Next Xbox Console: Everything We Know So Far About Microsoft's Next-Gen System

With the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S generation now having spanned multiple years, it's no surprise that we're looking ahead to what the next Xbox console will deliver for us, which is expected to arrive in the not too distant future.

In this all-in-one guide, you'll find everything we know so far about the next planned Xbox console, including some teasers that come directly from Team Xbox itself! Obviously we're expecting a lot more information to trickle out over time as well, so we'll keep this guide updated regularly with all the latest news and rumours as they come in.

Here's everything we know so far about the next Xbox console after the Series X (and S):

Is Project Helix The Name Of The Next-Gen Xbox Console?

Xbox has officially announced that "Project Helix" is the codename of the next Xbox console. It will get renamed nearer to release though, similar to what happened with Project Scarlett and Lockhart, which were the codenames for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S before they were revealed.

Until the time comes, you can expect everyone on the likes of social media, YouTube and in news articles to refer to the next-gen Xbox console as Project Helix. It's not the worst codename we've ever heard!

What Has Xbox Said About The New Console So Far?

When Asha Sharma took over as Xbox boss in early 2026, one of her first major announcements was that of Project Helix, confirming that the next-gen Xbox console would "lead in performance" and support both Xbox and PC games.

"Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console. Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games."

Sharma's March 2026 quote is the most recent official information we have on the console, but if we go back to June 2025, that's when Xbox first announced its next-gen console strategy in partnership with AMD, highlighting a next-generation hardware lineup that would include consoles, PC, handheld, cloud and accessories.

As part of this, it was mentioned that the next Xbox console(s) would deliver "the next generation of graphics innovation" featuring "a deeper level of visual quality" along with "immersive gameplay and player experiences enhanced with the power of AI". Backwards compatibility was confirmed for the next Xbox console in the process as well.

"We’ve established a strategic, multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including our next-generation Xbox consoles. Together, we’re delivering deeper visual quality, immersive gameplay, and AI-powered experiences - grounded in a platform designed for players, not tied to a single store or device, and fully compatible with your existing Xbox game library."

Xbox's Jason Ronald also talked about some core aims for the console in an August 2025 Xbox podcast episode:

"So together with AMD, we're designing dedicated silicon and hardware to enable the next generation of gaming experiences, and so that means we're investing deeply in the next generation of rendering technologies, such as neural rendering, which will bring a new level of fidelity to the quality of the games that you're having, and it's really about deepening the immersion between you and the gameplay experience that you have. We're also investing in dedicated silicon to enable the next generation of AI capabilities that will be transformative in how you actually experience your gameplay and also provides a new surface that developers can actually take advantage of and deliver new kinds of experiences that they've never been able to deliver before."

Former Xbox president Sarah Bond later advised to Mashable in October 2025 that the console would be a "very premium, very high-end curated experience" and that it'd be informed by the ROG Xbox Ally handheld to a degree.

"I can tell you you’re right, that the next-gen console is going to be a very premium, very high-end curated experience. You’re starting to see some of the thinking that we have in this handheld, but I don’t want to give it all away."

Are There Any Rumours About The Next Xbox Console?

There have been loads and loads of rumours about the next Xbox console, with many of them centring around how it will support both console and PC games. This has since been confirmed by Xbox as part of the Project Helix reveal.

Many unknowns still remain about exactly how the PC integration will work, however, with the most recent rumour on this suggesting that Project Helix will be "the most open Xbox ever" and have support for multiple storefronts, the option to exit out to Windows, and theoretically the ability to access other programs like Adobe Premiere Pro on it too.

It's also worth mentioning that a Windows Central rumour from October 2025 suggested the paywall for online multiplayer could be removed entirely on the next Xbox console, which we certainly hope comes to fruition!

"Right now, I'm told the current plan is for the next Xbox specifically to have no paywall for multiplayer."

We expect the rumour mill to keep churning out new details in Project Helix's road to release.

Is Steam Coming To The Next Xbox Console?

It's believed that Steam will indeed be part of the next Xbox console. With Xbox officially confirming that Project Helix will support PC games, and the ROG Xbox Ally handheld already containing Steam integration by default, all the stars seem to be aligning when it comes to bringing Steam games to console for the first time ever.

In fact, Epic Games — owner of another very popular PC storefront called the Epic Games Store — officially indicated an interest in being part of the next Xbox console before it was revealed to be getting PC support. If Epic Games is going to have a presence on Project Helix, we'd be shocked if Steam wasn't accessible on there as well.

The only thing that could put a spanner in the works is that Steam has its own console-like PC called the Steam Machine that's set to release in 2026, so that'll be in direct competition with Xbox's Project Helix.

Stay tuned — we'll let you know if and when Xbox officially confirms Steam integration.

When Will The Next Xbox Console Release?

There's obviously a lot of interest in when Project Helix will officially release, but nothing has been said by Xbox thus far. In fact, it sounds like even Microsoft isn't sure on a release date (or year) for the next Xbox console as things stand.

A Windows Central report from February 2026 mentioned how "so much of [the release date] hinges on improvements to Windows 11 and other factors", and therefore the company hasn't set a "hard launch window" just yet.

Nevertheless, AMD has specifically stated that they're ready to support a 2027 release date for the next Xbox console. That doesn't necessarily mean Microsoft will be ready in 2027, but AMD's part in the process seemingly will be.

"From a product standpoint, Valve is on track to begin shipping its AMD-powered steam machine early this year. And development of Microsoft's next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027."

What Kind Of Price Will The Next Xbox Console Be?

It's still too early to know what price the next Xbox console will be, but based on the fact that it will support both console and PC games, we're expecting it to be expensive — potentially the most expensive Xbox console of all time.

Keep in mind that in September 2025, Xbox raised the base price of the Series X to a whopping $649, and it's hard to see the next Xbox console being any less than that. Obviously, we don't know whether the Xbox Series S will get a successor as well, in which case there could be a cheaper variant of the next Xbox console on the market.

In addition, former Xbox boss Phil Spencer did mention that Microsoft wouldn't grow the market by building $1000 consoles, so it seems there's a desire to fall below that mark. How low will it be though? That's the big question...

So, there you go! Hopefully this has been a useful guide to get you up to speed on Microsoft's plans for next Xbox console, and as mentioned, we'll continue updating it on a regular basis when any major information is revealed.
