Helldivers 2 Is Officially Releasing For Xbox This August

Great news. I remember the devs saying that the decision to release this on Xbox would be up to Sony...

Who says it couldn't? It's not up to us but to Sony and Phil to duke out, but hypothetically speaking, if both partners think it would benefit them from a financial/brand standpoint, it could. If Sony believes it won't though, it won't

...so I imagine, given the online petitioning, they've seen it makes some sense. Looking forward to possibly giving this a spin when it arrives. It's not expensively priced, which is nice.

Is this...a sign of bigger things to come? Or just a one-off... Oh man this industry doesn't half keep us on our toes

@Coletrain i would assume until proven otherwise this is a one off for relationships with arrowhead and sony, or Sony just looking at live service and saying ok just put that mostly money pitt product everywhere

Already got it on PC so it'll be a pass for me.

@RagnarLothbrok the IP is 100% owned by Sony and Nixxes(Sony owned Studio) are doing the port, so it seems it is a Sony’s choice completely. Live service games getting late ports is potentially the norm now.

@RagnarLothbrok yeah that's what I'd assume too, especially with Marathon being multiplat. Still, is this historically the first time a Sony published game has been allowed on Xbox?(death stranding being a little different of course with Kojima getting IP rights)

People told me it would never happen but here it is. This will not be the last time playstation ports a game to xbox.

@BacklogBrad Exactly. There's a fair few of us here that called this a while back - saying that MS will be the first but not the last to go multiplat. It'll be interesting to watch the narrative unfold as and when that happens in the next year or so. Y'know, from the folks that said Sony will never release on Xbox.

@Kienda As far as games, Microsoft has more than delivered of late. In spite of the layoffs yesterday, they’ve had far more first party games than Sony in the past year and 40 more in the pipeline.

Good news for Xbox for a change! Hopefully, consumers will support this product because it’s worth all the money. They have been clambering for this so I hope they speak with their wallets.

I don't think this is a result of any deal, I think the consoles are simply in their final stages, I don't think there will be a new Xbox after the next Xbox, nor do I think there will be a PS7. These companies know this and are going to try to position their IPs as best they can for whatever comes next.

Xbox hasn’t “more than delivered,” in my opinion. Game Pass is still great value, that’s for sure, but it’s largely third parties for me that are doing that delivering. This game is a bigger draw for me than any Xbox first party game released this year.

I love my Xbox (I’m multiplatform to the core). But I cannot forgive some of these decisions. Them ending game production hurts us players. And it sucks big time.

Not on game pass. It will be interesting to see how well it does. I still think that game pass is great for gamers, but terrible for the industry.

I think when it comes to LS games, it makes a lot of sense for Sony to release them on Xbox down the line, it expands the user base and increases the chances of MTX spending.

I don't expect to ever see their single-player exclusives on Xbox (directly).

@Kienda For me they’ve been killing it. I’ve loved Indiana Jones, South of Midnight, Avowed, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black (yes this was published by MS and wouldn’t have happened without them), Oblivion Remastered and even the latest COD (campaign was great for once).

And that’s not even all that MS has published in the last year!

Fine for you to not like them but to say Sony is “delivering” with one game when MS has not is utter BS.

Clearly, Sony isn’t delivering for Xbox while Xbox does nothing but this game is a big W for Xbox players that is delivered by Sony and it is at a time when Microsoft have royally ****ed up by cancelling two amazing games and decimating their studios.

I’m not going to ever give Microsoft any credit for doing that. They have to be called out. It’s NOT good for us as players.

Now, are Xbox players getting value. Of license. And Oblivion for me is the best thing Xbox has delivered this year. And that beats this game for me (thanks for the reminder).

But Xbox getting a few good games out isn’t them winning at this industry. There is a good reason why Xbox console sales have tanked. There is a good reason why many Xbox first parties have fallen flat (barring a remaster and CoD).

Microsoft has to do better.

It’s honestly great news, but it isn’t what people think it is, Arrowhead, the developer that isn’t owned by Sony pushed for the game to launch everywhere since the very beginning and it seems Sony finally caved and decided it’s worth seeking as much audience as possible for their only successful live-service game as player count continues to drop and amidst their other failures with live-services, point is don’t expect to see God of War or Spider-Man on Xbox anytime soon or ever.

Sony should be doing this with all of their live service games as the more players there are the better although that probably wouldn't have saved Concord 😅

It's so obvious how this is an attempt to distract from the massive layoffs and firings of various teams and companies under the Microsoft Gaming brand.

I mean yeah, I guess I'm excited this game is coming to Xbox but gross how obvious this is the candy to dangle in front of fans to distract them from the ugly business practices of this massive company that only wants profits.

I have a PS5, and a very good gaming PC, and a Series X, where would I be best to play this? Also, does it have any single-player component? Can it be played with just 2 people, or are there many more people required? I've had a passing interest in the game since it launched, but now it's been out for a while, and has has a lot of updates, is it a good time to play it...?

I'm just gonna sit here patiently and wait for the locust swarms and raining frogs........ seems appropriate considering

@IronMan30 I think Sonys multiplat strategy will very much start with the live service titles to begin with though.

It's strategically at least easier for MS to take all first party multiplat as they have the day one on GP value card to play with it.

I can't see for example the big budget single player titles for PS5 going to Xbox. Not this gen anyway.

@Kienda I disagree. I think they've had an outstanding year. Sure, they've laid off this week, but that doesn't change an absolute thing as far as I'm concerned.

@Coletrain We're past a "sign of bigger things to come" MLB the Show was already the first Sony first party published and developed game that game to Xbox in 2021, and it didn't just come to Xbox but it was a day one game pass game. MLB the Show doesn't even have a native PC version to date. Yes that was due to heavy influence from the license, but it still was a MASSIVE shift. Up until then the game had been a full PS exclusive since like 2006. Then we got games like Death Stranding that were formerly published by PS as partner studio exclusives and came to Xbox under a different publisher. All the while Playstation started putting more games on PC and even Nintendo Switch. Looking beyond Playstation, virtually every publisher is pursuing a multiplatform strategy. Games are trying to reach as many gamers as possible as 1) console market growth slows and gamers remain happily fixed on their platform of choice and 2) games skyrocket in development costs. You could also argue that 3) competing with massively successful multiplatform live service games makes a multiplatform approach almost necessary for multiplayer games to be as successful as possible in that space.

The entire industry is trending away from exclusives. Xbox has easily benefited the most from this this generation. There are so many games that are finally on Xbox or series which have forgone exclusive launches to instead be day and date everywhere. The fact that Playstation themselves are publishing this and this is an IP they have full control over makes it pretty clear where things are headed. Sony will drag their feet and they will do their darndest to make sure that they don't look as weak as Xbox when porting games, but it not only is happening but it has already been happening. Heck, Sony bought Bungie specifically hoping to grow on all platforms with live service. Of course Bungie did NOT pan out, but regardless the Sony owned Bungie is still supporting Xbox with Destiny 2 updates and is planning to release Marathon day and date on Xbox....ya know assuming Marathon gets released anywhere.

They have had a good year in respect of games, @Kaloudz. I'd argue not so great in terms of consoles (good luck finding one, for example!). However, in terms of it affecting you it has affected you because you will not be getting some of the games you would have otherwise got, such as Perfect Dark, for example.

Plus, if I remember correctly, you are keen on playing State of Decay 3, which has been missing in action for a while now, and, much like Perfect Dark, only released what basically amounted to a proof of concept trailer, so who is to say that that game is not next on the chopping block?

So yes, in terms of games in your hands right now, you are unaffected, but in terms of what you would have received, you are very much affected (particularly because you don't buy games, only play them on the Game Pass, where these games would have released)...

@RagnarLothbrok It's so strange because Sony refuses to let even Everybody's Golf, Lego Horizon, or Patapon come to Xbox, even though they're multiplatform. Also the Ape Escape mode in MGS Delta is not on Xbox.

And yet in spite of that, they do this.

Sony putting other titles on Xbox is a matter of when, not if. If you seriously think that multiplatform ISN'T the way that the industry is headed, then I assume you believed Phil Spencer when he said "it's just four games."

PD looked great, but according to word on the street, what we saw wasn't even real. If the game could have looked like that, then yeah, it'd have been nice to play - but I'm not going to cry over losing something I never had...

As for SoD3, I think that team has only had a slight trim. Which I'm guessing is due to the game being closer to release than we think - likely before the end of 2027. Otherwise, if the game was several more years out - I'd expect the whole studio to be on the chopping block too.

I could be wrong, but that's what makes the most sense to me. So while I see your point about it potentially affecting me as a consumer, it's a mere drop in the ocean as far as I'm concerned. Life goes on

Sorry, @WildConcept6, but I think your are extrapolating too much here.

When it came to MLB The Show, Sony were facing one of two alternatives; keep publishing the game by allowing it on the Xbox, or cease publishing the game because the licence was going to be withdrawn if the game didn't release on the Xbox.

When it comes to Death Stranding. Sony were the publisher only, and I would put money on it that the only way Sony could secure exclusivity rights for the sequel was to allow the first game to release on the Xbox. It was either agree to that, or the sequel would release on the Xbox without any exclusivity on the PlayStation. Thus Sony opted to allow the first game (which was a few years old by then) on the Xbox so as to ensure the sequel was exclusive to the PlayStation for a least a year or more.

When it comes to Marathon, that decision is completely out of Sony's hands. It was part of the pre-nuptial agreement when Sony acquired Bungie that all future games would be multi-platform. So again, that isn't something that Sony would have happily agreed to, they were contractually obliged to do so.

And now, with Arrowhead, Sony are aware that Arrowhead have said that the money that Arrowhead made from Helldivers 2 has been sufficient to enable Arrowhead to self-publish their next title. Thus, Sony are taking a wise approach for two reasons, firstly, live-service games, by their very nature, need as many players as possible to make money and keep going, so adding in Xbox will help with that, and secondly, and most importantly as far as Sony are concerned, remaining on good terms with Arrowhead means that there is every possibility that whatever Arrowhead makes next will be exclusive to PlayStation. Pi... er, annoy Arrowhead, and Sony may lose that bargaining chip.

Ultimately, none of this is by Sony's choosing, and it does not affect future games, this is basically Sony having little say in the matter(s)...

@Kienda Xbox as a publisher has been amazing this year and we haven't hit the July Tony Hawk release. Avowed, South of Midnight, Oblivion, and Doom the Dark Ages. Even if only Oblivion scratched an itch for you all of them were at least we'll regarded (some extremely well) and enjoyed by many players. I'll say my favorite this year (like one of my favorite gaming experiences period) has been South of Midnight. This isn't even including the stellar latter half of 2024.

I don't give Microsoft or Sony any credit; they are both soulless publicly traded for profit businesses. The only thing either care about are profit margins and keeping shareholders happy. But I also don't let that reality taint my experiences and when I just enjoy something. Microsoft's layoffs suck for the people involved, but are also nothing new to the industry. Canceled games and lost talent are never positive stories, but they also don't warp time and space and displace what has already been released. Xbox as a platform has been killing it since they hit their stride in 2024. Their first party output has been really consistently good of at least good quality and they've done a good job securing more and more third party support. The news this week doesn't change that. It wasn't that long ago that after the showcase and AMD announcement that Xbox gamers were riding a massive high. And also you're hyping up Perfect Dark a LOT, but I remember a lot of mixed feelings from the gameplay trailer. I had never heard good leaks or rumors about the initiative (I remember when they supposedly lose the game director and perfect dark got rebooted) and it's pushing 8 years since they were formed and started work on Perfect Dark. That's a long time and it seems the game still wasn't ready for release. I'm not even saying I like that the studio was closed and the game canceled, I don't. I'm saying... are you sure it would have been that good? Like I'm confused. Perfect Dark going to be the holy grail compared to the mediocre Doom the Dark Ages? Or literally any other Xbox game in this gen? Was it going to save Xbox which has just been bleeding out on the floor the past 8 years I guess waiting for Perfect Dark? I personally feel the loss of Everwild though, but I have to also be honest with myself. We never even got a gameplay trailer and it went radio silent. There was a non zero chance it never even existed.

I'm just saying it's not terribly that deep. Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox doesn't need to be a conspiracy about which company is worse.

Thanks, @Titntin. Yeah, my PC cost about £3600 (including the more recent upgrades) but I really don't enjoy playing on it. My PC is hooked up to my TV in the front room, and so I'm sat in an armchair when using it, so using a KB&M is not particularly easy for me. As you say, I much prefer my console when gaming, and Xbox is my natural home.

I only have the original base PS5, so there isn't really much to choose between that and my Series X. Long and short of it is that the I'll likely get it on my Xbox, though I'm not keen on playing with randoms, even less so if I need to speak to them...! 😂

@IronMan30 I agree industry is changing that way and very fast. But I think Sony can for now at least afford to cherry pick what they put out there. I think for MS their hand is a bit more forced. For now at least anyway.

@WildConcept6 The reality there is with Perfect Dark at least. A studio was created from scratch. Hyped up massively by people who were imo responsible for managing the studio and the project. Those people are still there. Those in the background working on it - gone.

It's a bitter pill to swallow for those guys when there is an argument those who are safe aren't really taking any accountability when it should have been on them to manage it in the first place.

The wider thing though can't argue. Xbox has been killing it and Xbox only gamers will still have enough to keep them happy. We called Sony out for how Bungie has been handled though. Got to do it here too.

The fact that Sony has little say in the matter is exactly why there are less and less exclusives period. Whether its third party publishers like Square publicly stating that exckusive deals are a mistake in this day in age or those like Sega making a statement for multiplatform growth (Yakuza and Persona weren't just exclusives, but system sellers almost seen as mascots for PS). Even Bandai is taking Digimon Story Time Stranger and releasing everywhere they can day one, when Cyber sleuth was a freaking PSVita exclusive at launch. Sony being told to put MLB the Show on Xbox (and even Game Pass), to keep the license IS SIGNIFICANT. From 2006 until 2020 (over a decade) the game's exclusive status, even after it was the only licensed MLB game, wasn't an issue. But all of a sudden it was and since then it expanded to both Xbox and Nintendo all while PlayStation develops and publishes. This shows that the companies who give out these licenses are wanting larger games that reach more gamers and as a result make more money. And this desire isn't slowing down and Playstation develops a non-zero number of licensed games. I would NOT be surprised if down the line Disney, being as money hungry as they are, tells Sony they'll have to release day & date on PC and later Xbox if they want to keep making Marvel games. What happens if car manufacturers tell Sony they want Gran Turismo multiplatform if Sony wants to bring licensed cars into the game? It sounds unlikely today, but so did the same logic for MLB the Show prior to the Xbox version. And previously partner published games wouldn't bother with an Xbox version after Sony's exclusive deal ended. That's also no longer the case. And it's really clear that Sony bought Bungie (for a pretty big sum of money) hoping to better compete in the live service market and that was a multiplatform endeavor (it seemed most akin to when Microsoft bought Mojang all those years ago).

@Fiendish-Beaver I mean we can kinda go back and forth on the idea of "extrapolating", because I'm not sure what else to call the Helldivers explanation. There's nothing in that explanation that changes the fact that it was Sony's decision (under whatever circumstance) to publish the game on Xbox. If anything your explanation highlights my point: Sony is losing control. The industry doesn't want exclusives anymore and the matter is quickly becoming no longer up to Sony. We are trending away from exclusives, that's a fact, and on Sony's part this trend is happening with or without them which is forcing them to play ball. They drag their heels on PC, but can't avoid that market anymore. They're willing to publish on the switch for the money. They, by their own admission, see Xbox as their biggest competitor in the console space and they see exclusives as how they compete. But they can no longer keep third party devs off of Xbox (as much as they did in the past) and they're being told by their partners that to even keep being able to make a game (MLB the Show) they have to publish on Xbox. And they've been forced to acknowledge that game development costs are increasing and their single player portfolio won't cut it alone, so they've ventured into live service and now own a studio (a first party studio) that supports a live service game on all platforms. Now on top of all that they're publishing a game they own and control the rights to on Xbox. The fact that they were strong armed into it by the situation is only more telling. People want to act like Sony is immune to the trends of the industry, but they aren't. Sony, as I said, is dragging their heels, but honestly all this means is that we'll see more situations like Helldivers and MLB the Show and all the former third patty exclusives where the decision is largely taken out of Sony's hands (either due to financial reasons or they are literally told to make XYZ game multiplatform). The behind the scene details don't change that once upon a time (as in like literally months ago) the idea of Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox was an impossibility. Now it isn't and this is not the first case of that. I'm not saying Sony is making these decisions out of the goodness of their heart, but that regardless of what Sony wants in their idealized world this is happening. Sony doesn't have as much power as they'd like to think and they are losing a lot of control. We can't keep moving the goal post in their favor and pretending the industry bows down to them. The industry bows down to gamers (and costs and really capitalism and shareholders, but that sounds way less empowering). Persona and Yakuza games day and date on Xbox were unfathomable. MLB the Show on Xbox was unfathomable. Helldivers 2 on Xbox was unfathomable. Yet it keeps happening. There's less exclusives than ever and less support for exclusives (from third party publishers) than ever. Will Sony suddenly support Xbox with every new release? Of course not. They'll keep dragging their feet and being Playstation. I'm not saying to expect God of War tomorrow or any other PS game on Xbox. I'm just saying that we can't ignore reality and pretend like every time one of these unfathomable ports happen, that they'll never happen again.

This one doesn't excite me much, but it's great for those who have been hoping for this on the Xbox.

I think we largely agree, @WildConcept6. However, I keep seeing people thinking that this means that Sony will release their first-party games on the Xbox. This is not that, and it does not mean that. This is where Sony has partnered with an outside developer (just as with MLB) and then having less say in what happens with the game.

As you say, we won't be getting God of War, etc., and so people need to reign in on their excitement because that will only lead to much disappointment.

Now, if the next Xbox is a PC with integrated Steam, then yes, maybe Sony will adjust their position. Thus, if a game such as the next God of War is going to release on PC a year after it releases on the PC, and therefore will be easily playable on the next Xbox, then I guess there is a chance that Sony will just bite the bullet and plop it on Xbox too. I don't think that is out of the question because, as you say, making games is now very expensive. However, I think that Sony will likely see how the next Xbox, and its PC-like nature, performs (financially) before they do anything quite so drastic as dropping their first-party offerings on the Xbox Store...

I was hoping but not expecting this to happen to be honest so I'm very pleased it's happening and I've pre-ordered it as I really wanted this on Xbox so glad I can finally play it there.

@IOI i do expect to see God of war on Xbox soon, it’s called Xbox console/PC hybrid. Steam is coming to Xbox, which means you can play GOW and Spider-Man. Sony knows this and they are ok with it cause it don’t hurt them, it only helps them get more eyes on their games. Windows is too big to not come to Xbox. With that coming so does just about every video games ever made not named Nintendo.

Very surprised with this news, I’ll definitely be buying it especially at £34.99 which is reasonably priced. I have a PS5 but not bought this game due to me using my Series X as my primary console for 3rd party and online, PS5 is used for just for single player exclusives.

Wow on the same day that Ross Scott's Stop Killing Games EU petition reached 1 million signatures, the Bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox petition also forced Sony's hand into bringing the game over. What a day.

Snark aside I will 100% be buying this, and huge congrats to Ross who's Game Dungeon videos are some of my favorites on youtube. His Veil of Darkness video is an all timer for me. If anyone can get the game industry to stop killing games, it's him. @FraserG it would be cool if this site covered it since it still needs more signatures to make up for any fake ones.

Awesome for the community to get more players, but I don't see this happening for anything that isn't multiplayer focused. I'd prefer to have online for my Series X but Game Pass Core is such a scam compared to PS Plus Essential that I'd rather re-buy games I already own on Xbox and ger re-released like Halo.

@Tasuki Fortunately, Helldivers 1 is completely unrelated to Helldivers 2 story-wise, so you won't be missing out on anything when it comes to the series' plot. It's also a pretty different game, too. Helldivers 1 is more of an indie game.

Great news! Xbox players get to play the game, more players get into the game ( I don't know how is the players count at the moment after 1 and a half year), developers get more earnings and sony as publisher goes to the right direction, getting more players and earn more. It's a win win for everyone

What's funny is my PC version is fully modded with everything replaced with Halo assets.

This is Sony getting ahead of the "nexbox can play steam/epic games" and getting some money before people play it through their existing library for free. Probably.

It's ironic that the best Xbox news this week comes from Sony.

@NishimuraX As someone not directly affected by the job losses its possible to be sympathetic to the folks who lost their jobs and still acknowledge that you enjoyed what gamepass released for the year so far. They are not mutually exclusive options.

@NishimuraX I've made my position on this matter very clear across these layoffs, and other layoffs. If I could fix their problems with a magic wand, I would. Do I care on an emotional level about people I've never met? No. That'd be strange.

My enjoyment for the games I play > random people.

I'm certainly not going to mentally scrub or mentally detox the great times I've had this year on the console over these job losses. It's a shame that this has to happen, but they're talented people and I'm sure they'll land on their feet.

@abe_hikura maybe licensed single player games like Spiderman, Miles Morales, Spiderman 2 & Lego Horizon Adventures due to there age. As I can't see them making much money now on PS5, Switch & PC? But could get a slight boost if they hit Xbox.
It be nice to see Horizon, Days Gone & the Last of US on Xbox. As I reckon they'd sell well if priced correctly. But guess we'll need next gen Steam access for those. But anything is possible after yesterdays announcement.

Hopefully a switch 2 port will follow also!

@cragis0001 it'd make the most sense to do that after the next gen hits. The important thing for Sony isn't the sale of these games on PS, its the perception that "all games" will come to Xbox. They need people to believe PS is where you need to be to play there games.

So if they wait until after the next gen starts ti start porting old games it just looked like an extention of their PC strategy.

@NishimuraX can’t release a game in 10 years. Microsoft was just throwing money into a fire with that studio. If they can’t get the job done than see ya. What makes devs more special than the rest of us? You don’t do your job you get let go. Just a fact of life for everybody.

@abe_hikura only time will tell I guess. But maybe it's just 2nd party games like Helldivers 2 & Stellar Blade to keep timed exclusivity flowing also.
