As we move further and further into 2025, Xbox's multiplatform approach is now a very tangible reality, but at one time it seemed like an unbelievable change of course for a console platform holder. That time, funnily enough, was exactly one year ago today - when boss Phil Spencer ended rampant speculation about Xbox exclusives and announced "a business update event" to discuss the future.

Looking back, this was a very strange time for Xbox, and in some ways the business update itself still feels quite weird to watch. The 'podcast' format always felt odd for this sort of event, the announcements still didn't really tell us the full picture - and Microsoft has more than doubled down on its new approach since this event merely dipped Xbox's toe into new, multiplatform waters.

What we mean by those 'dipped toes' is that, around this time in 2024, Xbox was still only committing to four exclusives moving over to other platforms - and it didn't even name them during the event. Funnily enough, the team also confirmed that one of those games wouldn't be Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which obviously changed later in the year when Xbox announced a PS5 version.

Aside from chatter about console exclusive plans that have ultimately changed and evolved lots since February 2024, Microsoft did make some more positive announcements back during the event. The team revealed that Xbox Game Pass had hit a new user milestone, and it also talked about hardware plans - including a new lineup of Series X|S consoles and hints about the "largest technical leap ever" coming with Microsoft's next-gen console.

Anyway, the one-year anniversary of the event itself is actually in just over a weeks' time on February 15th, but we thought it interesting to look back at the moment where Phil Spencer sought to end speculation on Xbox's future. A future that seems secure, but is very different to what we all envisaged just a couple of years ago.
