Re: Epic Games Lays Off 1,000 Staff, Announces Closure Of Fortnite Rocket Racing

@Fiendish-Beaver For a long time it worked that way, but over the last decade/decade-and-a-half, it’s changed, whether the game is AAA or AA or Indie. Devs aren’t just putting out games and moving on anymore, even when they’re single-player games, and the way games are being funded and updated has changed.

Terraria for example has received multiple updates that were billed as the absolute last update, but the devs keep coming back to it. The devs for games like Vampire Survivors and Balatro continue to put out updates rather than moving on. Cult Of The Lamb keeps getting updates, PEAK keeps getting updates… A lot of games simply aren’t release-and-done anymore.

Early Access has been a sea change in the way games are made, as well; for AAA stuff like Grounded 1 & 2 and Indie/AA tier hits like Hades 1 & 2 (and many more).

And like, I also have to agree with @MinervaX76 that blanket statements about live service games being bad are bothersome. I recently picked up Zenless Zone Zero and it’s story, overall art design, and music have gotten its hooks in me. A lot of talented devs and artists would simply not be able to flex their skills and make cool stuff for a living if live service games didn’t exist.

@Sakai Yeah. The number of people using the word “sunset” in this article’s comments and the other one has been offputting. Like everyone in the comments just now learned how the word gets used in a business context and started using it to further justify their doomerism and sink deeper into it.

I made this account the other day to reply to someone who trotted out the extra-doomer October rumors again. I pointed out that AMD still has a contract to make custom/semi-custom chipsets for Xbox. The news and info on the ground as of right now keeps pointing to them continuing to make machines called Xboxes that they want you to be able to access your whole library from and buy new games with. People need to relax, sit down, and play some games for a while. Or step away from their computers and news sites for a while.

@Grumblevolcano This rumor never made any sense given that Xbox announced earlier in the same year a multi-year partnership/contract with AMD to make new chips for hardware.

What shape that hardware takes is anybody's guess. But as of this current juncture in time, things point to there being a new upcoming machine with the Xbox name on it, and those machines will have a method of people being able to access their whole Xbox console library.
