Xbox one they haven’t been doing well hardware wise outside of the anglosphere. Had they been number one worldwide since Xbox one, subsidized gamepass wouldn’t be as it is today. It would be Sony that would have to innovate. I don’t understand this modern mindset of sharing is caring. Not how businesses work.

@themightyant Yeah same here, I own all 3 consoles and wouldn’t want just a Switch. For Switch 1 i only bought Nintendo exclusives. For the Switch 2 i could see me trying some other games that run just as well on it. Tho that won’t be to many. I am the same way with my PS consoles. I only buy them for a handful of exclusives i want to play. As i don’t care for Sony controllers all that much. They are ok, just not my favorite layout and comfort. Xbox has been my main platform for decades cause i love the controller. I’ve toyed with the idea of doing PC next and just doing PC and Switch. But i am not a PC guy. I have used Apple computers for 16 years now. So the troubleshooting and PC maintenance is not something i am well versed in. But if the next Xbox is a PC/Console hybrid than i am all for that. That would be. The sweet spot for me or if on PS6 Sony has a more comfortable controller, which i doubt as they will likely never get rid of the inline sticks. Which isn’t even the only thing i think they need to do for me to like it. They would also have to give up on the 1% used touch pad as that would reduce the size and wasted space on the controller. Time will tell but i am starting to really love the switch 2 after playing with it more. Now i can’t wait for today’s Xbox show. Should be really good. Hope there is a few surprises we didn’t see coming. I wish they would mention the next Xbox console. But i know it’s to early and unlikely to be mentioned.

Microsoft is not sharing a single IP with anyone. They still own all of the IP. They are just selling it in more places. It makes no business sense not to to sell the most units of game as possibly can be sold. Exclusives don't increase your game sales, they may increase hardware sales, but not the units sold of games. You increase game sales by selling your games to more people.

It is Sony and Nintendo shareholders that are losing. Because they often miss out in both PC and XB game revenues for their games. One day they will look at how much XB is making by selling their games on all platforms and they will ask why aren't we making that much too?
