What Is The Name Of The Next Xbox Console?

There is no official name for the next-gen Xbox console as things stand. These kinds of details are usually revealed much closer to launch, so we wouldn't expect to learn of a name until perhaps around a year prior to its release.

You may have seen something floating around suggesting "Xbox Prime" is the name of the new Xbox console, but this is just an unverified rumour - and it could even be referring to a codename rather than an actual, final name.

What Has Xbox Said About A New Console So Far?

On June 17th of 2025, Xbox announced its next-gen console strategy in partnership with AMD, highlighting a next-generation hardware lineup that will include consoles, PC, handheld, cloud and accessories.

As part of this, it was mentioned that the next Xbox console(s) will deliver "the next generation of graphics innovation" featuring "a deeper level of visual quality" along with "immersive gameplay and player experiences enhanced with the power of AI". Backwards compatibility was confirmed for the next Xbox console in the process as well.

"We’ve established a strategic, multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including our next-generation Xbox consoles. Together, we’re delivering deeper visual quality, immersive gameplay, and AI-powered experiences - grounded in a platform designed for players, not tied to a single store or device, and fully compatible with your existing Xbox game library."

Xbox's Jason Ronald also talked about some core aims for the console in an Xbox podcast episode:

"So together with AMD, we're designing dedicated silicon and hardware to enable the next generation of gaming experiences, and so that means we're investing deeply in the next generation of rendering technologies, such as neural rendering, which will bring a new level of fidelity to the quality of the games that you're having, and it's really about deepening the immersion between you and the gameplay experience that you have. We're also investing in dedicated silicon to enable the next generation of AI capabilities that will be transformative in how you actually experience your gameplay and also provides a new surface that developers can actually take advantage of and deliver new kinds of experiences that they've never been able to deliver before."

Sarah Bond then advised to Mashable in October 2025 that the console is going to be a "very premium, very high-end curated experience" and that it'll be informed by the ROG Xbox Ally handheld to a degree.

"I can tell you you’re right, that the next-gen console is going to be a very premium, very high-end curated experience. You’re starting to see some of the thinking that we have in this handheld, but I don’t want to give it all away."

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also told TBPN in October 2025 how console and PC are similar in many ways:

"We want to do innovative work on the system side, on both console and PC. It's kind of funny that people think of console and PC as two different things. We built the console, because we wanted to build a better PC, which could then perform for gaming. I kind of want to revisit some of that conventional wisdom. At the end of the day, console has an experience that is unparalleled. It delivers performance that is unparalleled, that pushes, I think, the system forward."

Before all of this, the most exciting thing we'd heard from Microsoft about the next Xbox console was that the company was "focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation" with its future hardware.

"We're also invested in the next generation roadmap. And what we're really focused on there is delivering the largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation, which makes it better for players and better for creators and the visions that they're building."

Back in August of 2024, Xbox was notably hiring engineers to "define the future of graphics and game development", which could be related to the next console.

Xbox also suffered a major leak a while ago which referenced plans for some kind of "hybrid" console that would "leverage the combined power of the client and cloud to deliver deeper immersion and entirely new classes of game experiences". However, this leak turned out to be pretty old, and many of the other leaked plans didn't actually come to fruition as scheduled, so who knows if this hybrid idea will make it to market.

On April 4th, 2025, an exclusive look at a "secret Xbox lab" revealed where Xbox is currently developing next-gen hardware, which is expected to include the next Xbox console and potentially a next-gen Xbox handheld in the future. This was shown off again in a separate video in October 2025.

Are There Any Rumours About The Next Xbox Console?

Xbox mentioned in its next-gen console strategy reveal with AMD that the future of Xbox hardware would "deliver you an Xbox experience not locked to a single store, or tied to one device." It was also noted how Team Xbox is working with the Windows team to try and make Windows the number one gaming platform in the world.

Nothing was verbalised about Windows specifically being part of Xbox's console strategy, although a big ongoing rumour is that the next Xbox console will be "closer to Windows than ever before". We've been hearing variations of this for some time now, and it's sounding pretty accurate based on what Microsoft has said so far.

The most recent report about this comes from Windows Central in October 2025, which suggested that the next Xbox console will feel like a traditional console but also feature the ability to exit out to Windows and access different storefronts and games. It's also been suggested that it won't feature any paywalls for online multiplayer.

Most of the other rumours we've seen are now outdated following Xbox's next-gen unveiling on June 17th.

That said, there has been a rumour that the console might even be cancelled, but Microsoft was quick to shut that down, stating that the company is "actively investing in our future first-party consoles and devices".

An Xbox Magnus "leak" has attracted a lot of attention as well, with YouTuber Moore's Law Is Dead suggesting that the next console will be powerful, very expensive and potentially a hybrid console/PC device as previously rumoured.

Is Steam Coming To The Next Xbox Console?

It's been speculated that Steam could be part of the new Xbox console when it seemingly launches in 2027. This is because the next console is expected to be more "PC-like" than anything we've seen before from Xbox.

In fact, a report in May 2025 from Windows Central mentioned that Xbox had been "in talks" with PC storefront owners including Valve (the company behind Steam), but it wasn't known whether this had materialised into anything.

There's certainly a lot of hope for Steam to be on the next Xbox console, but nothing confirmed yet. As mentioned in the previous section, even Team Xbox seems to have alluded to the idea of multiple storefronts on console as a possibility, and a report in October 2025 suggested that multiple storefronts could be accessible on the system.

Is The New Xbox Console Coming Out In 2027?

It's been reported by Windows Central's Jez Corden that the new Xbox console has a strong chance of releasing in 2027. There's the possibility it could arrive earlier or later, but this seems the most likely prediction as things stand.

For what it's worth, the big Xbox leak that took place a couple of years ago mentioned that a next-gen Xbox console would launch in 2028 at the earliest, but again, that leak was very old and it's possible that plans have now changed.

What Kind Of Price Will The Next Xbox Console Be?

It's really too early to know what price the next Xbox console will be, but based on the Xbox Series X and how the PS5 Pro has been priced, don't be surprised if it's somewhere around $600 or higher at launch. With the Nintendo Switch 2 launching at $500 (with Mario Kart World thrown in), it's hard to see the next Xbox console being any less, and keep in mind that in September 2025, Xbox raised the base price of the Series X to a whopping $649.

Obviously, we don't know whether the Xbox Series S will get a successor as well, in which case there could be a cheaper variant of the next Xbox console on the market.

In addition, Xbox boss Phil Spencer did mention recently that Microsoft wouldn't grow the market by building $1000 consoles, so it seems there's a desire to fall below that mark. How low will it be though? That's the big question...

So, there you go! Hopefully this has been a useful guide to get you up to speed on Microsoft's plans for next Xbox console, and as mentioned, we'll be updating it on a regular basis when any major information is revealed.
