Re: Talking Point: Do You Think Project Helix Will Support Physical Xbox Games?

@HonestHick Are you actually reading comments? It feels like you're just picking and choosing parts. Again, as I said in my first comment, you can get an external player, both for a car or laptop if you REALLY wanted to play CDs. You can also rip your CDs and play them as FLAC/MP3 files.

No one had to give up on other mediums because Blu-Rays, CDs, vinyl, cassettes, etc are still being released. Players are still being released for all the formats. It's not the same with video games at all, which is WHY external drives should still be a thing for future consoles. There's no other other options to keep these physical games playable on future consoles going forward, if the console makers don't provide something.

@GeminiX53 It was going to happen sooner or later, regardless of whether this was a PC.

@BacklogBrad MS says they're all about preservation. I'd hope they at least offer an external drive you could buy. But I guess the smart business move would be to make everyone rebuy their collection.

@Gabrie Years? They still manufacture a Series X with a disc drive. Lol

@Fiendish-Beaver It plays OG and 360 discs. And it's not really as much as it plays them directly, but rather the discs act as a key to unlock a download to the game. It was the case with One too.

@belmont I mean, if you can still play a game from beginning to end on a physical disc without needing to download part of it, I'd say that's complete. Plenty of games during the PS2 and Xbox era got bug fixes or new features on more recent prints of the game (usually the greatest hits/player choice printing). Would you also say those aren't "complete" either?

@HonestHick Are you intentionally being obtuse? There are countless ways to still use music discs. You can buy a disc player for your car or laptop if you wanted to. You can rip your music collection if you don't want to bother with an external player.

You don't have those options with video games because the discs are proprietary. There's no third party manufacture keeping the games alive. Besides emulation and using your old previous gen systems, you're SOL. And good luck emulating with the the last and current gen. Heck, emulation is still kinda iffy with 360 and PS3.

And I don't get the example you used with your mom. New record, tape, and CD players are all still readily available. It's not like you have to rely on used players (despite older players usually being higher quality). There's been a renaissance for all three (especially vinyl). Record sales are up year over year. And, again, these formats aren't proprietary. You aren't limited to playing Columbia Records vinyl/cassettes/discs on Sony made players.

Every time you post on an article about physical media, you seem so fervently against it. I don't get why you seem to be campaigning for fewer consumer options.

@sixrings You really think they'll say anything substantial at GDC that the public will hear about?

Only reason why I played consoles was because of exclusives, physical discs, and powerful specs in a small form factor. Exclusives are basically dead now and physical seems to be on the way out. The only thing that kept me from PC gaming was how it's harder (and pricier) to build a small form factor PC that fits next to my TV. I like that online play is free. I like that you're not locked to one storefront. I like that you can use mods. A hybrid Xbox/PC would be perfect for me.

@Banjo- Hardware sales DO matter. If it didn't, why kill off Windows Phone, Zune, etc? Years of R&D aren't free. Manufacturing isn't free. Marketing isn't free. If Microsoft is making its money from other platforms, what reason would they keep hardware around for?

I doubt they'd kill off the Xbox brand as a whole, but consoles wouldn't be developed and manufactured by Microsoft anymore. At best, third parties would slap the name on their hardware (ala ROG Ally). At worst, Xbox would become strictly a subscription service and third party developer.

@Steel76 Because it's not practical for everyone? They either don't want to run a cable from one room to another or they don't want to have a tower sitting in their living room. You can stream, but then you're bringing latency into the equation.

@GeorgeKal All of their games are movies? Stellar Blade? Rise of Ronin?

@MrBook Not sure why tying your identity to a video game console is any weirder than the other examples you used. It's all strange.

@Weapon_Wheel Why don't you want to go Nintendo, PlayStation, or PC? You have three other options and you don't like any of them? Lol
