Blood Dragon is by far the better game, but I appreciated it more having played through 3 first. In terms of the full Far Cry open world I preferred New Dawn. 2 would be better if it actually had a stealth mechanic. 4&5 were enjoyable too. I’ve never given Primal much of a chance and have yet to play 6.
One thing that I’ve gotten tired of is the constant trippy drug themes. It was fun at first but I just find myself playing through those levels as quickly as possible to get back to the good stuff. What I loved about Blood Dragon (aside from the full on 80s vibe) was the complete lack of it taking itself seriously at all.
I recently got a Series X and am now saving for a descent 4K tv. I debated getting the Series S, but ultimately it came down to a couple of factors: firstly when I do finally upgrade my TV I will get the benefits of the Series X. Secondly the disc drive. If I got the Series S I would have had to keep my One S set up to play my disc games. Thirdly, physical games drop massively in price in general, so I can take advantage of those when they turn up. Finally the fact that it is also a 4K/Blu Ray player is another bonus on top. However, for the price (and if you have been mostly digital on Xbox since last generation) then the Series S is a good machine. I just wanted to get the best system available.
I’ve played all the Halo games and genuinely enjoyed Infinite and I’m struggling to see what problems people have with it. I’ll admit it was a bit jarring at first with the time jump from Halo 5 which left a lot of questions (with the flashback to Master Chief being spaced I honestly thought that maybe they’d killed him off!) but once it got going I was able to fill in the gaps. Halo has jumped around before and I’ve always seen it as if they are almost ‘zooming in’ on particular chapters in a bigger story, possibly the more interesting ones. For example, as interesting as it would be to see Cortana’s devastation of the galaxy it wouldn’t necessarily be that fun to play.
Infinite seemed to do a good job of mirroring the original Halo which also started ‘in media res’ and began with the Chief alone on an alien world. I never bother with online shooters (don’t have the reactions anymore) but I’ve always enjoyed the campaigns of the Halo games (though some like Reach are much better than others such as Guardians). I am interested in going through it again in the future as I played it on my One S and have just got the Series X.
I use Gamepass (which I only use when I can find a cheap deal, I’ve never paid full price for it) as a ‘try before you buy’ facility. The fact that big games often release day 1 means I can play a game, perhaps finish it once and then look for a cheap deal later on if I really want to own it. For example I played Doom Eternal day 1 for nothing, kept going for a bit and then waited until I found a cheap deal to own it physically (I don’t have a huge number of physical games for the system but there are some that I want on disc). Ended up getting it for £5 sealed about a year later then took advantage of a sale on the dlc to get that for £6. So thanks to Gamepass I was able to try a game properly, dip in and out for a few months, then get the full game (which at time of release plus dlc would have been £70+) for £11. It’s a great way of saving money.
And that’s not even discussing the number of indie games I have played thanks to it that I would never have taken a chance on paying for before playing them!
Love Dead Space 1 & 2. Was hyped for 3 until it got to the micro transaction part and I just quit and never came back.
If this is as good as the Resident Evil 2 remake it’ll be superb. I wonder if they’ll make any changes to the story or just minor changes like in RE2? Hopefully not too much so veterans can enjoy the game they loved with modern features whilst a new generation get to see what was so special about the original in the first place.
I have a physical copy of Rare Replay. The digital goes for £5 sometimes, kind of wish I had bought it to get Goldeneye free (but that depends on how much it’ll cost to buy it on its own).
Won’t the fact that a lot of Microsoft’s stuff ends up on PC also influence this? If people already have a decent PC then they won’t bother with an Xbox but get a PlayStation for exclusives?
Not trolling; the last PS I had was PS2 and I’m still using my Xbox one S daily. I just wonder if PC ended up being the ‘hidden’ competitor in this story on top of the PS4’s market dominance?
They’re all great but Doom 2 was a phenomenon when it came out on PC back in the 90 so I’ll always have a soft spot for it. That being said, Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal make you feel like a total badass when playing them!
Blood Dragon by far. I’ve played 2 to about half way through, but it’s so repetitive that I didn’t see the point of finishing it. 3 was great, but the drug factor just got dull very quickly (though I know it isn’t like they had an agenda) and the protagonist wasn’t particularly likeable. 4 was good fun, the grey morality involved in the story and it has a great bad guy. Likewise, 5 is fun to play and I liked the whole cult angle. I actually think that New Dawn is even better. However, Blood Dragon is just 6 hours of perfection. Spot on 80’s movie and cultural references, a really likeable badass protagonist (Michael ‘Hicks/Kyle Reece’ Bene), ridiculously overpowered weapons and a focused (though short) campaign. Add the brilliant 16 bit cut scenes, Dad joke-esque sense of humour and awesome soundtrack, it is the Xbox game I revisit time and time again (it was the first 360 game I collected all the achievements for). I only wish we had a proper sequel (the trials games was enjoyable but pointless) or some sort of physical release. Mark 4 style mutha-f****!
Dead Space is excellent, really creepy atmosphere. However, what gives Alien Isolation the edge for me is the fact that as scary as the necromorphs are in Dead Space you can kill them! The catharsis from that offsets the fear. Alien Isolation doesn’t give you that at all. Aside from some time at the beginning and middle of the game you are never safe from the creature and have no real way of fighting back. That plus the shear level of design and faithfulness to the original films aesthetics makes it easily the scariest game I’ve ever played. In fact, due to its similarities (first person, confined spaces) I couldn’t get too far in Resident Evil 7, as it reminded me of Isolation too much! This coming from someone who has played and completed every mainline Resi game since the PS1.
Downloaded this on Gamepass (it says it only has the PC version but it downloads to Xbox fine). On stage 12 on normal setting before stopping for the night. Really happy so far. Hope I can get some local multiplayer going when everything calms down...
MS seem to be making all the right noises. However, it is not just about having the most powerful hardware to be successful (only the SNES won a generation as the most powerful and that was only because it’s main competition was designed to put compete the previous generation).
If the games are good, if the service is straightforward and reliable and (for me at least) the price is fair, then they could be on to a winner. I was late to both 360 (2012) and One (2018) and I think they are both excellent systems that have given me hundreds of hours of fun. I’d imaging I will wait a while before upgrading, as the games will fall in price by then. I would say I’m ‘optimistic’ about the new Xbox.
Just a heads up: I bought the 3 months + 3 months free from amazon. If you select ‘automatic renewal’ when you enter the code (which I just turned off last week so I wouldn’t pay without finding a deal first) they give you another month for free!
So I just got 7 months of Gamepass Ultimate for the cost of 3!
Sad news. I used to subscribe to the Official Nintendo Magazine, then stopped when I got my 360 and the support for Wii was drying up. When I got a 2DS a while later I started buying it again only for it to close in late 2014! <sobs>
Have started a subscription to Retro Gamer. I would recommend it.
@FullbringIchigo it’s because they can. Plenty of people are willing to buy day one for full price and the convenience of never having to even leave the house is obviously a big incentive for a lot of people who will pay the same price for a digital copy as a physical. At least in the days of physical you could trade in for a good chunk of what you paid soon afterwards. That’s a major problem with Nintendo as many of their games never seem to drop in price (so a digital sale is probably how I’ll end up getting the few switch exclusives I’m interested in).
At least with sales on the online store, games with gold and Gamepass money can be saved. Tbh the number of games I have bought since game pass arrived has dropped dramatically. No point in wasting more money on something that it turns out I didn’t like. It also means I have gotten to play some corkers that I might otherwise have ignored.
@FullbringIchigo yeah and considering that it’s even cheaper for the game companies to digitally publish something, you’d think that the prices would reflect that. That’s why I only buy games on sale or use Gamepass these days.
On Gameboy (!) Super Mario Land (my son’s taking his first tentative steps into gaming in a Gameboy Color. He now likes playing it through the Gameboy Player on my GameCube!
@FullbringIchigo again, I agree with you. However, I’m not talking about vanilla versions for games (you’re totally right with what you said there) but a lot of games these days don’t even have the full game on the disc. So it’s not just patches, dlc and updates that would be unavailable, but a great big chunk of the game itself!
If you download a digital version onto your system you download the full game there and then, plus the later additions should be saved onto the hard drive as well (when that does then it really is goodbye).
I own a decent sized physical game collection, dating right back to Master System and Gameboy cartridges which all still work well. It pains me to see that gong (feel the same way about my DVD collection) but with older games it was a case of when you bought the game you got the full game on physical media.
Imagine buying a blu ray and only getting half the film on it and having to download the rest? In the future what if you couldn’t download the rest? That is what vanilla versions of many big games on disc are turning into. It’s not good but unfortunately with games clocking in at 100gb+ there is no appropriate storage medium available that is also cost effective to manufacture (look at the price of Switch carts; it’s like the N64 days all over again!
FullbringIchigo I totally agree with you, especially about the price of second hand games. However, if further down the road the patches and updates are no longer available to download then you’re left with a £10 coaster 😐
Now that most Xbox one games need a huge update when installing them, I have swapped to digital, at least for this system. There’s no point owning a disc with half a game on it and Microsoft’s account system is pretty good. With continuing support for the 360 as well it just makes sense. Plus the convenience is great.
As for Switch, I only own one physical game (Smash bros) which I got with the system. The ridiculous cost of games has put me off buying any others. I did splurge on the Mega Drive collection at Xmas but that was so I always had a ‘virtual console’ on the system after the inevitable dropping of support for online (bye bye NES/SNES games!) I only have a 16gb micro SD card in there that I had lying around, so switch stuff is relegated to smaller retro games (it’s great having all the old Doom games on there). If Doom 2016 ever gets a good sale on the eshop I may double dip, as I love it on Xbox and a portable version would be good fun!
Power has historically never won a console generation. It’s what you do with it that counts. The only time it really mattered was SNES vs Mega Drive, the SNES was more powerful (it was also 2 years younger and the Mega Drive was designed to outpace the NES when it released in 1989) but ultimately it was like Optimus Prime vs Megatron; it really could go either way but whichever way it did it was awesome to watch!
Heavyarms55 however it’ll be new ones. Unless they’ve got a really good presence online I can’t imagine they’ll survive (at least in the UK). Our government looks set to close all retail stores (because people cannot be trusted to just stay home!). Most stores still rely on foot traffic and with ridiculous rental prices in towns and cities many shops will disappear completely.
Of course new ones will spring up once this is over but I feel terrible for any small independent shop now...
Backwards compatibility is great. There are so many older games that I only discover years after the system is not supported anymore. Case in point, I'm just finishing Dead Space on 360 via my One S. Looks great. Plus the way games are organised on the system means I can always see what I can download to play (which wasn't so clear on the 360).
This really could signal the death of the physical game store. Places that are based around trade ins (life CEX in the UK) or retro will survive (or be replaced by a new shop that does the same) but 6-12 months of most people only buying digital or delivery from the likes of Amazon means I think games shops with new games will be gone soon.
I’d also say that if you are new or don’t have a console yet the One S digital is a cracking deal at £149. Assuming it still comes with a few games (Sea of Thieves, Tekken 7 and Minecraft I think) plus the 4 games a month for signing up to a cheap Gold deal online, meals you wouldn’t need to buy a new game anytime soon. Yeah, there’s no Blu-ray/dvd playback (as if people haven’t got a player already) and you can’t take advantage of cheap second hand discs but it’s still a decent deal for someone just looking to get a system and games.
