Re: Review: Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed (Xbox) - Nintendo Wii Classic Gets A Modern Makeover

Elbow

This does seem to justify the price tag with having gone back to re-do assets, add new features, and convert motion controls to proper controllers.

That said, I also understand every complaint on the price tag feeling too high, even with all that in mind. It's an interesting point, but I hope it does well. I doubt the rest of Warren Spector's grand Epic Mickey plans will live on, but at least seeing the second game get a spit-shine would be real nice!

Re: TMNT: Shredder's Revenge Scores 'Radical Reptiles' DLC Update

Elbow

This is incredible! I mean, an incredible leak but also I thought this game was done. I'm happy it's still going strong, I still play it from time to time, and I never would've guessed Mona Lisa would be a playable character. This is sick. Mondo looks so fun to play as, too. Long live Turtlemania!

Edit: AND Jake Kaufman is doing a remix? I really want to hear what he's contributing. The earlier Shantae games and Double Dragon Neon have some of my favorite game OSTs ever. Mango Tango - Neon Jungle is divine.

Re: Soapbox: Gears Of War E-Day Could Be Something Special, If The Coalition Gets It Right

Elbow

I'm really conflicted. Gears 5 burnt me real bad. 4 was underwhelming, campaign wise, but the multiplayer was solid even if I didn't care for the generic weapon replacements.

I want E-Day to be good but man, I also dread a new Gears game after playing 5's slog of a trend chasing everything, but especially the campaign. (Besides Act 1, that was good and felt like classic Gears, which I think made everything that came after feel ten times worse than it actually was.)

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 21-22)

Elbow

No More Heroes 3 I'm still chopping away at, mostly due to the RNG drops from bosses. I want all the achievements and that's up to RNG... I've had to repeat certain bosses 40+ times for one drop.

I started Little Kitty Big City last night and I'm in love with the charm of it. Janky, but oozing charm and creativity. My 15 year old tabby cat hopped up onto the coffee table and leaned towards the TV to get a look at the cat wearing a mushroom hat. This game passes the Cat Test! My boy wasn't too thrilled with the cute cat intruding on the TV though.

I also wrapped up Lost Words: Beyond the Page this morning. A short game that I'd never heard of on sale for chump change and ended up being shockingly great. Story about accepting the passing of loved ones, while platforming around in a fantasy world created to cope with the loss and pain of it all.

Re: Palworld Dev Pocketpair Responds To Nintendo Lawsuit

Elbow

@Lup That's the fun part. You are just expected to know, and if you don't pore through every patent to make sure you're not infringing, well by gosh poor Nintendo has no other choice!

The rules/patent system sucks in a way I cannot describe in the comments as it would immediately get me jettisoned into the sun. But Japanese laws/systems are also different to other countries, so that adds in extra layers of complexity.

Re: Phil Spencer Invites Xbox Fans To Tune Into Tokyo Games Show 2024 Broadcast

Elbow

Okay, this-- THIS. PLEASE. THIS is a good way to market/announce a presence at a showcase.

Aaron Greenberg, PLEASE. Please. Take notes from your own boss on how to do your job. Don't bring out the trumpet and start dancing around when all you have is a toy wagon behind you with trinkets and a minifridge in it.

Just be humble, don't immediately smash your face into the pedal and take off 90MPH into the nearest brick wall. Print out Phil's statement and put it in a picture frame over your desk, Aaron. Please. I know this sounds condescending and I truly don't mean it to be, but this is exactly how showcases and events should be teased and/or announced.

Being humble, quiet, and direct with what to expect will always, always, reign over a sea of airhorns and hype. And if you do have a huge mega announcement at the end or somewhere in the show? Bring out the airhorns after it's over.

Re: Xbox's Sarah Bond Initially 'Clashed' With Phil Spencer When Working Together

Elbow

So, the gist I'm getting is-- Sarah is doing the heavy lifting (for good and bad) and Phil is just... spitting word salad at people and not being direct in what should be going on? This is so weird. Between this, and that old article (linked on this page, the Hypercharged one) where Sarah reached out to talk to the devs while Phil wasn't present. That was around the time of the studio closures earlier this year, so he was just cowering while he let Sarah face the public.

What the hell is going on?

Re: Tango Gameworks' New Owner Doesn't Even Expect Hi-Fi RUSH 2 To Make Money

Elbow

At least someone in an official capacity finally said the quiet part out loud. I think NetEase said the same thing about Grasshopper Manufacture, and I'm sincerely hoping this turns out for the best with both parties.

@InvaderFromSpace I would advise at least a bit of caution. It's good they did this, but Krafton also forcibly rushed The Callisto Protocol out months before it was ready, knowing it wasn't finished but needing something to release in the calendar year. They were guilty of the very same "numbers must go up to feed the endless appetite of our shareholders" thing that's going on with Xbox.

Re: Nintendo And The Pokémon Company File Lawsuit Against Palworld Developer

Elbow

@Mustoe No one is arguing the concept is original, but "capturing critter with object" is not unique to Pokemon. Pokemon blatantly ripped off Dragon Quest's designs back in the day, while Palworld, conceptually, is a dime-a-dozen idea. Or are you referring to the designs of the pals? Because I can agree they do lean towards an obvious inspiration that can't be denied.

I'm not trying to sound hostile I just legitimately want to know exactly what you mean by ripping off Pokemon.

@Banjo- I have heard horror stories of the companies Nintendo outsources repairs to in EU. It's interesting to see how Sega and Nintendo are complete polar opposites when it comes to fan works/deviations on their games (well, within reason-- no selling fan made Sonic games is obvious, but Sega otherwise is incredibly friendly to fan projects.)

Sonic Mania and some ports of their older games to modern devices only exist because they hired the guy who was making impressive Genesis-accurate recreations of the original Sonic games on his own custom-made engine. That would get someone sued by Nintendo and a permanent portion of their earnings forever stipend by the company.

I do still love Nintendo's games, but I've always hated their business side.

(Edit: I posted two comments back-to-back so condensed my replies into one, realized I was borderline spamming, sorry about that.)

Re: Nintendo And The Pokémon Company File Lawsuit Against Palworld Developer

Elbow

@Banjo- a reminder that Akira Toriyama was such a powerhouse that his art for one of the spinoff DQ games was heavily lifted by Gamefreak. He had the midas touch, even when he wasn't involved.

Edit: For those unaware of the name, Akira Toriyama was the creator of the manga Dr. Slump, and then went on to create the Dragon Ball manga (later anime juggernaut), and was the artist for the Dragon Quest series. Later, he worked on art for Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon (Xbox 360). Most recently, his manga Sand Land was turned into a game by Bandai Namco. He was a titan, and of course he did more than just what I've mentioned, but these are his bigger hits.

Re: Xbox Has Begun Including Handhelds In Promotional Images

Elbow

I just wonder if the market isn't already saturated. Nintendo, of course, are the big boys in the handheld market. Then you have Steam Deck making waves, and the third party handheld devices. Although I understand a handheld would also make Xbox more appealing overseas, and if the thing is basically a handheld "series s" to the main home console of next gen, that is SUCH a better idea than what we got this gen.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 14-15)

Elbow

I've ended up replaying No More Heroes 3. I pray at the altar of Suda51 frequently, and just noticed this was on Gamepass. So... even though I got a Switch for TSA and NMH3, I'm grinding it out all over again to get all the Xbox achievements.

The Lollipop Chainsaw re-release also spurred my interest, as that was something he worked on. But it seems he hasn't had a hand in this remaster, so I don't know how to feel.

Re: Xbox's 'Double Fine' Studio Dismisses Idea Of Making New Banjo Or Conker Games

Elbow

@Banjo- Everyone saying "do you really want another Banjo game?" and acting like we only want another N64 tier platformer literally made beat for beat like those games are infuriating. Man, no one says that about Mario, but there are some chuckleheads in charge at Rare that seem to willfully ignore or step around it to act like it can't be more than just another N64 collectathon.

Re: Reaction: PS5 Pro's Extortionate Price Justifies Xbox's Lack Of A New Console

Elbow

Prices should be going down, this generation is the most stagnant I've ever seen. It doesn't even feel like most games have taken advantage of anything other than the new disc cases. Xbone and PS4 almost feel like they're stronger than they've ever been four years after their replacements waddled out onto the market. I seriously think this generation will be extended, just by how dire everything has been.

Re: Xbox's New 'Sonic Legacy Bundle' Includes A Recently Delisted Classic

Elbow

@Markatron84 Hey, HEY. As someone who is not a fighting game fan, Sonic Fighters is great.

Now don't get me wrong. It's not a great game, but the stupidity and wonky controls make it almost feel like a party game, especially with online play added. (Also just clarifying yes it's a bad game, but it almost gets to "so bad its good" territory.)

I want to argue for SA1&2 but I know better...

Re: Deals: The Xbox Store Is Stacked With New Sales To Kick Off September

Elbow

@Banjo- Oh yeah, I've been watching sales on a lot of games like a hawk. To the best of my knowledge, unless it's a game on a newer console or has a version bundled with all DLC, most companies just seem to forget 360-era DLC exists. Some exceptions (Take Two is great with this actually) but I have to assume it's something with the existing 360 storefront that they just don't want to mess with anymore.

Re: Enotria Dev Publicly Thanks Xbox & Phil Spencer For Helping To 'Resolve' Delay Situation

Elbow

This is the second similar case of a game dev having issues with Microsoft in a short span of time. Sometimes I wonder if they just wait around for fires to put out. It feels like it with cases like this.

Also it's good this got resolved, but this is giving me flashbacks to when Phil promised the PC Xbox app would be improved and then never was. Here's hoping this won't be a sequel to that.
