Re: 343 Responds To Rumours About The Studio Outsourcing Halo Development

Three comments in and all of us are on the same page? Neat.

Having not grown up with Halo, and only getting into the series about half a year before Infinite released, and as such not having quite an emotional connection to the Bungie games as some, I feel pretty strongly that for as much as Halo Infinite has good gameplay, in trying to appeal to the “twitch shooter” market (CoD, Apex, Destiny), 343i seems to have lost some indescribable thing that made the original trilogy great.

Re: Talking Point: Is There A Place For 'Snap Mode' On Xbox In 2024?

AccessibleDaydream

@eastephens I will forever hold that “ahead of its time” was the whole story back during the original Xbox One reveal. For better or worse, always-online, check-ins, and digital-first gaming are all commonplace in the industry now. Even things like multitasking with Snap, watching TV on your game console, and the voice-activated features of Kinect, are alive and well in modern gaming, with several commenters saying they use their phones for additional things while gaming, streaming services playing a significant role in Xbox’s platform (and PlayStation’s, too), and the presence of voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Gemini, etc.) in our lives today. The Xbox One effectively set the standard for modern gaming, but it was definitely ahead of its time. About the only thing we don’t have today from that presentation is the one thing that could actually significantly benefit us as gamers: the ability to sell, share, and trade-in digital games.

” That mode is called Big Team Battle: Sentry Defense, which is playable across six maps (Fragmentation, Highpower, Deadlock, Oasis, Scarr and Command).”

It’s unfortunately very telling as to the state of Halo Infinite that there’s no more than six BTB maps, three of which are from launch in November 2021, one of which is from March of 2023, another of which is from June 2023, and the last of which is apparently actual new content.

Re: 343 Adds 'COD Zombies Mode' Into Matchmaking On Halo Infinite

I understand that what I’m about to say is probably going to seem pedantic, but I feel it’s important to be said anyway: using terms like “CoD”, “343”, or “SSBM” (in the case of the XDefiant article) can be very alienating. Yes, the author briefly mentions the full name of what’s being referred to, and yes, as gamers, we generally know what all of these terms mean. However, someone just coming off of Google, for instance, may not understand what any of those terms mean, and in all fairness it’s not always incredibly obvious, especially without an explanation of what they actually mean. It feels more like the kind of move a niche gaming website would make, not one you’d expect from a widely-known gaming media company.

Never mind any of that, “343” is not the name of the studio. The name of the studio is “343 Industries”, or “343i” for short. Yes, it’s a tiny difference in the end, but it gets back to the point I made above.

Re: Microsoft CEO Comments On Xbox's New PlayStation Store Success

Will this newfound success lead to more Xbox releases on Sony's storefront?

The appropriate word, for some reason, feels like capituation. This will certainly be interesting...

@CaptainCluck The comparison to Windows Phone checks out, mostly because I really liked Windows Phone. I also liked Windows 8's Metro UI, though, too, so maybe I shouldn't get involved with beloved things. XD

Re: Microsoft Rewards Fans Are Preparing For A New Era On Xbox This Week

Unfortunately with the change in program, I can’t redeem points anymore. In order to redeem points, I need to add a phone number to my Microsoft account, but the account dashboard won’t let me link my phone number, because it says it’s already attached to a Microsoft account. The account in question is one that I haven’t had access to for nearly a decade and have long since forgotten any information for.

Re: The Fallout TV Show Debuts Today, And It's Getting Very Impressive Reviews So Far

@RetroMan71 There's too many services now.

Yes, there was market consolidation when everything was on Netflix and Hulu. However, with everything spread across many services, there is still market consolidation (because the streaming services that matter are essentially just Hulu, in many pieces, that costs much more) as well as the wonderful addition of headache-inducing anti-consumer splits that reduce the end-user to a mere statistic.
