Even after reading the article I'm a little confused as to what the thesis is here. So many great, succesful games use custom engines, the RE Engine, Dantelion, Decima, Idtech, Nintendo's engines, etc. And so many PC asset flips use popular engines like Unreal and Unity. The real issues with Xbox and 343 lie so deep, you can point at the Engine, the short campaign, the lack of features, the lacking multiplayer, the mismanagement. Basically throw a dart at any aspect of that game or studio and you'll find a potential reason why it failed. The reality is that the studio's and Xbox's way of making games is broken and changing the Engine wouldn't have changed that.
Xbox misses out on a popular game - Fans complain the game didn't come to Xbox - the game finally comes out, they don't buy it - Studios look at those numbers and don't support Xbox at launch The cycle continues...
To me it was weird that the 2TB update of the Series X seems to only have been made available through the Galaxy Black limited edition, but now I'm seeing that even the normal one is hard to find.
I hope this and the Starfield situation put to rest the illusion that Xbox wants to put the games in the hands of as many players as possible. Don't get me wrong, this is the logical thing to do when you buy a studio, but the lengths to which Xbox tries to communicate the opposite while keeping the games on their ecosystem is not a great look. Just own the studios you're buying and move on.
It's interesting to see this piece essentially gloating when Xbox is the only console of the three to ever hide the "turn off auto-renewal" on the console itself. I don't know if it still does this, but Nintendo and Sony have never done this in my experience.
If what Phil is saying was actually true, we wouldn't see unplayable games on Xbox first party discs. I've gone digital-only for new Xbox games for this reason.
I've always been under the impression that Bluehole is the kind of studio that would do this kind of unethical stuff. For so long it was the only BR to not be F2P (and still had all the monetization the others had) They tried to claim copyright over a game mode. The Xbox One port launched unplayable to the point that the mobile port played better. I could go on. Just add NFTs to the list.
This article is... weird. It certainly lives in a bubble, purely theorical at best. Most places sell the Xbox One consoles at MSRP at least, if used sure, they sell it for maybe 50USD less in some cases. Having one still has it's uses, but they're on their way out, the One S already has issues with some games and the One X has gotten expensive.
@Dezzy70 I think it's coming out early in the day, depending where you live, you might still be able to pre-load if you plan to play it that same night.
@John117 Nothing quite like reducing a conversation to name-calling to show people how coherent your thoughts are. Now, to your comment: That's... an overproduction issue. Not inherent to physical media itself. You don't seem to know how servers work, and how hard and expensive they are to maintain (just look at how many are abandoned in favor of new things that come out).
@John117 Yeah, not a pollution issue when servers are known to cause it themselves. And if you argue clean energy is the answer, I'd argue for recycling. Don't force your preferences on others
My Hyperkin Duke had issues with the analog sticks and triggers within the first 3 months and Hyperkin refused to provide any kind of service. Not buying their products ever again.
On New Super Lucky's Tale you can tell some animations on enemies and objects like coins were keyframed at 60fps, since they look "jumpy" compared to the smooth ones like Lucky himself.
Expensive, but I think it might be correct. 1TB of NVMe is $130-$170USD depending on brand and speed. This, being modular, faster than the usual speeds, custom-made, I can see that 100%. Although I'd be surprised if that price was still around come next holiday.

Re: Digital Foundry Impressed By Halo: Campaign Evolved, But Worried About Unreal Engine 5
I saw the video and didn't find any of them to be impressed at all. "A warm welcome of sorts" was the sentence they started with lol.
Re: Sarah Bond Shows Off Where Microsoft Is 'Prototyping For The Next Generation Of Xbox'
You know what?
Before this video I had my doubts whether Xbox would make a new console or not.
Now I think they won't.

Re: Xbox's New 'Adaptive Joystick' Is Officially Now Available To Buy
The Wii nunchuk was really ahead of its time.

Re: EA Play Is Getting A Price Increase Outside Of Xbox Game Pass
I wasn't a client for them before, I'm definitely not gonna start now.
Re: Talking Point: Xbox Series X|S Owners, How's Your Storage Looking In 2024?
Funny, I recently bought the 2TB SSD. The 1TB from the console just wasn't enough for everyone that uses it at the house.
Re: Report: Redfall Was 'Immediately Cancelled' For PS5 Following Xbox Takeover
@Kaloudz That's very diferent, Deathloop was funded by PlayStation. Not honoring it wasn't an option.

Re: What's All This About A Cheaper, Ad-Filled Version Of Xbox Game Pass?
@carlos82 "you can't afford Gamepass then surely you can't afford to be gaming."
The worst take I could imagine.
Re: Xbox Engineer Explains Why Smart Delivery Forces Series X|S Version
I'm sure the fact that the Xbox Series only takes proprietary SSDs is a coincidence.

If this has M&K, it's exactly what we needed to have 2 player matches.

Wasn't there someone on the comments of the physical games swearing you could do this? Guess you can't believe everything you read on the internet.

Aaaand I've cancelled my preorder. I'm glad this came out before it shipped.
Re: Age Of Empires 4 Team Suggests An Xbox Version Is On The Cards
I know people are interested on playing it on Xbox, but I like the prospect of having this game on Streaming for non-Windows computers too.
Re: Xbox 20th Anniversary Special Edition Controller Arrives This November
@PhileasFragg That's... why they do these editions. To interest you in a controller you wouldn't otherwise want.
Re: Older Xbox Controllers To Receive 'Next-Gen' Firmware Update
I'm a little surprised the Elite 2 is being treated as legacy support, since we're getting a new edition in a couple months.

What a fantastic way to punish early adopters.
Remember this game had a big push from word of mouth in the community, so it's specially crappy.
Re: PS4 Game Horizon Zero Dawn Has Native Xbox Controller Support On PC
@Menchi Yeah, I'm kinda surprised this is an article at all.
Maybe the writer doesn't really play on PC.
