We've been talking a lot about free games here at Pure Xbox over the past few days. It all kicked off with the announcement that The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game was generously being made available for free on Xbox One, which came out of nowhere and was certainly a welcome surprise.
With a little help from Pure Xbox member @ThanosReXXX, we also highlighted some of the Xbox 360 titles you can still download for free (including on Xbox One). And of course, there were also the usual Xbox Live Free Play Days titles that were made available over the weekend, such as Fallout 76.
So, while we're talking free games, here's a question - if you could pick just one game to download for free on Xbox, what would you choose? Would it be a major AAA title, or would you go for an indie classic? Something recent, or a critically-acclaimed favourite from years past? Let us know in the comments.

tough question i honestly can't think of just one right now
i'll get back to you later
@FraserG Oh, wow, I'm in an article!
Small nitpick: the 'e' is minor case...
As for which game I'd pick if I could have any:
Red Dead Redemption. Never got into it back in the day, and as it so happens, I looked it up today, but the current price didn't sit well with me, because 29,99 for a 10 year old game is WAY too much.
Tough decision but i guess i'll go with Doom Eternal..
@ThanosReXXX Fixed
Tough... One game, Forza Horizon 4 or Doom Eternal possibly, then again although it's cheap now, Rare Replay should count as one game and you get so many great games included within that... That would probably be a wise choice....
I'll wait for Cyberpunk please..
@FraserG Thanks, much appreciated.
Darksiders Genesis or if I'd have to pick an indie game it would be River city Girls
I would download Lost Odyssey first.
Then, I would dl all of the jrpg from last gen, like Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant and so on.
@Tatoun The question was about ONE free game you could download, not an entire library...
Halo 2. There’s no FPS campaign that comes close to it. And the online mode nothing will ever come close to it even in today’s society.
Doom Eternal for me too. I’ve heard some negative things about the changes in this one that has put me off buying it, but it looks so good aesthetically that I am keen to try it. Would be an idea freebie for me right now.
@JetmanUK It is amazing graphically, possibly the pinnacle of this gen (In my humble opinion).....
Hard to answer because so many of my picks are on GamePass, but I guess I'll go with Lost Odyssey. I know it's been free before, but I always miss it. That's a game I've wanted to get into for a long time.
I'll take Resident Evil 2. I always miss it when it's on sale and it's the only game I can think of right now 🤣
Doom Eternal
Star Wars Battlefront II.
I really really got into Star Wars five years ago, absolutely loved Force Awakens and Rogue One, but over the years the way people have acted and the things I've found out about have really killed the series for me.
I still want to play as Rey, or Jyn, but I don't want to spend any money on the game.
p.s. Mandalorian was great because Baby Yoda is amazing, and I will still buy Fallen Order once it drops to under 20.
This is tough because if I want a game, I'm OK putting money down for it, even if it means waiting for a sale to be able to afford it/get it at a price I feel is worth the value of the game.
For me to want a game for free it would have to be a game I don't actually want. So I pick Hello Neighbor. My son loves it (and others popular with young streamers), and it would be a way to get him a game I don't believe is worth that much money.
Wanna see what the fuss about Lost Odyssey is
Xbox? As in the original console only, or Xbox, as in the entire family of consoles?
In the former case it would be either Star Wars KOTOR 2 or Fable
In the latter case it would be the Mass Effect Trilogy - or if that is cheating and since I can't let myself only play one of them, then Fable 2.
Resident Evil 3 or Doom Eternal for me. Want to play them both but not paying £50 each. I’ll wait for the inevitable sale.
For me it would be Sekiro, I love the Souls games even tho I have not managed to complete any of them. I am a bit of a sadomasochist when it comes to them, But Sekiro is supposed to be a bit harder.... It would sweeten the deal.
Being realistic, a good AA game that I haven't heard of or a backwards compatibility one.
