Still rubbish. Horrible for people like me whom only buy physical. The point physical is that at any moment in time as long as one has a functioning console, a disc game can be installed and played. Whatever game version on that disc can be played even without internet. Same for all previous console generations. We know corporations always look at their bottom line and won’t keep servers running indefinitely, plus will delist. I don’t care if others argue well they will support a game for a decade. Still rubbish as that means one doesn’t own a game then. Physical copies should always be on a physical medium and not require an internet connection. The only exceptions being games that are online only and people know what they are getting into. I don’t like the modern gelded ownership model.
@Banjo- gaming is a hobby and no consumer is entitled to a gaming product from a particular ecosystem or big developer if it’s not available on what they purchased. Exclusivity will still matter going forward as that is what makes a brand or platform. 3rd party developers mostly always push on all platforms unless someone pays them which has been the case for the past few generations. This won’t change. I’m not sure why so many are worked up over a few games not being available from a third party that makes unique non-western games. Square enix always has unrealistic expectations anyways. Even with team Xbox their shareholders would still be displeased with a few more sells from the Xbox base which has a relatively small fan base for these non-western games. I have always had a PS and Xbox. I have no problem with both brands having exclusives as competition is good for any industry.
@shoeses you are correct. Most Xbox gamers overwhelmingly prefer western style games. Which is why I never was upset about most JRPGs not being on Xbox. For me I always saw PlayStation as the place to play those non western titles.
Now of course there is a small percentage of Xbox gamers that will be happy but like you said this won’t change anything for Xbox.
@Nic-Noc20th-C they can afford it. Remember SE always has over ambitious goals for many of their non-western style games which sell well but to them they consider them under performing.
@nomither6 I see no problem with third party being exclusive if agreements were made between two corporate entities. No platform is entitled to anything third party. Now of course a third party developer will make more money if they released everywhere.
@Banjo- third party games don’t have to be on all systems. Systems aren’t entitled to every title just because Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo don’t own the studio. Most of SE games that are popular are non western style games. So for me it made sense for them to be closer to Sony.
@LX_FENIX monopoly isn’t an appropriate word to use if Xbox goes away as Sony just has the only console in the serious console space. A monopoly is more akin to an entity outright buying out the market for any respective industry. Sony doesn’t have software money like the Xbox brand is backed by to buy up the gaming industry.
@munstahunta That is because everyone expects big blockbuster hits and graphics in a timely manner. Previous console generations had the big titles but many mid and low tier titles that broke even. Expectations of consumers and the bean counters is the blame for the game industry today. But the latter is more to blame I admit.
I'm not interested in a gamepass, digital only handheld from Microsoft. Microsoft stated that the next generation of Xbox will be the biggest generational leap. Which means that they will still have a stationary console. Unless they meant in the handheld space it would be the biggest leap. Handheld technology will always lag as its just a physic's and area issue for system on chips.
Perhaps the handheld can be for the xbox series s crowd and the alleged real powerful xbox can be for the home console crowd like myself. I think that a handheld xbox system should only be a supplement to a home xbox console.
@101Force developers would still complain if the PS and Xbox were using the exact same SOC. These days console manufacturers aren’t using custom bespoke hardware so the learning curve isn’t what it used to be. In which developers had to learn new codes and machine languages to effectively master a console. Since Xbox one and ps4 this hasn’t been the case.
@Yorozayu unfortunately many people hold DF in high regards. If DF complains about FPS, resolution, and graphics then many will carry that opinion. Even if the game is special and pushing boundaries. I find it funny how DF comments on trailers for new games and people covet that information. Personally I place more value on those than creative and not critics.
@AlwaysPlaying Yea it’s no big deal. Perhaps to those whom use gamepass and want to try everything they see like when at a candy store. I only install physical games that I am presently playing on my XSX. Which is only 1-3 at a time. Same for my PS5. It’s not a big deal.
@BAMozzy yup this is what I have been saying to people all of the time with each generation. This current generation is bad with this mindset because the last few years people are accustomed to remasters. Remasters of older games from previous hardware. So of course the new hardware can run it well. I knew once true current generation games came out that are ambitious developers would have to decide which direction they want to go. It’s the same for any console generation really. So nothing new. Problem is too many people follow critique outlets like digital foundry and think everything is unplayable if it doesn’t pass their 60 fps+ analysis for all game types. With that said I’m someone whom can easily see the difference with higher frame rates. It’s noticeable. However games from previous generations that were ambitious for the time that didn’t have great performance were never a problem for me. As long as they were playable. And yes you are correct people would complain if they reduced the graphics down just for the sake of FPS and resolution. Next generation of console 4K gaming will be better assuming 4K remains the target resolution. I also hope that Microsoft and Sony make truly powerful consoles similar to the X360/PS3 era. As considering inflation the consoles have been keep relatively weak just so they can keep the price in the same range more less.
@Kalele which is why physical game preservation is the only true way. As the digital crowd is beholden to MS and Sony hosting legacy games in their storefronts. Delisting happens all of the time due to licensing. Companies won’t continue to pay royalty fees indefinitely for several years. At least with physical games one can always play as long as the console medium is available or they can creat ISOs for emulators. No access to a digital storefront required.
@101Force price increase can be whatever they want it to be. As gaming is just a vanity hobby. It’s always been expensive one can say. Servers cost money to cool and it costs money to expand. Since these gaming companies want to force everyone to digital subscription services for everything costs will go up. I’d say the prices are so low considering all that one gets access to.
@PhileasFragg that’s because this generation is about going from 1080P to 4K. The power increase of this current generation is just for rendering at 4kish. So that’s why it’s not so noticeable. Contrast this to previous generations in which the resolutions largely stayed the same for several years.
Exclusives matter. Microsoft should be focusing on leveraging most of its studios to make great content for the Xbox going forward. With no cross platform releases for its big IPs.
@TheLastHarbinger I don’t understand peoples mindset with sharing is caring in terms of corporate IPs. Exclusives matter for console makers. Microsoft is in a position to be able to afford to be liberal with their IPs. If Xbox was its own division and not a subsidiary of Microsoft the context would be different. People aren’t entitled to hobbies which cost coin.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner oh I can definitely see the difference on my high end Sony OLED. My point is that it isn’t that big of a deal for the masses. As long as a game is playable, fun, and the controls are responsive.
@AlienigenX when the next generation of consoles arrives. All of the remasters will run at 60 fps and above! Then people will complain when a new ambitious Xbox Series XXX or PS6 title runs at performance mode 40 fps at 4K or 30 fps at 4K+. Modern gamers have such an entitlement. Contrast this to previous console generations when it was about the games and how fun their were. No one cared about outlets like DF which do their “analysis.” Then there is the cost and console gamers don’t want to pay too much for this hobby which hasn’t kept up with inflation.
@smoreon people underestimate and don’t understand how much power is required to run high resolution games at 60 fps. Especially games with a high a polygon count which many expect. Console gamers complain about the cost of their boxes which to be honest haven’t kept up with inflation. So the manufacturers try to do the best they can which is why in recent years the consoles have been mid tier at best. Whereas PS3/X360 and before had more bespoke SOCs that were impressive for their times. So there is many trade offs that console manufacturers and developers must consider.
And so what?! Ambitious games for current hardware always push the boundaries. Especially if developers want to stick to their ambitious plan for any title. Now of course they could scale back many things if they wanted. However they obviously didn’t want to. It’s really not that big of a deal. Console games throughout the generations were able playable games that were fun/cool. People didn’t place value on things like FPS which critique outlets like DF only like to talk about. I hope the game does well for Xbox and leads to more sells of the console.
@Kalele and by then it be impressive since it is made for current hardware. An ambitious title on the new hardware if developers stay with their vision will also likely be 30 fps. Which is typical for big console titles which push the boundaries. Nothing impressive about current hardware or new hardware running old software.
@OldGamer999 ambitious titles for any current console generation are always a challenge. People only care so much about fps since most are accustomed to remasters over the past few years plus DF’s “analysis” (criticism) of titles which is very popular.
@KillerBoy 30 fps for ambitious new console titles is the norm across all console generations over the years. 60 fps is possible if developers drastically scale back their ambitions. Then console gamers would complain about the lack of “next” gen feel or look. Or console manufacturers can release high end bespoke hardware but that won’t work either because of costs that console gamers will complain about. Then will all the power console developers could be even more ambitious thus resulting in the same issue. So it is up to console game developers how they use the resources and what priorities they have for their titles. 30 fps isn’t a problem for most gamers throughout all generations if the game is good. Now for the DF YouTube crowd then sure it can be a problem.
@evan23 yes the vast majority of people won’t notice. Critic outlets like digital foundry are partially to blame for making fans only care about such minor issues. Whereas in previous generations it was all about games quality. Not how many polygons are present, FPS and resolution. Perhaps DF can aide these developers with optimizing their code. That would be much better value IMO.
@Phil-Spencer-Gate I’m the exception but I only buy movies on Blu-ray if I want to watch something. The quality on 4K ultra’s for audio and video cannot be matched by streaming services. For those of us that have home theater and a good TV, physical is a must. Of course for most compressed formats work just fine through streaming.
I digress, I know GP is a good value for many whom don’t want to spend much coin on the hobby that is gaming. The Xbox subsidiary can get away with the subsidized GP model. I believe that this model isn’t good in the long term for the gaming industry. I’ll continue supporting developers by buying games outright physically for as long as I can as I believe in the ownership model.
@BAMozzy I understand the technicality. I’m saying I don’t want to be part of gamepass at all. Even if Xbox Live was one dollar less or the same cost I’d go with that service. Just because I don’t believe in the subsidized GP service. I do recognize for many that it is tremendous value on the surface but beneath it all, however it’s not good in the long term for the industry IMHO.
@Phil-Spencer-Gate well they got rid of Xbox Live so GP numbers aren’t impressive to me. All I want to do is play some games online with my Series X. I don’t care about GP as I only buy physical for the consoles. But since they got rid of Xbox live, I’m forced to get GP and am a part of that ecosystem or total. I don’t believe in the subsidized GP model.
Translation, the bean counters just want more money from royalties. Like any third party developer would want. The mindset is different for those that want to promote their own platform. The only console Gears should be on is the Xbox.
@HonestHick Nope. You are mixed up about Standards, IPs, and devices. The DVD format is a standard. Companies whom own IPs can choose to put their product on it. Just as gaming studios can choose to put their IP on a particular platform. Xbox, PS and Nintendo aren’t standards. They are just devices or brands like a car company.
Clever marketing as they forced us all to get game pass. I only wanted Xbox live to play online as I don’t care for the subscription model for video games. But I’m forced to buy game pass to play online with my friends. I reckon there are many in my shoes as well. Microsoft can afford to pay off developers for game pass.
@StonyKL which is why I continue to buy only physical media for the consoles as I prefer indefinite ownership which is what physical ownership provides. I do the same for all blu-rays since the audio and video quality are better, plus I won’t have to deal with censorship.
