Probably not exactly how Phil envisioned this going, but all this does circle back to his original promise of meeting gamers where they are. Could they have done better and have been more clear with their massaging? Absolutely.
If they have all this IP, some of which could sell well on other platforms, why not take the extra money it would make to funnel back into the XBOX brand? In an idea world, it should lead to more games and funds to invest in new hardware. It's the end of the day, as a company they have to do whatever is going to get them the biggest return on investment.
For the Xbox only crowd, they still get to play day one with GamePass Ultimate.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like MS just moved most of the points you would've gotten in the rewards app to the rewards hub instead? The rewards app gave you 2500 points every 10 weeks.
Just doing the math, the weekly conslole bonus still gives us 2500 points every 10 weeks, just in the form of 250 points a week for playing our consoles just 15 minutes a day for 5 days (the move was more than likely to drive gamepass engagement). The big loss with the move is the 100 point weekly task bonus. Instead of earning 1k every ten weeks, we are only earing 250, as you get 25 bonus points for being an GPU member. That's a loss of 750 points, the full 1K if you're not in GPU.
Of course we're also missing out on those other random offers like checking out a game on Youtube and other stuff that showed up that gave you 5-10 points here and there in the rewards app.
Granted the program is not as great as it once was, but it's still a fairly generous offering for doing what I'm already doing anyways... playing games. That's not even mentioning doing brainless tasks like searching for things everyday in bing/edge that takes all but 10 minutes of my time.
Probably not a great take, but for me even though they nerfed some things, they streamlined other things that makes earning points feel less of a grind than it has in the past.
@stylon you'd think with the extra paddles, one could at least map a couple of those as the screenshot/record buttons. Personally I bought the Chatpad for that function alone, being it has reprogrammable X1/2 buttons. The travel isn't idea and would have rather had them on either side of the numerical row as opposed to either side of the spacebar, but hey, it gets the job done!
So... All these people who are supposedly going to boycott and cancel their pre orders: You're not really helping your system of choice by essentially giving it one less copy sold, are you? Just saying.
Honestly, I didn't think it was going to be that big a deal to begin with and that the issue was being overblown. I'm pretty sure Sony was going to use the term in some sort of advertising campaign and highly doubt they were going to start issuing takedowns of LP'ers. Of course with any big Corp, I can see the concern, as what would stop them from flexing their trademark muscle.
EDIT: on second thought, I just went to the source link and woah, what was Sony thinking? I'll have to change my stance! Lol
@Utena-mobile good points. I always thought it was the explosion of the smartphone scene that killed the Wii and by extension the DS. Sure, motion controls are gimmicky and I don't think 3rd parties liked that too well (that's not even getting into tithe Wii being underpowered) but the iPhone came along and changed the game and took the "casual" market along with it.
There's probably some credence in Nintendo not knowing what made the Wii successful. Though I think the major difference is they clearly communicated and advertised what the Wii did and what it was about. Fast forward 6 years, and compare that with how they bungled the marketing and communication of the Wii U, you can see where some of their major shortcomings occurred. (once again, not getting into the power debate) but I'm with ya, I really want to see Nintendo doing well again. Heck I want to see Microsoft do better at this point. As someone who owns all three platforms, the landscape is much better when one isn't clearly dominating over the the others.
@KelticDevil we've all seen how things between Sony and Nintendo went back in the day but hey if that meant Master Chief in the next Smash? I'd be sold! Haha
@jongred agreed. I don't care to see anyone's games on competitor's platform (as it pertains to first party IP). I quite like things the way they are. In paticular, outside of saving some coin buying a second or third system, I'm not sure what some folks obsession is with Nintendo going multi platform.
Also, I don't get how the Wii was "lucky" or a "fluke" as if marketing and wide appeal didn't play into it's initial success.
@jasper81 yea there isn't much on there right now due to the BC being in beta, but I imagine the list will be much larger with the full launch on 11/12.
I know Phil or someone from XBox said that all the Games with Gold titles will be backwards compatible when the feature officially goes live. Though I was never clear on if that was retroactive and apply to past GwG titles.
@shonenjump86 I'm not sure how I missed Blazeblue for some reason I thought it was just on PS4, I'll have to pick that up. And worse, I own Mortal Kombat. Not sure why I whiffed on that one ha.
@shonenjump86 I'm hoping for some fighting games as well. Paticularly since it's an area the XBox One is severely lacking in. Correct me if I'm wrong, but what do we have? Killer Instinct, Dragon Ball Z and DOA? What am I missing? Unfortunately, fighting games are low on their voting site I'm not sure how much weight our votes get.
@BAMozzy I almost feel like November 12 is too soon. The Beta is getting better, but it's still a buggy mess not to mention laggy at times. A little over two weeks to go. MS has a lot of work to do.
I was sitting looking at the known issues screen for 30 minutes last night debating on whether or not I wanted to opt in, because I don't really mind the UI as is. But then I decided to opt in because I like living life in the edge. Haha. I just hope the others that use my XBox One don't mind the bugs.
Its interesting that MS is slowly returning to its 2013 commitments but semi-quietly.
Reading the article, I had the exact same thought, honestly I think this is away to test their original plan to see how it would take (if the rumours hold up as true) if it's priced right, I could see myself buying one or two, as I would be their ideal consumer. That sounds crazy, right? But hear me out.
Sans Dead Rising 3, I'm all digital. I would buy an XB1 mini for my room and for my travels, as I would be one sign in away from access to my One and 360 BC games.
Edit: A mini would probably have a niche market, but I think it could pull off a quite a few units. Obviously a cheaper steam route would be idea unless they just revamp their Deals with Gold program.
@TwilightAngel the Wii U version I would give a solid 8. It was a unique game in that it really showed off what you could do with the Gamepad. Perhaps it wasn't your cup of tea?
@II_Of_Seven that's exactly what I was thinking. I'd also imagine they don't want to put too much wear on a hard drive which isn't exactly user replaceable. Not to mention, depending on the compression format, a 1080p broadcast can eat up a lot of space. I remember when I had a TiVo and the transfers to my computer were pretty humongous.
I'm going to be working on my Kombat skills all weekend, so I can be prepared when I fully embrace online matches. I'll also try to dig into the other modes of the game, since all I've really done so far is story and training.
Man I forgot this game even existed. I've yet to see a TMNT game that's on par with the arcade games and for that matter the ports and sequels of those games on the home consoles.
On a related note, I was thinking just yesterday how awesome it would be if TMNT Tournament Fighters was revisited. It was a paticularly dense fighter, but I remember having a lot of fun with it.
@DRL I'm loving it so far for sure worth all the praise. Though I've only clocked in a couple hours myself. I spent the last week playing MK9 leading up to X to readjust myself from KI and most recently Street Fighter. So I've faired pretty well thus far. ☺
"In our first match, we were listening to what appeared to be a musician hammering a snare drum every four seconds with the back end of a didgeridoo whilst Dame Shirley Bassey stood in the corner picking biscuits from a tin, occasionally making satisfied "Mmmmm" sounds whenever she found one of her favourites. You'd have to bet that Bassey is a fan of Jammie Dodgers."
That was a very vivid description. That had me bust a gut in laughter this morning, which was quite frankly needed. Thanks for that. The game is pretty abhorrent. When booting a couple times it made this loud buzzing and popping sound whilst the screen going black and backing out to the dashboard which looped a couple times and forced me to manually quit the application.
I personally felt like no matter how hard or soft you hit the cue, it seemed the ball moved too slow and the collisions weren't very satisfying, not to mention the sound of contact was entirely too low (unless it was the music overtaking it) Also a missed opportunity by providing no rumble feedback. Unless I missed it somewhere in the menus.
After a few rounds I just left it on and running so at the very least I could earn an easy 1k in Xbox reward points...
It sounds pretty solid to me, being that I've yet to play any of those games save Black Flag, which coincidentally, I just re-bought on the Wii U over the weekend. This is my chance to finally experience Child of Light.
Honestly, I'd rather not use my OneDrive space for my music... I'd much rather have a solution like Google Music. Point to your upload folder. Match or upload x amount of music against the XBox Music database. Of course it's all pretty moot for me, being I just cast Google Music to the XB1 anyways.
@Tasuki @DRL I haven't played any of the Bioshocks, though I've heard good things about the series as a whole. Do I need to play the first two to understand what's going on in infinite?
@Emanouel right... I tried it when they had that free play weekend... It was 'meh' to me. Then again, that could be my bias for arcade type racers creeping through...
Whew! Good thing I didn't jump on that sale EA has on NBA Live this week for $40. I'd imagine when they refresh the sales (on Tuesday, I think?) that's when they'll add it to the Vault.
This might make me cave and finally get a Surface pro! Like @DRL, I'm sure to make use of this paticularly on my deck. Also it'd be great to just hook my laptop to the TV in my room and game from there. I wonder if Microsoft will eventually make use of "the power of the cloud" and make remote gaming possible, a la PS4 remote play?
Though the one thing Microsoft didn't make clear was the free upgrade to Windows 10. Is that to say they're going to turn Windows into a subscription service? Odin knows I don't need another one to keep track of.
@DRL I like the XB1's UI better. As cluttered as it can be and as unorganized as it can seem at times, It still feels more intuitive and cleaner than PS4. I have to agree about the overall presentation of things being better, not to mention I can find what I'm looking for quicker, as I can pin just about anything I want to the dashboard. Comes quite in handy for Netflix programs I want to watch later.
My main gripe is that I wish the music app didn't take a 1/4 of the screen, as during fighting and driving games I like my own soundtrack, but not at the expense of screen real estate. It would work better if it was a tiny overlay, IMO. Also, tile folders for the dashboard would go a long way to help keep things organized, paticularly if you're all digital like myself. I do think Sony is poised to have a major 2015, based off what they've shown off so far. They definitely have stuff that's on my radar, which I couldn't say that for 2014.
@Gamer83 I feel like the problem with the PS4 store is a carryover of the PS3 store problems? The times I went in it didn't necessarily black out on me, but it was kind of slow. Though as it stands, when I go into either storefront, I know what I'm looking for, so it's generally faster if I use the app. Though it sucks that it's basically just link to the Web Store. In comparison to Smartglass (or the ability to bing what I'm looking for), that's a step back.
@DRL it's almost easy to let the PS4 collect dust especially if you don't have a CEC equipped TV. If your TV is passing through your Xbox One, then all your games and entertainment is just a voice command (or few button presses with Kinect-less XB1ers) away. Outside of my friends being mainly XBL gamers, that's been part of the deciding factor when I'm choosing which system to buy my muti-plats for (unless there's a huge difference that would sway me to pick the PS4 version)
Also, I'm still enjoying the heck out of Sunset Overdrive!
@flameboy84 I wouldn't be surprised if screen mirroring was in the cards. After all, I'm sure it won't be too long before every region will have TV mirroring via Smartglass, it seems like gaming would be the next logical step. But yea screen mirroring is something that would definitely get me to invest in Windows 10 as well.
@EternalDragonX right. I just assumed perhaps you'd probably needed to own the game in the first place. Or at least have the disc you want to play in a registered Xbox. It would seem the ideal situation would be to have the game downloaded on your system to access it from anywhere else. Whatever the case, I'd envision it would be like PS4's remote play. I don't own a Vita, so I'm not totally sure how it works. I hear it kinda blows if you're not on your own network. Hopefully if this is what MS is working on, they improve that aspect.
Awesome. I was wondering when they were going to add new content. I was beginning to feel like my 30 bucks was going to waste. This is probably a game I would have never tried if it wasn't offered to me...
I would have rather had SFV, but I suppose this is the reason I invest in multiple systems. Though like someone said above, it wouldn't surprise me if MS just locks down Titanfall. Overall I just hope this doesn't turn into the generation of what's that term? Moneyhatting? There's gonna be a lot of sad one console gamers out there...
@Vincent294 correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't both Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros in 1080p/60FPS? (4 player split screen being the exception in the former)
@stylon from what it looks like, there will be modern controls, with an option to toggle to classic controls. But I feel you. Even today, when I go back to the older REs I'm like, "man, these controls are archaic... I can't even." lol
This is what I get for being an early adopter. I have The Evil Within and Titanfall and it's season pass (that's a steal!) I haven't bitten on The Walking Dead yet, so I may go ahead and pull the trigger on the bundle (puns not intended. Haha)
Due to a screw up at Walmart, I didn't get a Day One edition XBox One, but I did get one on launch. I surprisingly got a code for LIMBO, as did my sister whom I share my Gold with. I pretty much got everything that @mitcHELLspawn got except instead of the Sunset Overdrive Season Pass, I just got code for to unlock 7 additional items. I'm pretty jealous!! Haha. (maybe I'll get it in another email fingers crossed) for those who think they didn't get anything, be sure to check your console messages. I didn't know I got anything until my sister got a system message saying she got something, so I decided to check mine.
XBL rewards are hit and miss to me, but I generally make like a bandit when they have the "buy X amount in games, get X amount in points" Missions. I get stuff was going to buy anyways, so it works out for me in the end. I think I've earned at least $150 in rebates and rewards this year alone! I love Club Nintendo for the simplicity and all the cool stuff you can buy with your coins, but their rewards can be kind of iffy for the most part. I was really hoping they'd at least keep the Digital Deluxe Promotion alive after this year...
@EternalDragonX what set up are you using? I'm asking, because I've always been able to use my phone as a bridge between my XB1 and PC using PS3 Media Server, so I'm trying to figure out what's changed concerning the Media Player app. When I launch it, it sees PS3 Media Server, but none of the folders it's sharing.
I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure it out. Unless I need to use a different server like Plex or something...
Sunset Overdrive is the one I'm excited about the most, but I'm picking up both of The Walking Dead. I'm for sure picking Killer Instinct 2 and I'm on the fence about Alien, The Evil Within and WWE 2k15, I'm with @sinalefa as the games two October games I'm really excited about isn't on the list.
My backlog is ridiculously huge, and it looks to get larger by the end of this year! So many games, too little time!! Lol
Sadly, my copy is still sitting on my hard drive, just waiting to be launched. Work for the past few weeks or so has kept me from sinking any substantial amount of time into playing anything, save quick bursts of Super Time Force... Hopefully this weekend will be kinder to me...
That makes me kind of sad. I bought it during the gold sale... Though it basically a wash for me, given that I got a $27 credit at gamestop for my hard copy which was my intention in the first place.

Re: Xbox One Leads In Monthly Sales for December in US
@DRL it's almost easy to let the PS4 collect dust especially if you don't have a CEC equipped TV.
Re: Microsoft's Windows 10 Event Could Be More Tied to Xbox Than You Think
@flameboy84 I wouldn't be surprised if screen mirroring was in the cards. After all, I'm sure it won't be too long before every region will have TV mirroring via Smartglass, it seems like gaming would be the next logical step. But yea screen mirroring is something that would definitely get me to invest in Windows 10 as well.
Re: Rumour: Microsoft Working on Game and App Streaming Tech Named Arcadia
@EternalDragonX right. I just assumed perhaps you'd probably needed to own the game in the first place. Or at least have the disc you want to play in a registered Xbox. It would seem the ideal situation would be to have the game downloaded on your system to access it from anywhere else. Whatever the case, I'd envision it would be like PS4's remote play. I don't own a Vita, so I'm not totally sure how it works. I hear it kinda blows if you're not on your own network. Hopefully if this is what MS is working on, they improve that aspect.
Re: Rumour: Microsoft Working on Game and App Streaming Tech Named Arcadia
@stylon I think the workaround for that would be to require a home XO registered with Gold membership.
Re: EA Sports UFC To Be Added to EA Access Vault Next Week
Awesome. I was wondering when they were going to add new content. I was beginning to feel like my 30 bucks was going to waste. This is probably a game I would have never tried if it wasn't offered to me...
Re: Rise of the Tomb Raider Now to Be Published by Microsoft - Likely to Be Fully Xbox Exclusive
@Vincent294 Ahhh I follow you now... Haha
Re: Rise of the Tomb Raider Now to Be Published by Microsoft - Likely to Be Fully Xbox Exclusive
Re: Resident Evil Remake Shuffles to Consoles This Coming January
@stylon from what it looks like, there will be modern controls, with an option to toggle to classic controls. But I feel you. Even today, when I go back to the older REs I'm like, "man, these controls are archaic... I can't even." lol
Re: Xbox One Dominates Black Friday in US, Nudges Ahead in UK
It's not surprising. The X1 had some amazing deals on bundles. I was almost tempted to pick up one for my room and another for my office!
Re: Xbox One Weekend Digital Deals Confirmed
This is what I get for being an early adopter. I have The Evil Within and Titanfall and it's season pass (that's a steal!) I haven't bitten on The Walking Dead yet, so I may go ahead and pull the trigger on the bundle (puns not intended. Haha)
Re: Some Day One Purchasers Of Xbox One To Get Free Limbo On Release
Re: Crunchyroll, Encore Play & MoviePlex Play Out Now on Xbox One
Oh my. The sub headline made my day! Thanks for that
Re: Poll: What's Your Most-Anticipated Game of November?
I chose "other" because, well, Super Smash Bros. But I do have like $50 in Xbox Live rewards saved up, so I'm sure I'm getting Halo: MCC
Re: DLNA Support And More Confirmed For October Xbox One Update - Rolling Out Now
@EternalDragonX what set up are you using? I'm asking, because I've always been able to use my phone as a bridge between my XB1 and PC using PS3 Media Server, so I'm trying to figure out what's changed concerning the Media Player app. When I launch it, it sees PS3 Media Server, but none of the folders it's sharing.
I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure it out. Unless I need to use a different server like Plex or something...
Re: Poll: Which October Release Are You Looking Forward To The Most?
Sunset Overdrive is the one I'm excited about the most, but I'm picking up both of The Walking Dead. I'm for sure picking Killer Instinct 2 and I'm on the fence about Alien, The Evil Within and WWE 2k15, I'm with @sinalefa as the games two October games I'm really excited about isn't on the list.
My backlog is ridiculously huge, and it looks to get larger by the end of this year! So many games, too little time!! Lol
Re: Talking Point: Tell Us About Your First Day With Destiny
Sadly, my copy is still sitting on my hard drive, just waiting to be launched. Work for the past few weeks or so has kept me from sinking any substantial amount of time into playing anything, save quick bursts of Super Time Force... Hopefully this weekend will be kinder to me...
Re: Need For Speed: Rivals Coming to EA Access Vault
That makes me kind of sad. I bought it during the gold sale... Though it basically a wash for me, given that I got a $27 credit at gamestop for my hard copy which was my intention in the first place.
