@NEStalgia I see what you did but I don't think that he (she?) cares. Ignored me and blocked me for no reason like a 5-year-old and didn't even react to your well-intentioned words. Not that I care for someone like that but you were so kind.

I just learned about blocking because I had not ignored him and couldn't see his comments anymore. I just used that (block) for a few unpleasant bullies that I ignored years ago (on NL) but still today decontextualize and quote my phrases and reply nonsense (JasonH).

@NEStalgia Anyway, (s)he doesn't seem to care. Anti is sometimes funny to read, Jason isn't. Needless to say, Anti doesn't make any sense but he's not liar, manipulative, passively aggressive and plays the victim like Jason, who said years ago that he was leaving NL for good but, unfortunately, he's still preaching and decontextualizing me and others and I don't have the time or patience to correct every single lie or sermon that addresses me.

The problem with the internet is that anyone can join a forum and believe that they are right while not having any respect for the facts and the truth. In this society, the truth doesn't matter, it's just them that matter. It's a globalised society but at the same time it's the most individual society ever, a virtual society where everyone thinks that they're always right because there is no real communication. Not everybody is like that, obviously, but too many people. On that thread you have many examples.

@BlueOcean That's a shame.

True enough on the other thing though. I try to take the good with the bad on people like him that can be both worthwhile and also frustrating. But your description of the pattern isn't wrong. Some people, especially if you have a decent history with them you can joke with a truism without it coming across as an insult. Not him, and I forget that. He's a staunch defender of the brand, and he also has a habit of latching into every single new thing and it's his new favorite thing of all time until the next new thing happens. And that thing will be celebrated and defended. It's not an insult, it's an observation anyone that reads the comments can see easily. But I've made the mistake twice now of actually mentioning that in a friendly joking way and end up with this serious retaliatory chiding like I've dishonored his ancestors.

You're very right on the world and internet I think. Heck I wish it were confined to the internet. Though worse than not respecting the truth or facts, I think, the most dangerous part of the modern world is data. It's not that nobody respects the facts. It's that everyone is armed with facts proven in data that prove they're right. Data can prove whatever you want it to. Data can prove the earth is flat. You just have to pick the right data to represent the proof you want. Modern politics, business, and media live by that. So does the internet. Jax is absolutely provably right based on the supporting data he chooses to use to back it. We're absolutely right with the data we're using to back it. Everybody is right and everybody can prove it in data. And nobody has to listen to anyone else and anyone else's data isn't relevant because the data everyone uses confirms their belief as hard fact. The data driven society is the most dangerous possible society. It encourages not exploring any topic, not critically thinking about it, and instead just analyzing data to arrive at scientific truth. That's great if you're trying to catalogue the melting points of various composites. Not great if you're trying to discuss qualitative values of something. "Common sense"or the human element ends up removed from discussion, and discussion, instead of understanding different thoughts ends up as a war of the incontrovertible data.

I've learned to hate data. Data always lies. People use it like it's court evidence, but it's not. It's days, it's incomplete, and it always lies unless the answer you're trying to prove is nothing but a hard metric like what game outsold another. But even then, it can't tell you WHY. While it may be accurate in record, it's usage never includes or can include all relevant data. The truths it shows rarely are real because it's always missing relevant components that are part of that reality. We no longer debate ideas and viewpoints we just use incomplete views of reality as represented by limited data to dictate our reality and viewpoints.

@NEStalgia I figured that he is a religious (he said so) immigrant (I deduced so) that is full of resentment (we see that) and plenty of free time (it seems so). I agree, there is lack of common sense and they overuse decontextualized data to "prove" "facts". There is also a lack of constructive criticism and there is no intention to listen, to understand and to see the bigger picture. With small decontextualized data they try to destroy a perfectly valid main idea (as shown on that thread). They aggressively address you, cut a sentence, even if it's not part of your main argument and pretend that that phrase proves that your entire argument is wrong (they have done that more than once on that thread). Heck, they even said that I was not making sense because I removed Snipperclips and Sushi Striker when that's for my argument and that means fewer exclusives made by Nintendo. Snipperclips wasn't developed by Nintendo and Sushi Striker is on 3DS. I also added that we are not discussing mini games anyway but they don't care. They are not communicating, they are corrupting communication.

I had my own argument with Jax which lead to us blocking each other. There was a whole bunch of “you’re wrong and this is why” from his side which admittedly was on some subjective matter. Anyways I never chalked it up to him being religious and or an immigrant or angry at the world. I just think he’s a Nintendo fanboy and if you question Nintendo at all then you must be wrong.

sixrings

Banjo-

@sixrings He kind of preach what he doesn't do but as NEStalgia and you said, it's more extremist about Nintendo than about the other things I've detected he's sensitive to. According to my profile, he was the first person I've ever ignored but I didn't know I could block until Ralizah blocked me two days ago because of that thread you posted on today. He keeps on fighting me after four years, even if I never see what he writes unless I clean the PC and I have to log in again, so blocking him now is a blessing so he can finally stop hounding me after all these years of unhealthy obsession.

Banjo-

NEStalgia

@BlueOcean Haha, with deductions like that, Ace attorney shouldn't be on your playlist lol!

He's pretty open with his bio actually. And his real identity and Twitter is open and he shares it for game posts. Not an immigrant as far as I know at all. Something of a gifted (math) student and general overachiever that fell in with the wrong crowd and ended up a, I believe it was meth, maybe it was heroine addict at rock bottom. Then with the help of what sounds a relatively well to do family managed to get clean and get back to overachieving in what sounds like a high level position with some kind of statistical or analysis role based in a lab at a manufacturing company of some sort. Credit where due that's an impressive feat of resolve. Divorced after a short marriage. Sounds like she may have been a piece of work herself, but being on the receiving end of his inappropriately heated arguments, and having been compared to her at least once, myself, I can easily deduce there's a second side to that story...

Weirdly I've disagreed with him on a religious issue (overpopulation) and he firmly but politely stopped that. Fair. I've disagreed with him on a sociopolitical issue (new capitalism where business should charge what the market will pay rather than cost + profit as it used to be.). He strongly argued but argued fairly and honestly. It's really ONLY arguing Nintendo that gets him so high strung. Once in the ps thread when he got PS5 I said I was surprised he got one and he went into one of those stern responses basically summarized as "how dare you call me a Nintendo fanboy!" It's weird, really. Generally an ok guy as long as you never argue Nintendo or mention his attachment to it....

It's frustrating that I KNOW he can debate reasonably and respectfully.... And twice as frustrating when someone I know can do that is the one that's the most disruptive to a reasonable conversion. Even bolt, who was getting a bit hot headed, was also showing some give and take in the conversation. Only jax was pure aggression. And I know he's able to be better than that.

But yeah, that guerilla debate technique is just infuriating. Strawmen galore. Dismissiveness galore. And projection galore (claiming I'm the one doing the former two). The more you defend the more he twists it his way. It was just an ugly dialogue made worse by him jumping into an existing dialogue so it became 3 against 1. I was honestly fine debating with bolt. He at least, if somewhat hot under the collar at times kept the tone of debate throughout rather than just turning it into a soap box to denounce wrongthink. So, basically, Reddit and Twitter...

All I remember was there was a bunch of jax defenders on there and when the argument went to the ignore route there was people trying to tell me that jax was reasonable and just misunderstood. But then I logged on without signing in so I could read everything he was writing to the forum and I’m like you’re a dork. There’s no changing your mind. You like to think you’re open minded but you’re not. That’s ok. Time to move on.

@sixrings lol, yeah,....I can see that...

@SplooshDmg been playing the series s for a few days now. It's a mixed bag as expected. Technically it's pretty impressive. Been playing Forza and the Forzagrass(tm) and Forzabushes(tm) @blueocean leave a lot to be desired. It's clearly just not putting great detail out at 60fps. BUT it plays well and generally looks good enough. Certainly better looking than the artifacting when streaming. But tons of pop in and be low res sprites and billboards.

I'm pleased enough. But what surprised me is when I started up Yakuza0. It's fugly the x1x renders it identical to series x. The series s runs it like it's a vcr xbone. It seems to run well and "up to 1400p" with Series games, but bc is inexplicably locked at 1080p with no AA to speak of so that things run worse than x1x on a console several times more powerful than it. That's the one place it's kind of disappointing.

It's good, and for actual series games it's surprisingly decent but it's not the best bc box for a 4k screen, and oddly a native x1x is still better for that.. No quick resume though..

I'll definitely still be trying to shop for a spare X. And playing a lot of PS5 while I'm down. But the s is cute and nice to have on hand. Especially since I have a library 300 deep on xb and a library "only" like 75 deep on ps, with a lot of those as older PS2/3/vita jrpgs.

@NEStalgia I like my series s. But the way it does backward comparability sucks. I wish it played the Xbox one x enhanced versions of the old games. But nope. You get whatever crappy resolution it was made in. Yes I only have a 1080p tv so technically the series s is perfect but I don’t like playing 720p Xbox one games either.

sixrings

NEStalgia

@sixrings @SplooshDmg Yeah with xsxs games the s is really slick. But for bc, which is, like, most games right now, it's not just worse, but a lot worse than the x1x. It's kinda pitiful and there's no real excuse for it. If I weren't playing Forza I'd probably box it up and connect the 1x again. It's the Superior machine for most games right now other than new ones. But there's no technological reason for it, the s is a far more capable machine.

I hate to say it, but that's Sony grade effort right there....

Right now the s is a Forza box to become a Halobox, but other than that the PS5 gets my time until my x returns now. Still going to shop around and try to land a spare X. if nothing else scalper process probably drop a bit a few months from Christmas.

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@SplooshDmg true, maybe that's it. Either way the s is a bit disappointing due to that. For new games it's actually good so it's worth having around but since I do a ton of bc it's literally a downgrade to 5 years ago.

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@SplooshDmg Yeah I technically get it, but you'd just think it wouldn't be worse at anything last gen than a last gen console. I get the product family makes sense it just seems wrong. Yes, it is actually cheaper, too, but it just seems kind of awkward that I'm better off playing a lot of games on a last gen 2017 console than a brand new series s. I still have 1x. In fact I have a lot of one xs around.... So I guess no loss, but then it means I need the series s for new games, the one x for old games and there's this who whole PS3 to PS4 feeling about it going on.

It's good for what it is, and strangely will seem better over time as more of the library is xsxs based but when you have hundreds of non enhanced games it looks kinda ugly (omg wonder what rdr2 is like ).

I knew it's not truly an x replacement but I didn't think I'd be looking at my old 1x and thinking of it as the preferable console... . I might stream Yakuza.... It looks better streamed than native in the xss. Though I have death loop and boring spider man to finish up anyway

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@SplooshDmg True technically and if anything it highlights the absurdity of mid gen bumps when next gen is actually worse than it...

Tough not too many games I have didn't get enhanced. Dark souls 2 I think. Deus ex md. Tekken7. There's like a dozen others but most of the collection is enhanced.

At first I was thrilled with a. It was like "I don't even notice it's not my x!". Then I loaded Yakuza and was like "ok, kill it with fire, where's my PS4 pro?"

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@SplooshDmg what i still want to know is how scalpers are getting so many. One of the marketplaces lists how many they've sold. Just for the us plug variety they've apparently sold nearly 60,000. there's got to be some inside shenanigans inside the distributors. No way inventories from Walmart are vanishing in seconds in that volume from scalpers. I'm thinking the reason they sell out before the button goes live is because they've already been sold en masse before the selling starts.

And after buying that w+, so far I had to spend $10 on local delivery (+tip) because they're booked solid through next Monday but an urgent 1 hour delivery with $10 premium opened they apparently got a little grocery (more like Kmart grocery than Walmart grocery). And the laundry detergent I was going to get even before w+ is no longer shipped and is delivery only for "free" with no appointment available all week, no inventory in store and even if they do you have to add the $7 driver tip.....I think I'll just pay double from scalpers on Amazon....

@Ryu_Niiyama lol, I wondered if you'd ever find it, I tagged you in the first post because you know of the legendary curse!

I thought maybe it was just actual PCs that I was the Digital Grim Reaper (eReaper? iReaper?) of, but no, it's also consoles. And DVD/bd players. And I went to turn the TV on on Thanksgiving which is basically the only day a year I do that and spent an hour troubleshooting what turned out to be a Darbee processing box that went bad. And all that's on an ups. Poor electronics...

I have 2 or 3 ps3s that won't read a disc.... I think that was just normal that gen (oh no, maybe that was the curse and I didn't even know it...)

NEStalgia

Ryu_Niiyama

@NEStalgia I have been considering deleting my account and I don’t come here often so while I saw the thread title I only logged in recently and saw your notification. Anyway. Xboxes are my bane. 360 and the one hate me but everything else including my OG SNES and second hand NES work just fine. As long as that doesn’t extend to my Surface Pro I am happy. Now if I had your um luck however, I would have gotten out of gaming by now. Replacing systems and computer parts is expensive.

@NEStalgia Actually, I was right about most of the stuff I guessed, ha ha. Seriously, He just blows his own trumpet. Tell me what he brags about and I'll tell you what he lacks. An intelligent person wouldn't behave like he's five years old and use weak arguments, lie, twist and get offended and then attack personally for no reason. On top of that, he plays the victim. He's doing everything wrong when arguing with people and he's not giving anything positive to any debate I've seen.

NEStalgia wrote:

I didn't feel like dealing with all that cr*p. Bolt doesn't see the reality (the topic) either but he doesn't play dirty so I still talk with him. To be honest, I speak briefly with him because he never changes his mind so no point in trying to exchange viewpoints. Bolt hasn't twisted my words, lied or attacked me personally. Jason has, like others, but he gets obsessed.

Exactly the same here. @NEStalgia says he's okay and, no offence, but I don't believe it. I also checked the thread after ignoring him and he was still bashing me and hypocritically playing the victim as if he was completely innocent and open-minded and I was 100% to blame. He does the same with other people and it seems that I have missed most of that, like his argument with @sixrings. People don't change that quickly, I mean, in five minutes, but he hasn't changed in years either and he won't change because he's absolutely stubborn. He just plays the I'm a good guy role in public trying to convince the others that his intentions are good and that he's a good Christian and, if his intentions really are good, the problem is much bigger.

@NEStalgia Lately, I've been doing work on my own, basically since covid, and it's weird because I have to manage my time completely on my own for the first time. I have had time to play all Gears of War campaigns this year but they're not long but I'm not playing Forza Horizon 5 much yet so I haven't really analysed the differences in the ForzagrassTM and ForzatreesTM yet between the two modes. I have to say that Forza Horizon 3 really blew my mind because I've never seen anything like that and that was on Xbox One and I was coming from Wii U where even the best-looking game has all kind of graphical artefacts. Now I am more experienced and watching most Digital Foundry videos have helped.
