Update #3 []: After roughly a 20 hour downtime, Xbox says "good news" everything is back up and running. According to official support (I've checked and it all looks good on my end) the issues should now be resolved. The fix addresses problems affecting game launches, sign ins, and purchases.
Here's the official quote from Xbox Support on Twitter/X:
"Good news — the earlier Xbox issue should now be mitigated. You should once again be able to launch games, sign in, and complete purchases. Thanks for sticking with us through a long one. Let us know if anything still looks off: http://support.xbox.com"
Is everything working for you? Tell us in the comments!
Update #2 []:
Oh dear, It's getting worse. The Xbox Status page has updated, in addition to issues with digital games, now it seems there's a major outage with disc-based games and backward compatibility too!
"You may have problems playing disc-based games right now."

Update #1 []: Xbox Status page has now updated to confirm that, as of 14:57:33 BST, 'Games & Gaming' is also suffering a major outage. Issue details state: "You may have problems playing your digital games right now."
Original Story: Last week, Xbox suffered an untimely server outage preventing players from accessing Halo: Campaign Evolved Early Access on the very same day it launched. Not great from Team Green, and to make matters worse, it looks like servers are playing up once again.
You're not alone, Xbox Support confirms the outage, this time preventing players from signing into accounts, games not showing up in libraries, and issues launching games.
From my end, everything seems to be in working order, but according to Xbox's Status page, Account & Profile, Store & Subscriptions, and Apps & Mobile all appear to have a big red "Major Outage" symbol next to them.

Xbox engineers are working to fix the issues, but the outage does raise wider concerns around digital ownership. If server problems can suddenly prevent players from accessing their games, are we simply better off holding onto physical discs after all?
I'll continue to keep my eye on the situation, in the meantime, do let me know how you're getting on in your country in the comments section below.

Xbox seen the PSN outage a couple days ago and didn't want to be left out I guess. I noticed issues last night but it didn't affect my connection to ffxiv. This morning all my gamepass games are showing the little warning symbol, trying to say I don't own / have access to them.
My daughter was playing fine on games this morning I only noticed the notification when switching the console off there was outages.
Hopefully it's sorted by the time I'm on later I just started kingdom come deliverance 2 and really want to get stuck into it tonight!
It's moments like these that I get really frustrated with not being able to access games I own. I get gamepass may have restrictions but games I've literally paid for and that are offline? Seems a bit unfair to me 🤷♂️
With this and PSN was down welcome your adorably all-digital future.
All the dumb fanboys using the psn outage last week in gonna need yall to eat a big plate of crow.
And people wonder why the all-digital future isn’t all that appealing for some things.
All digital problems.. I can still play my disca
@Fishmasterflex96 Who said that?
The recently added profile and system indicator on the top right is working beautifully.
Saw the exclamation mark and a simple click on it told me what was up.
I’m unaffected. Just played half an hour of Peggle 2.
No crow being eaten here; this outage is a “limited outage” hence nowhere near as bad the psn outage over the weekend.
Welcome to the all-digital future indeed where on Xbox it’s constantly updating and with more limited outages than others
The solution is obvious - we just need more stability patches! This has been working great for Nintendo systems over the years. ^_^
@zeikerd It's in his mind dude he said something similar to this recently aswell.
If you're console is set as your home console then you can play downloaded games you own offline so your games will still be accessible.
@MrStark Would you have that same peppy answer if you were affected by the outage? Would you have that same peppy answer if someone hijacked your account and you lost access to every single one of your digital purchases? Just curious. Can’t tell if you’re that shortsighted or if you’re just one of those people who doesn’t care about the turmoil of others as long as it isn’t happening to them.
@MrStark I dream that one day I will be gifted with your wonderful optimism and positive outlook on things. It's a genuine breath of fresh air when you reassure us all that Xbox is doing just great! 😆
@Balaam_ He is happy it's a partial outage whats with the rage my dude sounds like a nerve was hit it's nobody's fault but Sony that had a full outage take the rage to them over it!
@MrStark Haha you hit a nerve with a couple there my dude.
Also being positive about a bad/ nothing situation must really effect some guys.
@Balaam_
Ah, Mr Pessimist. You sound just like you always do. That’s fine. You can do as you wish. Be pessimistic all you want.
I would have the same answer because it IS a limited outage regardless of me being affected by it or not.
As for someone hijacking my account, won’t happen because I have 2FA and pin enabled.
Imho, you worry too much about “what ifs”. Relax. Thanks for the “interrogation”.
Not trying to be a pain when I say they need to figure out a better ownership method. It shouldn’t matter if we are online or not to access our games. We paid for them!
Two of the five early access days, the game was unplayable. Early access is a scam. They have weaponized FOMO to the point where people pay extra to experience the buggy unplayable states of these games.
It's a short outage, geez. I go outside and sometimes my cell phone disconnects for 20 minutes. Calm down, it's not the end of the world. It happens to everything: PS, Xbox, phones, anything connected to the internet, you know. Servers get updated and packed. It's like making a huge excuse about nothing. If you have the time to go on the internet to rant about not playing a game, just go touch grass for once. I'm tired of coming here and it just sounds like AI bots without a single intelligent thought. Welcome to 2026!
@Mr-Cage Technically it was AWS’ fault. Lots of things were down besides PSN, like Sheetz online ordering 😅
@8th_Observer That's fair enough my dude I'm not mocking playstation for the outage it happens happened before no doubt will happen again same for Xbox but dudes coming here just to gloat like it's a win for them I can't help but mock.
@Mr-Cage except the only person gloating is the one saying it hasn’t affected them. No one else has?!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Do you want him to lie?
I'm sure im not effected by it my daughter was playing gamepass games this morning.
Just because it doesn't effect someone and the are happy about that fact doesn't mean they are gloating.
Should he just lie or not comment because he isn't effected as to not offend delicate flowers out there?
Come on man!
I think this outage is caused by the rumoured disc to digital program. It's very fishy that the outage says you can't even play physical games:
"You may have problems playing disc-based games right now."
https://support.xbox.com/en-gb/xbox-live-status
So what I think is happening is Don Mattrick's 2013 vision of XB1 has returned.
@Grumblevolcano thanks for the catch, updated!
People need to go outside and touch some grass. It's not even been 12 hours.
PlayStation last week, Xbox this week oh dear.
Where’s my switch 2…?
Not being able to play disc games offline is absolute BS
@Deformedpye The grass is awfully dry nowadays due to the weather very yellow not healthy.
Personally I'd advise to touch a tree just to be safe haha 😉
I’ve got the outage warning on my dashboard but everything I’ve tried so far seems to work just fine. I’m in the U.K. and don’t have Gamepass, so I’m not able to test multiplayer.
During the recent PSN outage most things also worked fine for me but GT7 went into a reduced “offline mode” and I couldn’t play FH5 at all as it couldn’t link to my Microsoft account.
Hopefully whatever is going on gets fixed in the next few hours.
@MrStark “It doesn’t affect me, so all is well!”
@Eastergregg I also dislike the digital online checks of Xbox. Just wanna drop my content in and play offline without getting pop ups and checks to sign up for digital content.
Good lord, what is wrong with people here. I have some muted so I cannot see the full convos but damn, are we falling out over "player A can still play games and player B cannot and Player B is getting angry because Player A is all OK"?!
If Player A can access something then it is 'all is well' for THEM. Unfortunately, for Player B, this would not be the case and is 'not all well' for THEM.
Luckily we have a portal where we can see what is going on and MS is being quite transparant about it all.
Xbox have royal screwed up how they handle digital content. Without an internet connection the Series X becomes a brick, and it has the worst internet connection of any piece of hardware in my house, constantly dropping or flaking out. It can't currently run over a wired connection. The only piece of hardware I have EVER owned that struggled with a hard line to the router.
You know what I don't need when I'm playing the digital games I bought from Steam on my PC? An internet connection. Steam doesn't care. My Steamdeck doesn't care. It's basically "Yeah, this is yours, you own it now."
That's how you do digital.
@Mr-Cage Thanks! Couldn't play anything, even already downloaded games on my Xbox on the basement. Switched to living room Xbox & can play again.
@ThatFilbo just so you know, you don't own digitial games. You own the license to the game (there are some exceptions to that of course with DRM free games), so Steam must be checking at some point. Admiditly, it must be doing a better job if you can easily access games offline, but I do know that if your Series X is set to Home Console, you can play your digitial and physical games. Again, this will have to talk back to the server at some point to verify the license. I am not expert, I am just reading the Xbox help files.
However, this outage is a different beast as it looks like some disc based games are not working. As @Grumblevolcano mentioned earlier, this could be the disc to digitial program being merged into production. I would not like to be the engineers right now.
In the end, the Series X, and the PS5 are really always online consoles now.
What did players expect when they bought a console that require server handshake to setup after buying? Being connection friendly even with physical games?
@Mr-Cage oh man you are gonna really love kcd2 , truly one of the greatest games I’ve ever played with an amazing cast and story alongside really great writing, the dlcs are also super amazing, so here’s to hoping that you can be able to enjoy it later today!
I'm tired of people spreading false information. The only games you can't play are ones that require online. This would be the same for any company. I tried to play Forza Horizon 6 this morning but couldn't so I switched and played Rollercoaster Tycoon (both copies are digital) and it works perfectly. If your Xbox isn't set to home then that's the issue...so then just play your home Xbox.
@Johnthealien Thanks mate I'm still very early in the game but I'm loving it so far hopefully I continue enjoying it.
I'm really liking Henry so far love his accent
@Mr-Cage oh man your in for quite the treat but and yah I’m just hoping that the servers will be back up soon but I understand it takes time for the Xbox engineers to do their magic
@Balaam_ "The turmoil of others" 😂 You really need to cheer up and get some perspective mate.
@GoldenPants Glad to be of help to you my friend.👍
@Johnthealien Hopefully it will be back up soon if not that's life haha.
It was working earlier so hopefully I'm lucky and it will be ok.
@ThatFilbo
That cause Steam doesn't necessarily force DRM, it basically on the developer of the individual game to enforce their DRM. Steam is just the middle man in this regard, and the not the police officer like Xbox, Playstation, or NIntendo. There are single player game on the steam that do require an internet connection for single player play.
@ZeD That is only partially the case. Some games DO run Steam's DRM, but it isn't mandatory and its extremely lightweight, and all games downloaded through Steam can be played offline forever as long as they don't operate a third-party DRM. The Steam client itself does the license check - which is exactly what the Xbox should do.
When Xbox goes down which, for me, is very frequently because the wired connection is so awful, unless I have a game I actually OWN (a non-GamePass game) and has no online component, and I also just happen to have it installed, I ain't playing nothing.
So basicallly, it's bricked.
It's a terrible and unnecessary and badly designed system.
@colt45z put the Xbox in offline mode and disc games play like normal.
@ThatFilbo but if you cannot access the Steam service (or any game service at that), for what ever reason (I have no idea how it fully works tbh) you would be in the same situation really. If you cannot access the place you download your games from, you cannot play them. Like you said about your Xbox.
The Xbox is doing a license check, it has to if you think about it with how the Home console function works. Hopefully they will fine tune this going forward. We can only hope I know Sony do it as we had the whole license issue earlier this year.
I have considered PC gaming recently, but with how much components cost these days (and I really do like how simple it is to plug a console in), I am happy sticking with the Xbox for now.
At the end of the day, Microsoft and Sony need to adopt Steam's digital attitude.... especially on refunds. This is the discussion we all should be having tbh.
So Friday was PSN outage day. Now it’s Xbox’s turn. Let’s hope it gets resolved quicker than PSN was.
Im sat on a plane half way to Orlando so not really to bothered, but I hope it gets sorted for those it is affecting.
I'm counting myself lucky. Been on all day with no issues.
@ZeD
Categorically incorrect. The majority of my Steam games I can play without ever logging in to Steam. Mainly only multi-player games are the ones that require it. I can simply unplug the internet from my PC and I'm still good.
And if you buy on GoG, absolutely nothing needs a log in.
@oopsiezz
Yes, this generation truly has been a race to the bottom between Sony and Microsoft.
when xbox is no more this is proof you wont be able to play anything you have bought
@ZeD It works differently. You dont have to access a service. The Steam client is on your PC. The license is on your PC. There's no online connection necessary to verify a game's license. It's all done locally on your machine. As long as I have Steam installed, I can play games that use their DRM.
@ZeD In my experience Xbox are very good with refunds my daughter bought a version of eafc26 for 100 euro and they refunded me within 5 days.
In fairness I never downloaded the game and told them I hadn't and wouldn't it was an accidental purchase.
@InterceptorAlpha Yes, I know this but the Steam client must be doing some license check at some point, unless it stores it locally in certs. Do you know how long you can be offline without connecting to the Steam server and your games still load? I am not trying to be rude or anything, I am really interested in how it works.
You can unplug your Xbox too and if it is set to your Home console, you can play any downloaded games you 'own'. The only games that I don't think will work (hopefully some one can confirm this) is ones downloaded through Game Pass. If so, that needs to be worked on by MS for sure.
Edit: just read (and was informed) that the licenses are tied to your Steam client locally, so the above about checking in is probably just me over thinking it all 🤣
@Mr-Cage
Most seasoned readers can tell gloating when they see it. Let’s not feign ignorance regarding intent.
That all being said I’m busy at work so no gaming for me, and I’m also not affected.
Lastly, I do think that in general people could probably stand to have less outrage regarding the Internet these days.
I should hope these comment sections don’t get too personal.
Everything seems to be working perfectly for me guys.
@kmtrain83 Well all I can do is Apologies if anything I've said is seen as gloating to me what he said wasn't but then I like the guy so I'm probably biased.
And I 100% agree with you to much outrage and negativity around these sites lately for what is a hobby.
I try not to get personal with people on here myself but I'm not perfect
@AverageGamer Steam has its own DRM service that is handled by entirely offline by the Steam Client. Some games require you to launch them from Steam because they use that DRM, but you DON'T have to be online for it to work.
Some don't use Steam's DRM, or ANY DRM. Some games implement their own.
You know since Bond & Phil exited it seems Sharma has just been sending us Meta style tech support; so XBOX as now in all CAPS keeps getting bugged and silly new add ons like another UI to the dashboard that makes you aware of all the upcoming issues XBOX is going to have under new leadership?….wait I mean; we all love Sharma…or w.e. just make the almost $900 + priced console (in regards to purchasing extra storage after) playable FULLY; all CAPS lol FULLY PLAYABLE XBOX SERIES X sounds amazing.
I tried downloading my backwards compatible digital copy of RE HD to the series X last night around 11pm EST and nothing would download. Reported. See today the outage is full on: and it’s been 12 hours since that moment. Do they have actual humans working on this or AI? I’m not sure but either way seems like more issues with every fix lately in the constant updates the console has been having since Sharma took lead…debate now!
@Balaam_ What does an account being hijacked have to do with anything being talked about here? System outages and stolen accounts are two completely different things.
@ZeD Microsoft refunds are not far off steam refund, you can download a game claim a refund within 14 days of purchase and have less than two hours of playtime across all accounts
Sonys refund policy is terrible, you can't even downland and try a game.
@ThatFilbo just done a little research on the matter and can see that is the case. Like I said before, I have no idea how Steam worked and most cases around licenses need to talk back every now and again.
However, you would need to still have the game installed to launch it and if, for what ever reason, you could not access the server where that data is, you can not play the game.
The Xbox does support offline mode in a similar way, but again, you need to make sure you have the game downloaded first and 'Hindsight is 20/20' 🤣
Anyway, I hope with MS moving towards the Hybrid console, they will relook at how they currently handle licenses.
Edit: forgot to say thanks for the details. You learn something new every day
@NicksyStixx12391 maybe they’re just mentioning another occurrence that is hindering the ability for them to enjoy the game library as well?
For example few weeks ago with the other outage my HOME Xbox kept saying I couldn’t play offline so I would go to the my home Xbox section in the settings and my account would be unchecked; so I kept pressing the check box…the bugged our menu; to me it wasn’t registering anything; but the next day that Xbox home setting was removed: so basically each input of selecting and de selecting it that was showing as not registering IT ACTUALLY WAS: therefore now because of that error I can’t make that Xbox my home Xbox anymore and I’m currently also not able to play any of my digital games anymore which is almost all of them at this point…? Maybe that’s something similar to what they’re getting at? Idk….but tis situation happened to me. When I reached over to Microsoft I just kept getting in contact with the help desk AI and it wouldn’t help me get in contact with a human for support. So I’m stuck now waiting an entire YEAR until I can make it my home Xbox again….let the sad music play
@Schonks 2 hours? I did not know that! That is really in line with how Steam handles refunds. Thanks for that info
I can play my physical games atm… I don’t even see ANY reason why my physical games wouldn’t work and at worst I would just disconnect my Xbox from internet just the time to play.
Well come on Asha where are you now? You should have had this delt with by now. What good is making Gears exclusive and asking people about backwards compatible if you cant get the console to work?
I don't think this should be used to make some argument about Digital libraries but more against LOCKED platforms. It doesn't matter if you own a game like Call of Duty or Battlefield on Disc or bought it digitally, you still won't be able to play if the network you are paying your sub-fee for goes down.
Digital hasn't been an issue for PC players and their games, it doesn't stop them from playing the games they want online with their friends and the games they bought a decade or more ago digitally can be downloaded and run on ANY PC inc handheld PC's. Their Digital libraries aren't 'locked' to a specific brand or era of PC's like your Physical Library is.
You buy a PS3 game on disc, its ONLY playable on PS3 and yet if you bought a game from that era on PC, it would still be playable today on ANY PC hardware - there isn't BC or issues.
The issues come because of the Anti-consumer nature of Consoles. You sacrifice the freedom for a cheap subsidised box of fixed Hardware locked to a specific manufacturer and often Hardware too. Historically, if you bought a game on Cartridge, it was ONLY playable on that very specific Hardware so when you upgraded to the 'new' Console, those old games were left behind. You can't play N64 Cartridges on Game Cube, can't play Game Cube games on Wii etc.
You will 'lose' access to your Physical games too if they require a PS+ or Game Pass Sub to play. Stop paying a sub and half your games and Content is locked behind that pay wall. It doesn't matter if you bought Destiny or Avengers on Disc, you can't play them. If you buy games on disc today, no guarantee you can play them on the next gen Hardware and unlikely to as they probably won't have a Disc Drive, but your digital library can - like upgrading your PC doesn't make you old games unplayable.
The fact is that Consoles are 'locked' and as such you have very little choice. You can lose access to your games just by letting your Subscription lapse whether you bought on disc or not and lose access to playing with friends online too regardless of whether you bought on disc or not.
I wasnt having any issues playing Forza Horizon 6 , at least till I try to access one of the vehicles from the Welcome Pack and it kept throwing me back to the server. I know I paid for that.
@badboidre Whatever issue you were having was still a server-side issue. I don't want to sound like a grumpy old person, but having your account stolen has literally nothing to with xbox services being down, or there being a bug in the system.
When people are trying to figure out a problem thats currently happening, "what-if-isms" don't help anybody, and don't add anything.
Asking "what would you do if your account got hijacked" in response to someone who isnt having issues, is the equivalent of asking "what if your xbox spontaneously combusted into a pile of ash?"
A what-if is a what-if. Of course the dude would be upset. The question is still pointless in this context.
@themightyant Amusing comment when your discs don't work either. I genuinely thought you were better than this. I guess that's on me.
I hope the services are OK again soon.
This is why Xbox needs to get better with physical releases. Besides a few most of Xbox’s first party games have been dog s h I t physical releases with hardly no game being fully on disc.
@Titntin it seems a lot of it’s a mess right now; Elden ring had the exclamation mark on it in my library but I clicked it and am still able to play it?
ANIMAL your profile picture is the best
@Tasuki I’m holding the signs with you on this
Is this only an issue for console? The Xbox PC app seems to be working fine for me but I only see people online that are gaming on PC.
@ZeD they said 2…but…I have played them for less and not able to do a refund…so be careful if you are trying to buy games to try and then refund if they don’t work….i don’t think that’s a solid exercise for XBOX
Got to love modern technology. Fortunately my Dreamcast works just fine, so I'll play some Skies of Arcadia
@badboidre Cheers mate. Animal rocks!
@badboidre cool, thanks for that. Hopefully Xbox will change some rules going forward with their plan of the Hybrid console.
All of my physical games play perfectly fine. I don’t get all these « blabla physical is also impacted »
@Titntin The discs worked just fine on PS5 when PSN was down, don't know why it wasn't the same on Xbox, I was referencing both. Not so adorable, unlike Animal!
Look I know we fundamentally disagree on Digital & Physical, you want us to all go digital to save the world from plastic waste, and I massively respect that, but do you need to add an ad-hominem comment each time? We disagree on this, that is fine by me. I still like you.
I think it might be the outage has many issues but they don’t effect every system the same? I have some games for example that didn’t show up unless I signed in and out of the account; I have some accounts right now that don’t allow the home sharing feature to even work as they used to; and some games won’t download after clicking to install them (in regards to physical like you Sindayl all those copies of games work just fine: although I had already installed the update it requires online before this outage)
& yes I have many accounts as I was blessed with a type of OCD that caused me to create many accounts in my youth and purchase games on all of them so now thank goodness Xbox allows over 32 profiles at once on one system because I literally have so many 😅 always a good day for mental illness awareness
It is Monday. As long as Azure is up, I am zen.
Still unaffected. Thank you, Xbox.
Fake news and totally blown out of context. I think it is just Playstation fanboys angry because their Playstation is down every week for multiple days and they are jealous of Xbox, thats why they must come up with these stories even if in reality 1 in 1 million Xbox players are affected by these and even then Xbox instantly focuses personally to solve the problem for the players!
@Onlyboxmatters Xbox trolling themselves? I think you need to breathe mate - this outage has not even been reported on Push. No one is getting Xbox to report outages for ammo in a kiddie console war. Think about it for a second...
Edit NVM. In between all the deleted posts its clear to see you make up what you want. You go right ahead.
@themightyant 'Every time?' I believe this is the 2nd time I've replied to you in the last several weeks and you've made at least a dozen posts. Most of the time I shake my head and move right on, but just occasionally I feel the need to express my dismay that someone I normally think has a balanced view, is completely unable to act in that way when it comes to this subject.
I'm not ripping into you and I've not been rude. Better to not comment of course, but I have a long history of letting my mouth run anyway and theres no signs this will ever stop.
If I'm disappointed and wish to point out obvious irony, I'm afraid I will do so sometimes, sorry but that's the way I am.
Now just imagine an All Digital world.
Physical media people. It's the ONLY way to go.
@MrStark
"Still unaffected"
@MrStark just jumped on my Xbox (finally) after a long work day and it is all working for me too.
Let's have out own exclusive party!
@Balaam_ yeah I love people who speak without candor because the problem isn't theirs.... I hope karma comes back to give them a little kick in the right direction.... This is getting ridiculous...
@EfYI I'm not effected I can also access the halo game coming out tomorrow so yeah some can get access to online no problem.
@Onlyboxmatters It can't be fake news if Xbox themselves are reporting there's problems.
Playstation fans aren't Jedi they don't have a mind trick!
I can’t change my resolution from 640p and can download previously de-listed games not in my library.
Im able to log into my account and play fortnite with no
Problems.
I am gratefully not affected either!! Woo hoo 👍🏻😎
Crazy that it’s been affecting not just digital but physical games as well…apparently nobody is safe
Xbox is fine for me on PC. didn’t even notice it
I was lucky enough to avoid this one. I never seem to hear about or experience Steam, epic, or GOG having these issues.
