I am amazed they got it running on Switch period. This is a great example why Switch 2 is coming — as we move to current gen porting to Switch is more expensive and not everyone can/will do this.
These kinds of CEO comments aren’t news, but damn they get engagement.
It’s a stupid comment too bc (1) first-party Playstation games are headed to Windows PCs after a year and (2) the argument that third-party companies shouldn’t get a choice on where they dev is insane. Go complain about not getting the new Zelda game, Microsoft.
I think arguing about CoD needing to be multiplat may be a smart legal or financial strategy, but … it sounds dumb to me. I am fine with CoD being Xbox only. I am fine with console exclusives and having CoD off PS would make my Playstation experience better.
Ten years is a long time but I don’t see any reason we wouldn’t have consoles in ten years.
Yes, I do see more trickle down where portable systems like Switch or Steam Deck become “good enough” for many console-like games but the gaming market is massive and will continue to grow for another 30-40 years at least from demographic changes and international growth. There will be a market for millions of consoles in 2030 as long as there are good games for it. Same for any other gaming system.
@Whybox The Vita was ahead of its time, but we’ll see what’s what when they launch. I hope Sega has optimized it all and they and P5 run great on every system. If Switch can run Witcher 3 at almost 30fps locked it should be able to run P3/4/5 easy.
@Whybox that would be fun, but I think we just need basic facts. As has been said these are all old gen products and should run great on everything. But — but as an example— P4G has a known stutter before all out attacks on pc and it’s not clear why.
Without more detail, this story asks more questions than it answers. Good questions about feature parity, resolution and frame rate from several commentors.
The future of consoles — and dedicated gaming hardware — seems brighter than ever. It was bold in the early 00s when Nintendo chose to sell an underpowered console with gimmicks but they’ve been doing that successfully for almost two decades now.
The tech for a mid gen refresh isn’t there at any reasonable price point. The existing hardware on XSX and PS5 is stellar.
Yes, UE5 at 4k60 sounds great, but that is up to Epic at this point. It’s not clear existing top end pcs can do it with both Nanite and Lumen running. Shrug.
Nope. This gen is going to last a decade. You will get a refresh — maybe cheaper, slimmer — but 2025 the earliest imo. It’s been current gen for 1.5 years and we still have availability issues.
@nofriendo I played it for 5 minutes and quit. At the first package delivery I tried walking into the backyard and got warped back to the truck. I decided the walking was too slow to bother delivering it again. Closed it and opened Unpacking. Apparently I have a patience issue, but Unpacking was delightful.
It was fantastic. The challenge for AAA games involve simplifying the creation pipeline — for Epic their vision is not making devs have to spend as much time on lighting or LOD. And in this iteration, making generative worlds and modifying as needed. Epic still has some issues to solve (locked 30fps, demo something at 60fps running Lumen&Nanite, animated/deformable meshes). But even with all that, they just showed off something that looks like a movie on a $500 gaming box. And it’s not a precanned animation: it’s a game with sound, physics, animation, interactivity and you can play it. Good show.
@Tharsman I think your argumentation is misplaced. PS5 runs the game slower, yes, but that isn’t preventing anyone from anything. What is holding things back is the amount of dev resources they want to put into the ultimate edition, not the “other team’s” hardware. As said in the DF video they could lower the resolution or use VRR and it would be fine on either system. They could customize the modes per system too. It just costs to do that. It’s a bit disappointing they didn’t/probably won’t as the Performance mode fps are just so much better for this kind of game — for me — ray tracing is out.
I think it looks off putting. I was surprised how empty the world looked. I don’t like to just criticize games. Having played the original and Stardew I wonder if they would be better served just making a 2d game with sprites. It’s not clear what the 3d is getting them. The lighting and textures make the game look cheap. Like there are many “free” games that look much much better. Hmm... Maybe with a better lighting model (pathtracing on XSX?) it wouldn’t look so depressing to my eye.
I think the problem is that 20 years ago the console war trolls would have had to handwrite letters to a publisher. You would not even know they exist. They would never be published, They would be isolated and alone and surrounded by more moderate publishable opinions that would pull them back to the center. Now anyone can write and controversy and extreme opinions get ad revenue. So here we are.
lottery systems and/or registered mail or in-person only reservations with some kind of global address verification so one household really is limited to one console. (or something like that)
It would be nice to have 4k and there doesn’t seem to be a technical reason why not. So maybe for a future update? I would prioritize HDR and 120fps UI over 4k. But that’s how I feel about games too. Upscaling works really well.
@TimG13 nope! just like we couldn’t do 480p when we tried for 1080p. The world is a very big, very weird place. 8k will be a nice feature for porting over iOS and Android games, for 2d indie adventure games, etc. 8k is the future and.. if I have to guess it will happen faster than you expect with DLSS 3 and larger screens becoming common (native 1440->8k upres would be my guess). And it’s cheaper to scale up more pixels compared to actually making nicer screens with real HDR so expect the tv market to go there in the next few years.
Yes, 8k. I want to see indie games in 8k and ultra crisp 2d artwork in 8k. I want VR titles in 8k. I want remasters in 8k.
This article and the responses are conflating technology progress and standardization/commoditization. They are related but not the same. Most games this next gen would/should run between 1080p and 4k. I expect 1440 to be normal. But it’s so silly to say that because MOST games will run that way then ALL games should.
has anyone here coded a ray tracing engine? Do you understand what you are asking for when you say you want or expect 4k 60fps raytracing at a sub $500 price point? I mean you can have it, if you are ok just playing tabletop pool simulators... I don’t think you know what you are saying.
@graysoncharles exactly. If getting a certain fps is a red line condition they should be on PC where they have control over that. Otherwise, everyone should just focus on what games they are looking forward to. And I would like to see mods and gaming websites using their power to make the community less toxic. It’s so weird that for 30+ years there are these nasty pervasive screeds about which system is more powerful. Is it just to get clicks to run ads? Why is this acceptable? Can you imagine how many people leave your site and never return because of hostile ***** like this?
(Aside: Can you imagine a drawing a line in the sand on any previous generation and saying if it can’t run 60fps or do trilinear filtering or pick x graphical feature then that game or system shouldn’t exist? That is insane. That rules out almost every game and every system ever made, period. Yet here we are still in 2020).
better headline: “developer thinks others should do what he did”
Seriously please gaming sites stop amplifying the nonsense bro culture (esp you IGN) in gaming. It’s a computer. Devs will do whatever they want with it. You will still have 10fps games on XSX and horrible bugs.
