@Kaloudz that's the whole point of these laws. It's to benefit the consumer. It's also makes Microsoft fight for your cash so they will no longer get to be complacent at least when it comes to selling games on its next gen hardware. If the rumours are true that it's a hybrid PC.
@HonestHick that's it. Having a knowledge of how businesses work helps have an insight into there mindset. I asked a colleague who is self employed about anti trust regulation during the ABK merger & again recently with talk of Steam on Xbox.
@HonestHick It kinda reminds me of the days when people laughed at David Bowie when he called the Internet the biggest disruptor of information in a generation. When people laughed that Netflix would ever take off in a world dominated with cinemas & video stores. Now it's the thought that the trusted formula of games consoles is slowly being replaced.
@Fiendish-Beaver Microsoft wasn't forced to put Horizon on rival consoles when they made Lego dlc. Even Nintendo wasn't forced to put Lego City: Undercover game on other platforms when it released on WiiU. But Sony does 😆😆😆.
From what Guerilla Games said at the time. It sounds like it was a joint decision. So Sony was very much involved in the decision. That's why I said it's release should put this argument to bed. As it goes where it believes the most money is. Even if it puts other platforms priority over its own.
@Kaloudz Xbox is heading to be a digital only platform. That's been obvious for years. So rival store fronts is a must. To comply with worldwide anti trust regulations. Just need to look at how new laws have forced Apple & Google to open up to competition in the smartphone market.
@Fiendish-Beaver yes Helldiver's 2 is a live service game. But its also PlayStations biggest selling game that they ever released at launch. So it's a big deal for PlayStation. So to bring it's biggest selling title to Xbox first to test the water. Is also a risk. As if it fails to shift units. How long do they support the port. So you'd expect lower risk titles first. But if successful then everything else after that is a bonus for Sony. They did it before with Horizon which was there biggest selling new IP. As it was PCs first PlayStation port. Square Enix just did the same lately also. They brought there money maker first with Final Fantasy 14. Then said they were happy with how it did & now get we regular releases yearly. Plus you'd think that Lego Horizon Adventures on the Nintendo Switch would have put this argument to bed when Guerrilla games was heavily involved.
@Fiendish-Beaver many of us said this was happening. Not just due to Xbox. But due to the nature of capitalism. Once the expansion begins & the money flows. The genie is out of the bottle. Then it rarely closes. Once one revenue stream is exhausted. It's the constant look for the next.
Plus Sony has been hinting for a while that something had to give. They put all there eggs in live service & failed. So they adapted by expanding to what made money & that was porting to other platforms.
@Kaloudz if it's a hybrid PC. I wouldn't think long. As there is nothing stopping Sony from adding its current PC ports to the Windows store now. To take advantage of the Xbox Asus Rog Ally X. Then update them later to take advantage the next gen console.
@HonestHick your getting the credit you deserve. You put all the dots together & told them to brace themselves. It not your problem they didn't listen.
@HonestHick im sure we talked about this subject back in February. The kickback on YouTube has been hilarious. In a way it's karma. But your living up to your screen name. Your just being honest 👍
I wonder if Xbox is getting fair games & that other Bungie game that they took in house last year. Sure it was rumoured to be an Overwatch clone. Even Gran Turismo 7 is a live service game. I read also that Sony said that 40% of this years 1st party revenue is from its live service titles. So would explain why they are looking at Xbox & Switch 2.
@WildConcept6 that definitely could have some merit. Now that Xbox is a Playstation partner. If console hardware becomes less important after next gen. I could see both Playstation & Xbox looks out for each other to compete against it's online competition. So games coming to Xbox could be part of a long-term partnership.
@TrollOfWar I'm sure Playstation will promote their own cloud services. As at the moment they offer 4k streaming to Xbox's full HD at 1080p. But during regulator scrutiny of the ABK deal. Sony was also afraid that if unregulated that Xbox could be untouchable with it's xcloud services in the future. I don't see that attitude changing now that Xbox are putting their services on every device possible which is Microsoft's key strength being a software company first. So if Sony is correct & Xbox does take a reasonable chunk of the market in the future due to having a head start with it's multiplatform strategy. Then Sony still gets a large chunk of revenue from it's own titles on Xbox while it makes money off its own online services.
Also Playstation wants it's own PC & mobile stores to bring in new revenue streams. So by bringing their titles to Xbox they instead of treat them as a rival. They become an ally. As Xbox is likely to support with their services to help Sony compete with it's rivals. While it also makes money off it's rivals services.
As Phil Spencer has said several times that they don't class Sony as a rival. More Apple, Google, Amazon & Tencent.
@WildConcept6 I'd say you just have to look at Bethesda's decision to force Arkane Austin to make Redfall an online title. As an example to self sabotage to a studio. Or the MMO that Phil Spencer loved & had to be torn away from or he'd he'd missed a meeting. Being cancelled. These companies will follow trends to make money. It is the name of the game for these corporations. So cutting jobs in one studio to protect others in another isn't unheard of. Then you have Microsoft's love of AI also. But I agree with what you wrote 100%.
@Fiendish-Beaver I think Sony is banking on Xbox to be a major player in the cloud gaming sector in the next few years. With there recent push to be on smart TVs, fire sticks. Xbox wants a mobile store on IOS & Android. We also have full cloud support for purchased games later this year to compliment Games Pass titles. All this opens the floodgates to millions of users who wouldn't touch a console. I can't see Sony not wanting a slice of that cash. Even if it's just 70%. Then add the 30 million Xbox console users also.
@WildConcept6 how is it major tin hatting. It's business. EA tried to force Sega during the Dreamcast days to drop its sports titles. Then again later. By successfully making Microsoft sell studios that made sports titles to Take 2 in return for support. This could be no different. If Microsoft has no faith in Forza Motorsport as an IP & can get Gran Turismo instead. I bet they would.
@Kaloudz I wonder if Turn 10 got hit as hard as it did because Microsoft was aware of PlayStation's new strategy & hope that with it may help bring Gran Turismo to Xbox.
@Fiendish-Beaver I'm no doubting the Switch 2 will sell more than the Xbox Series in a short time but by that time. The game will be old news. most sales are within the first 6 months. Plus the CEO is rather short sighted when Microsoft plan to allow all games sold via the Xbox store to be playable via cloud gaming later this year. They want Microsoft to foot part of the bill. As he said earlier this year they could close due to poor reviews. Before back tracking.
@Fiendish-Beaver it can't be install base as they mentioned Switch 2. It has a smaller install base than the Xbox series. Due ato it just being released early this year. The fact they want to discuss with Microsoft makes me think they want them to foot part of the bill.
@abe_hikura maybe licensed single player games like Spiderman, Miles Morales, Spiderman 2 & Lego Horizon Adventures due to there age. As I can't see them making much money now on PS5, Switch & PC? But could get a slight boost if they hit Xbox.
It be nice to see Horizon, Days Gone & the Last of US on Xbox. As I reckon they'd sell well if priced correctly. But guess we'll need next gen Steam access for those. But anything is possible after yesterdays announcement.
@HonestHick I can't wait to see all those games announcements in June. Maybe the trackpad will get more love now that the Switch 2 has mouse like features. But I agree it's rather pointless & is a gimmick. I don't like the Playstation Network also. Basic tasks that take a couple of buttons on Xbox are overly complicated like game chat on Playstation.
@HonestHick I had the worst timing as I bought mine specifically for JRPGs from the likes of Square Enix. Then they announced Final Fantasy 14: Realm Reborn a couple weeks later for Xbox. For comfort the PS5 controller is better than 4's. But far to many gimmicks as not a fan of the haptic feedback. Xbox's is still king for me. Aye the live service push has crippled them to the point if we get 3-4 new games id be happy.
@HonestHick my PS5 feels like a wasted purchase at times due to the lack of 1st party new games. Hopefully we see some good games over the summer. Plus Ghost of Yoeti later though.
@HonestHick I think Microsoft realised early on during the Activision Blizzard acquisition that large concessions were to be made & it has seen the benefits of those concessions specially in a digital only future. The expansion in areas like cloud to rivals, going fully multiplatform also help for future acquisitions. Sony needed to diversify. As their single player games only bring in money for short periods. Where as Microsoft has online games that can bring in cash for years if successful.
@HonestHick the EU has already ruled on it. They have already named Apple, Google, Amazon & Microsoft as "Gatekeepers". So all of the above have had to alter their business accordingly to the EU's findings.
It wasn't the 30% cut that landed them in trouble. That's perfectly legal. It was that the above wouldn't allow developers/publishers to advertise/sell their products externally in which to avoid it. Denying customers better choice of pricing.
Microsoft is in a unique situation that one of the toughest regulators fully investigated their business. So all Microsoft & Xbox has to do is work with the lawyers & work through a checklist of do's & don'ts.
Your argument is sound. Microsoft will paint themselves as the good guys but in reality they have been forced in this direction.
@Titntin your right laws do work. The only problem is that these cases take so long. So they will milk it while they can. I bet the lawyer's looked at the complaint & got a copy of the brief passed it onto SIE. Then recommended changes. Like Steam coming to Xbox. I bet everything that Xbox announces for the next gen Xbox will follows the EU's Digital Markets Act report. So better competition, better privacy, more freedom for the consumer.
@LogicStrikesAgain the game plan is that Microsoft had their business investigated by the EU under the Digital Markets Act. They were found guilty. Named as a gate keeper & were forced to change parts of the Windows 11 OS. Xbox was also investigated. Everything Microsoft is doing is pointing to that Xbox will be all digital. So they are following the recommendations & approved findings of the EU investigation.
@Titntin I'm just telling you what's been reported. Maybe Sony has relaxed there rules since they are under investigation. My work sells digital game cards for certain Xbox & PC games but none for Switch or Playstation.
Looking it up. It says Sony is being investigated for refusing the sale of full digital game downloads to retailers. The concern is that it's crippling competitive pricing & forcing PlayStation digital users to pay unnecessary higher costs.
@LogicStrikesAgain that's the joy of competition. Microsoft & Xbox will have to come up with fresh ideas & competitive pricing to make money. Again this isn't Microsoft being pro consumer either as this is the result of government regulatory processes cracking down on big tech like Apple, Google & Amazon. Who have crippled competition when possible. Rules like the EU's Digital Markets Act have the power to fundamentally change that balance.
@Titntin several regulators are already chasing Sony. The UK & EU are chasing them for breaking anti consumer laws when it comes to purchasing & refunding games on the Playstation store. They are also being investigated for refusing to allow digital game cards to be sold by retailers. I can also see Nintendo getting into trouble with Digital Key Cards.
@Cakefish the UK & EU are both investigating breach of consumer laws with purchases & refunds on the Playstation store. Nintendo could see themselves in trouble with there Digital Key Cards.
@Titntin the EU's Digital Markets Acts assessment of console gaming when they investigated Microsoft. Was that due to there being disc & cartridge slots available. It allows purchase anywhere. The report did say that if they are removed they'd reinvestigate due to concerns. Phil Spencer also said the day after the EU submitted the report that they'd like Steam on Xbox.
@Cakefish believe me. I bet Microsoft would love to have all the glory with the next Xbox. But like Apple & Google with IOS & Android. Countries & regulators are cracking down on big tech companies & forcing them to comply with anti competitive laws.
@HonestHick Xbox already runs Win32 C++. Due to it being part of the Universal Windows Program. Microsoft chose UWP over full Win32 as the later is heavier & requires an action centre. Where A UWP app installs like a phone app. As for compatibility with ARM. UWP apps are compatible & Win32 is emulated.
@sixrings because Microsoft & Xbox owns the platform. If the next Xbox console is an all digital system & only has the Xbox store as it's sole place to buy games then that be classed as a monopoly. Which breaches many anticompetitive laws. Apple has been forced to open up the app store to competitors under anti competitive laws in the EU, UK & a few Asian countries over the last few years. Microsoft themselves had their whole business probed by the EU's Digital Markets Act. They were found guilty for breaching competitive rules & had to change parts of the Windows OS to comply.
@Titntin if the next Xbox is digital only. Then Microsoft & Xbox will have to open the system up to competitors or they'll be breaking many anti consumer laws. I can see Nintendo getting into trouble with their digital key cards if reported to regulators.
