Re: Xbox Fan 'Shocked' That Latest First-Party Release Ships Completely On Disc

PhileasFragg

I think physical games are a lost cause now. With this age of constant patches and online play even if the game is on the disc there’s always downloads you need to play the game.

Plus now MS are adding non Game Pass games to cloud you can only play those if you have the digital version, and not a physical release.

Combined with the Xbox’s poor quality disk drive a physical game can become a liability.

Re: Warner Bros Games Revenue Declines By Almost 50% At The Start Of 2025

PhileasFragg

I’m surprised that they’re still in business as they’ve had a rough time for a while. With the rest of the company’s issues I’d have figured they’d have sold off their IPs for gaming or licensed them out. A more steady income or some quick cash flow.

I’ve noticed that more DC stuff has come back to Fortnite after a long while (with rumours of a Superman season). I think that’s a way to get some more income.

Re: Talking Point: If The Next-Gen Xbox Is More 'PC-Like', Will You Still Buy It?

PhileasFragg

I'd have to know more about what "more PC like" would mean. Console hardware has been becoming more like PC hardware for decades. I mean you can run Windows NT on a Gamecube.

The advantages of gaming PCs are the flexibility and upgrade potentials, but I don't think we'll see that in any future console as that defeats the point in many ways.

I think it'll end up being pretty much standard PC components running a special Windows version in a console looking box. That way it'd be cheaper and easier to make and program for.

Re: Fortnite Players Share Mixed Reactions As Xbox Cloud Gaming Adds Limit For 'Free' Users

PhileasFragg

I understand there's costs, but it's a free to play game. The point is making the costs of playing it back from players elsewhere. Something Fortnite has been VERY successful at.

I've played it on Cloud a few times as it's much better graphically than the mobile version, and I've not had any real issues with more lag than on console. It's a great way to play when traveling.

Re: Xbox Offering Special 'Upgrade' Deal For Early Access & DOOM Content In THPS 3+4

PhileasFragg

I say this every time, but I will never play extra to get "Early Access" to a finished game. The game is finished, it's ready to play. Publishers cash in on the hype by delaying their games a week to get more money out of people.

Don't pre-order. Don't pay for early access. Wait for release, and wait for reviews. See how the game lives up to the hype before you give them your money.

In these days of digital games you can do this all on the day of release with no downside. Get up in the morning, see the reviews and first impressions over breakfast. If you like what you see then you can decide to buy it, and you'll be playing it in a couple hours. If it turns out to be a real mess, or the servers are in shambles then hold onto your money.

Re: MachineGames Is 'Working On Some Pretty Cool Things' After Indiana Jones And The Great Circle

PhileasFragg

Interested to see what they do next. IJ was a big project for them so here's hoping they build off of that success. Another Wolfenstein game would be my desire, but if they have a good idea let them at it.

My only worry is if they get roped into doing a project they're not suitable for. Bioware and Arkane both had a reputation for story driven single player games, but got strongarmed into making online multiplayer shooters which flopped.

Re: Review: Avowed (Xbox) - Flashy Action & Excellent Exploration Make Up For A Surprisingly Breezy Narrative

PhileasFragg

This sounds good. I played the Outer Worlds, and really liked it. In part due to what you mention in the opening section. It was an RPG that got to the point, and didn't try and waste time and space building a gigantic world you walk right past.

Compared to when I was a kid I've got more disposable income (though not all that much these days), but less free time. So I don't need one game to last me from my birthday to Christmas.

I'm thinking about two big RPGs from last year: Baldur's Gate 3 and Starfield; both are massive games. The former with the broad scope of a TTRPG brought into a game, and the second with over 1600 massive planets to explore and build on. I've not finished either of them as I just don't have the time.

Re: Remedy Talks Upcoming Projects As Alan Wake 2 Finally Makes A Profit

PhileasFragg

Glad to hear it! I tried Alan Wake, and couldn't get into it, but loved Control and eagerly await more info on the next instalment.

I'm not too sure about FBC as that's quite a departure from their usual fare. It seems to be a bigger studio doing their version of the couple of popular SCP games made by small devs on PC. So it could work out, but not my bag.

Re: Roundup: The Early Previews Are In For Xbox's South Of Midnight

PhileasFragg

The previews I saw looked great. The visuals, style and story are definitely compelling. Though when it comes to the game mechanics that's something you have to play to know.

There's several games, Alan Wake for example, that I really love the presentation, but I had to stop playing as the actual gameplay didn't click.

Re: Xbox Praised For Putting 'Lots Of Effort' Into Store Curation Compared To Sony & Nintendo

PhileasFragg

I wonder how long this will last? The others don't have as stringent curation as it costs money at both ends. You need more people to do the vetting, and you lose out on sales of these slop games.

Is having a reputation for a well curated store front worth the cost when you're the ONLY storefront? If the Xbox store stunk you can't go elsewhere for games on Xbox. Same with the other platforms (Steam has a monopoly on PC).

At some point I fear this team at Microsoft will get cut way back, and the floodgates will open.

Re: Talking Point: What Would You Want From A New Batman Game?

PhileasFragg

@Markatron84 I hate to see game companies go under as it's the people who actually make the games who are hurt the most not the people who made the bad decisions.

That said WB games is really bad at their job. They need to fold, sell off their studios, and then have WB just licence their IP (which is all WB have going for them) to other developers. WB NEEDS quick cash and cost savings. So my money is on this happening within a year or two unless the parent company's fortunes turn around.
