I've never understood the use case for handheld gaming. You're either at home, or there's a specific reason why you're not at home, and so you can't play games. I can't play a video game while I'm driving, or shopping, or working, or exercising, or any of the other reasons why I leave the house.
Yes I guess some people regularly spend hours on public transport, but surely that isn't enough people to sustain an actual product. And anyway, who wants to ruin their experience by playing on a small screen in a noisy environment with uncomfortable controls and no elbow room? Have some respect for the game you're playing!
Anyway whatever, my position in this comment is deliberately a bit ridiculous but I'm just trying to say no I don't want it.
Look at how excited people are about Astro Bot. Microsoft owns Spyro and Banjo-Kazooie. If they haven't greenlit new entries in those franchises I don't know what they are thinking.
The best thing about Game Pass is that with a console-only or PC-only subscription, you can still play any Xbox Play Anywhere games across both console and PC. Most games seem to be Xbox Play Anywhere these days. I do just fine across PC and console with a single PC Game Pass subscription (I don't care about online multiplayer). I hope they never take that away.
You're very much in the mood to play Forza Horizon 4 following the recent news? I think you might be wired backwards. I'm very much in the mood to never play another Forza Horizon game. I'm not interested in anything temporary. I'm happy I didn't really enjoy that one because imagine if I had - now I'd be losing it. Unacceptable. Imagine if, for example, Ocarina of Time was erased from existence one day. No thank you. I'm going to do my best to never play a game that's not going to be available at the end of time.
I think the writing's on the wall for physical games, which sucks. Not because I like discs, but because I don't like monopolies. With a disc console there are so many options for where to get games. You can shop around brick and mortar stores, order online, parallel imports, pawn shops, eBay etc., you used to even be able to rent them, you can borrow from a friend, and when you're done with a game you can sell it (don't do that if you borrowed it though). Or you can buy a digital copy from the platform holder (usually the most expensive option). With a discless console, that's your only option. It's not just digital-only, it's buy-from-Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo only. If a game costs too much the only options a gamer has are to pay too much, don't play the game, or acquire it without paying (if that's even possible). None of those are good options.
I've never played COD and I don't imagine I'm going to start now, but ew, no this game should not support Xbox One. This is going to be a 10.5 year old game, with some little graphics improvements on newer devices. If I wanted to play a game that old I'd play one of the million existing COD games. People talk about the series S holding back the series X but the One still holding back everything after 3.5 years is ridiculous.
Huh, I don't know anything about Still Wakes the Deep but it's a name I've heard. I thought it had been out for years and I've scrolled past it many times on Game Pass/PS Plus. I guess that's what you get with such a nondistinct name.
I just can't believe that they would close the studio that made Hi-Fi RUSH, but keep the studios that made Halo Infinite and Starfield. Hi-Fi RUSH is, for me at least, the only Xbox game worth a damn in the last few years. If they closed everything except Tango Gameworks and Ninja Theory it would make more sense.
Forza Horizon 5 and Fight Simulator are both incredible tech demos, but not really video games. I can't think of any other titles. Oh, Redfall.
I believe it will always be a waste of time until performance is at the point where more FPS wouldn't be noticeable. I don't know what that number is but I suspect it's significantly higher than 1000. A good few generations of display technology to go yet.
It's OK. 100% forgettable. It's not really a full shooter like Halo or Doom or something, but it also isn't really much else either. I played it honestly because the box art looked cool but that was the best thing about it. It's not bad. Just, might as well play something else instead.
This is funny. It's not optional. If they release Xbox games on other platforms, then Xbox exits the hardware market, whether Microsoft wants to or not. Nobody will buy an Xbox if you can play the same games and more on PlayStation. What Microsoft needs to realise is that the only thing that matters is games. Forget about all this "strategy", "ecosystem" stuff and just make great games. I'm waiting with my Series X for when they decide to make their first great game.
I'm not keen on this, because all I want is great games, and having three quality competitive console platforms is a better way to achieve that than two. Xbox has been struggling to justify its existence for over a decade now, and it has hurt gaming. Imagine if we had Zelda, God of War, and something else. Mario, Spider-Man, and something else. We're in a two horse race and I really want it to be three. Xbox has had some minor successes but has never smashed it out the park like Sony and Nintendo have. Just when it looks like they could be getting some momentum, they want to throw away the hardware business? What they need to do is redesign the controller so it doesn't suck to hold compared to the PS5 controller (at least the sticks are in the right place though), whip all their new acquisitions until they actually make some games, make Banjo-Threeie (buy Playtonic perhaps), and double down on exclusives. Quick resume is a game changer, and Xbox's HDMI-CEC implementation is way better than PS5's. And the Series X is easily the best-looking console ever (call me an IKEA fan). Their platform has a lot going for it! The only thing is missing is games, and it's just frustrating that they would give up now.
Reading the conversation above... so is there no 120 FPS option on Series X, even at 1080p? That's not great. I note that both PS5 and XSX proudly state 8K and 120 FPS on their retail packaging. It might be unreasonable to expect a game to hit both at the same time, but it's entirely reasonable to expect most first-party games to offer an 8K mode and a 120 FPS mode based on that marketing.
Of course, the consoles don't actually support 8K at all and certainly no games do. Presumably someone is suing Microsoft and Sony for those lies?
120 FPS is a different story. For a first-party racing game, where things move fast and things want to be smooth, there's no excuse for not sacrificing whatever it takes in the resolution/quality department to get a 120 FPS mode working if the hardware can physically support it.
According to my calculations that's less than one sixth of 1080p on Series S. How any developer can think that's acceptable I have no idea. It's embarrassing to even exist in the era of "8K" gaming machines when game developers are so greedy for graphical features at the expensive of resolution and frame rate that native 1080p60 isn't even guaranteed.
Please all game developers: native 4K120 is absolutely non-negotiable for all games. I don't care if you have to use GameCube-level lighting and polygon counts. Get the baseline working first, then you can see how much headroom you have for fancy shaders or whatever.
I subscribe for 30 days whenever I feel like it (subscribing long term would be a bad idea because I also have a PS5 and a Switch, which need some attention, and frankly deserve it a lot more than my Xbox does), so I don't even really remember how much it costs. Apparently it's changing from NZ$12.95 to NZ$13.95. Eh, I thought it was already that.
It's impossible to tell who on the team is good at their job and who is bad at their job from the outside. But you can't blame any of the individual employees anyway. Even the ones who suck, because maybe they already know they suck, and they still got paid. Well done! If you're a terrible programmer/artist/whatever, and you work at Arkane, and you got paid to do terrible work on this game, good on you for getting yours! If you worked overtime and busted your ass for your employer for nothing in return because of "passion", then you're an idiot. If you're highly skilled but you just got saddled with a bad project due to no fault of your own, no problem, because you still got paid right and that's why we work. Ultimately even if a company has bad workers you blame the company, not the workers. They hired them and kept them.
@GuyinPA75 I can confirm that my eyes bleed and my skull explodes every time I have to watch a wide panning shot in a movie theater, where objects on the screen move like a meter from one frame to the next and everything is impossible to track. I can't understand why they keep putting those shots in movies - does nobody do a test watch?
Eh, I've only heard of one of them (Redfall), and it doesn't interest me at all. I mean if they wanted to interest anybody surely they would have given it some sort of name.
What I want to know is when is Microsoft's acquisition spree going to start bearing fruit? It's been years and years. If Starfield ends up being meh then man. It's sad that each platform only has about one big game per year, but that's every platform except Xbox because there's been straight up zero for as long as can remember.
Eh, one game I know I don't care about and five I've never heard of. I sub on and off month to month and this isn't enough to get me to sub this month.
Ehhhh I've never played any Skate games (I just kinda missed that era of gaming, though I did play the hell out of various THPS games) and it looks like that's going to continue.
What I have found to be true is if I don't have to give anything in order the play the game, then I'm probably not going to get anything out of the experience in return.
