Re: Xbox Has Much Weaker Brand Momentum Than PlayStation, Claims New Sony Document

I think Diablo 4 will be awesome, especially to younger players. But for me? Starting with a wooden weapon, only to become the most powerful player after investing a year into a game...gets old. And so goes the age old saying, "The definition of crazy, is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results". Throwing a ball at a wall is fun....but for how long? Eventually it becomes a chore.

Sadly, after skipping an entire generation and a half of console gaming, I reenter the gaming industry; listening to reviews, buying highly rated games...only to find, like I said before, the same exact game mechanics, just with updated graphics.

And it's nothing against Microsoft or thier console, but what I've played up until this point, if nothing changes, I'll probably retire from playing games altogether with the next generation of consoles.

Now, on the flip side of things, I think Sony's worried. Worried that Microsoft does have the edge. As consoles and gaming PC's become one in the same, Microsoft will have the upper hand...simply because Sony isn't in the business of programming operating systems. And with the Steam handheld just getting started...I wouldn't be surprised if the two companies teamed up to put Nintendo and Sony out of the video game market. At least Nintendo is working with Microsoft. And I'm sure, if Nintendo didn't have thier handheld devices, they'd become another Sega.

And just one more thing. Sony is being a little b*tch about the Microsoft Activision merger. To me, that's Sony showing thier fear.

I actually bought the Xbox Series X, for Cyber Punk 2077. Well, that and a few other reasons. First, I wanted my digital library from back during the 360 era. Second, Ultimate Game Pass would allow me to play games on both my PC and Xbox (I own Halo: Master Chief Edition along with a few others).

Now, all I'm playing is Fallout 76...while I'm waiting for Diablo 4. But honestly, I'm not sure how long my interest is going to last, as most games are just the same old game mechanics, with updated graphics. Concerning Diablo 4...I played during the beta and while it was fun, I can already tell, it's going to be a long grind that I've experienced, over and over and over in the past.

@Dm9982 DooM Eternal. Great single player...but where's the old school death match?! I grew up designing levels and modding Doom. The single player was great...but death match was where it was at. And that aspect of the game is non-existent.

I miss the days of run and gun. Every pvp game now a days is some watered down version of CoD or Team Fortress with over the top graphics.

Now that I'm done with that little rant...those flash sales are awesome. It's a great way to pick up a handful of games for the price of a new game. Problem is, most of those games are unoriginal.

@BleedingDreamer I feel the exact same way. The only game that's peaked my curiosity since I bought my Xbox Series X, is Fallout 76 (and that's technically a Last-Gen game). It's the combination of rpg, loot, multiplayer and base building (base building being the key) in a 1st person perspective, that has me going back. But even that's getting stale. I don't mind grinding, but when a game forces you to log in daily, complete repetitive tasks, over and over again, just to gain a little more power...I begin to lose interest. Why? Because I've been there and done that before.

I personally feel like the video game industry has become a version of Hollywood. Yeah, you'll find a gem every so often, but for the most part, the larger development studios are only going to crank out software that resembles something that sold well in the past.

It wasn't the medium in which games were distributed, that caused me to skip a generation and a half of gaming. It was the money grab and lack of originality, where developers kept rehashing the same old formula over and over again.

And now after sinking more money than I care to admit into this generation of games; I'm beginning to think, it's the same old story.

Well, personally, every game I play now a days, gives me that feeling of "been there, done that". I was talking to a friend about the excitement that came with each new generation of games from back in the day. Using Morrowind as an example, the level of interaction within the game world and the true sense of exploration, it had never been done before! RPG's haven't evolved much since then.

Could you imagine, if we combined AI with voice recognition? It would definitely add some depth to fetch quests. Or what about an open world that's truly open world? You see a building? Well, seamlessly go inside, no more loading interiors from a doorway in the exterior. And what about destructible environments? Speaking of, what ever happened to Red Faction?

And since games are online now, what about integrating a mobile mini game that complements the console version?

What about a fallout 76, mmo town building tower defense type genre?

And going back to been there done that...how about a game, where you don't have to grind to become powerful...you start powerful and enhance those powers even further? Grindings fun and all...but I've been doing it for over 30 years. I'm tired of starting with a handgun/wooden sword.

In the end, I'm just looking for something new. I want a sense of adventure. I want a new formula, mix it up and stop going for what sells.

One last thing. They have yet to make an open world metroidvania. And if & when they finally do, I swear, they better not lock areas behind color coded doors.

@Moonglow "Why not make articles about Mighty Doom updates or the rumored Blizzard survival game? There are far more tangible topics for Xbox gamers"

Or write an article for older gamers, about how we no longer feel the need to buy another version of a 25-30 year old game for the 10th time.
Or an article about how collecting things is a waste of time and money.
Or how us older gamers are looking for something new...not the same old games with updated graphics and sound.
Or how most games just aren't fun anymore, because I've played them before, just with different packaging.
Or how 95% games now a days are unoriginal and feel a lot like the money grab developers made during the Atari era.

There's so many better things to write about, instead of what's coming and going from game pass. Or what's on sale.

Tell us something we don't know.

This game has been on my wish list, maybe it's about time I picked it up. I haven't done any research, because I've steered clear of 1st person shooters for quit some time now, as I'm an older gamer and the cod formula has been beaten like a dead horse; in my opinion.

When I picked up my series X, the very first 1st person I picked up was Doom Eternal (I grew up with DooM). I'm digging DooM's new formula of run, gun, flames, grenades and chainsaws; but man, does the multiplayer suck!

I don't know if Shadow Warrior is it, but I'm looking for some good old run and gun death match with fast, unrealistic, over the top graphics, power ups.

A new PGR with vehicle damage. I just started playing Wreckfest and man, does it remind me of a combination of racing games from back in the day. Destruction Derby, Nascar, Dirt and Protect Gotham (minus the kudos). I would pay dearly for a racing game with licensed car manufacturers, upgrades, customization, realistic vehicle damage, dirt and paved tracks, drifting, kudo / style point system, etc.

Has anyone here played Tokyo Xtreme Racer? Now that was a great street racing game for its time. Cruising around the highways of Tokyo at night, rolling up behind a car...flashing your headlights to initiate a race...customizing the appearance and performance of your car...man, do I wish they'd make a sequel.

Re: Talking Point: How Often Do You Play Backwards Compatible Games On Xbox?

PROPS

Maybe it's just my age and the fact that I've been playing the same games over and over and over again...but the nostalgia is gone. I played Mario when it first released. Grew up playing Wolfenstein 3d and eventually designing levels for DooM. Played Street Fighter II in the arcades. Warcraft and Diablo on the pc. You name it, I played. But it gets to a point where I just have to say, been there, done that.

I'm not 12 anymore, where I could sit and watch the same movie or show over and over and over again. I want something new and original.

That's why I just purchased an Xbox Series X and downloaded Cyberpunk 2077. While it isn't completely original, it's kind of what I imagined, as the future of gaming...some odd 35 years ago.
