Yesterday, the beta gates flung open for Xbox players to have their first crack at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and from what we can tell, it seems to have made quite the first impression over the past 24 hours.

We've managed to play quite a few multiplayer matches and try out the campaign mission, and visually, this year's COD is a bit of a looker. Of course, Modern Warfare 4 is still in beta, which means performance is subject to change before its full release on October 23, 2026, but so far we're impressed, specifically by the lighting.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta supports two performance modes across both current-gen Xbox consoles.

On the Xbox Series X, both the 60Hz and 120Hz options target a dynamic 4K resolution, although internal resolutions suggest the former is closer to 1440p, whilst the latter sits around 1080p.

As for frames, the 60Hz mode holds a rock steady 60FPS, with only occasional dips in multiplayer. The 120Hz mode fluctuates between 120FPS and 110FPS in multiplayer, whilst the campaign seems to sit closer to 80-90FPS.

Onto the Xbox Series S, and it does a decent job compared to its more powerful twin. Both 60Hz and 120Hz modes target a dynamic 1440p resolution, although internal resolutions are suggested to sit around 1080p-1206p in 60Hz mode and 576p-1080p in 120Hz.

Frame rates are a bit all over the place on Xbox Series S. In 120Hz mode, multiplayer can very much reach 120FPS in places, but can also dip as low as 70FPS. Campaign performance varies from around 70FPS to the low 90s. In 60Hz mode, multiplayer holds around 60FPS during scraps but can dip to roughly 40FPS when respawning. Campaign performance, meanwhile, seems to hold onto 60FPS very well.
