I've been really getting into the Resident Evil series now and I thought it'd be nice to create a topic for it in case there are other fellow RE fans. The games I've played so far are Resident Evil Remake, which I played through last year, and the original RE 1 and 2 on PS1, which I played through this year. I'm currently playing the original RE3 and having a blast with it thus far. The only gripe I have is that it's a bit too open compared to the previous two RE games. I've never had issues finding out where to go in the first two games, but I was actually stumped in the third game. The issue is that there are two maps in the first half of the game and I had no idea that you were supposed to go back to the first one in order to complete one of your objectives. In the past two RE games, the areas are not that big and it's fairly obvious where you should go next. That's not the case in RE3 though and it doesn't help either that the game keeps bringing new enemies to areas you've cleared. It's cool that it keeps you on your toes, but at the same time it discourages exploration, which is why I didn't want to go back to the first map due to how many enemies there were there. Anyway, I want to ask what you guys' opinion is on the original PS1 trilogy. I've heard some people say that the original RE1 doesn't hold up well while RE2 is still a masterpiece. I don't understand this comparison at all as I've played through both games back-to-back and they play pretty much the same. Both games have tank controls, inventory management, puzzle-solving etc. and so I just don't get why people would say that RE1 doesn't hold up well but RE2 does. I agree that RE2 is better than RE1, but saying that RE1 doesn't hold up compared to RE2 is so weird to me, I don't get that at all. Further, there's this conception that RE3 is action-oriented and once again, I don't understand that either. Unless you're playing on Easy where you start with a bunch of weapons already, but if you're playing on Hard (which is the Normal difficulty of the RE games) then the experience will be just as much "survival horror" as the previous two games. It's definitely not heavier on action than RE2 was. I mean, one of Claire's main weapons in RE2 is a freaking grenade launcher and she gets tons of ammo for that weapon throughout her playthrough. There's also a submachine gun, flamethrower, sparkshot and so on in RE2. So once again, I don't get why people are saying that RE3 is more action-oriented. Finally, I'd like to talk about future RE games to play. So since I'm about to finish up the original PS1 trilogy, this will open up multiple options for me in terms of what I should play next. I'm playing through this series mostly in story order and after the original RE3, I can play either Code Veronica X, Zero or RE4. I think what I want to do is to play Zero next simply because I want a break from the main series so to speak. Code Veronica is apparently the hardest game in the series due to its unfair traps and it's another RE game with tank controls (which I've just played three of), so I think I'll play it at a later time. RE4 is regarded as one of the best, if not the best game in the series so I want to at least experience a few more RE titles before getting to that masterpiece. Zero is apparently also one of the most difficult games in the series, but at least there's an Easy difficulty mode, which I'm definitely going to choose. I've heard that you have to escort someone throughout the game and it can be hard trying to keep the other person alive. Not to mention that there are some enemy types that are ruthless on Normal difficulty. So for the sake of my sanity, and my enjoyment of the game, I think it'd be a good idea to experience Zero on Easy. Another reason for choosing to play Zero next is that I'll finally be able to start up the Chronicles games on Wii. I really want to play something on my Wii and Umbrella Chronicles looks like a lot of fun. It's apparently based on RE 0, 1 and 3, so after finishing up 3 and 0 I'll finally be able to play that game. But maybe you guys have some other input in terms of which order I should be playing the games since I obviously don't know that much about the series. Apologies for the long post but there was so much that I wanted to write down about these games. I'm seriously loving this series so far!

I really like 3 (remake) for what it is. It's kind of bridging the gap between the survival horror or 1 and 2 and the more action oriented game that 4 is.

@Faultandfracture Me too, I know that 3 Remake disappointed some because of its length and because it focused on its unique features, but I think it's better than the original 3 and I loved it. Is it short? Yes, but I'm a fan of the series, and all the classics and remakes are awesome for different things. The only two main entries that have disappointed me are 7 and 8, 8 especially.
