By the time they implement this nobody will care. I want backwards compatibility so I can finish off some of my 360 games. I'd actually like to remove the 360 from the entertainment center altogether but won't for some time. Although truth be told I've not played a single 360 game since I got my launch day XBone. The 360 is only used to launch NHL Gamecenter.
I'm really looking forward to Child of Light. Didn't realize a new Trials was coming for Xbone and that will most assuredly need to be purchased. I'm intrigued by Strike Suit Zero. Is that an on-rails shooter or more open space like the old Wing Commander or Freespace games?
I'm a BF4 Premium subscriber and have to laugh at them reminding us that we get 2 weeks early access. Yeah.. PS4 users are playing Naval Strike right now.. I'm not. Xbox 360 users are playing it right now.. I'm not. Oh well.. I've pretty much moved to Titanfall for my FPS needs for right now anyway. But with this in mind, I think this will be the last time I purchase Premium for a Battlefield game. When everything works, it's a great game.. but it's been plagued with so many issues that I can't help but be jaded by it.
Not to sound like an entitled gamer, but I've played BF2 and BF2 Spec Ops on PC. Battlefield 2142 on PC. Both Bad Companies on 360, BF3 on 360 (premium subscription) and now BF4 with premium. Both BF3 and 4 were launch day purchases. At this point I won't pick up BF5 until at least a month after release to see if they get their act straight.
Well... I guess I may need to rethink getting Xbox One games at launch. No interest in Ghosts but I got the digital Tomb Raider about 2 weeks after it came out and pre-ordered Thief. Considering that's only been out a month I feel a bit sick on that one.
@DRL I can't disagree with you about wanting the case on the shelf. The only game I've gone digital with so far on Xbone is Tomb Raider. Although now that I've beaten it I wish I could trade it in..LOL. Part of me also regrets not making that brash decision to splurge on the Titanfall collector's edition with the statue. Now that would look amazing on the shelf!
I'll definitely be playing Titanfall this weekend. That game is like crack and I'm pretty sad that I decided to purchase the physical copy instead of digital as I realize it should always be available on tap without needing a disk swap. I may pop Thief back in, but I'm probably deluding myself thinking that way. I picked up Bravely Default at the same time I got Titanfall and I've basically stolen my son's 3DS so that I can get some old school style JRPG back into my life. That will most assuredly see a few hours of play this weekend as well.
Nice review. I'm definitely enjoying Titanfall and love what it has brought to the FPS genre. I'd add a couple negative points to it that weren't mentioned but I think do deserve to be when you consider some of the other games in the genre. One negative is I think the total amount of customization is a bit lacking when you look at say BF4 or CoD and how much you can unlock for each individual weapon and then tack on appearance variations. Another would be the inability to spawn on a squad mate. Considering this game is 6v6, that seems like a bit of a miss.
Minor issues to be sure and I wouldn't be surprised if Titanfall 2 doesnt address at least the quantity of unlocks. Still an extremely fun game that just can't be quite put into words. I'd honestly say they could take the titans completely out of the game and just leave the pilots with the wall running and double jumping and it would still be head and shoulders ahead of most FPS games out there.
I'm certainly intrigued by this. I had purchased Forza 5 at launch for Xbone but have already sold it back to Gamestop. Nothing wrong with it, but wasn't playing it. This video makes me think there may be dynamic weather or time of day changes which is what I've always wanted with a high quality racing simulator. I found nothing more annoying than racing the Prague track in Forza 5 and it's always at the same time of day where there were sections with the sun right in your face. I'll definitely keep my eyes on this.
My biggest complaint with the Games with Gold is I've already purchased the lion's share of the titles they are giving away. When you are picking games that are AAA titles from 2-4 years ago, who hasn't picked it up by now whether it was at launch or used for $10 a couple years later? And the "you get to keep the game" argument is weak. I don't know anyone that subscribes to gold, then lapses and then resubscribes later, etc. As someone already mentioned, you either have it or you don't for the most part. I'd much rather have some great new games that go away if I let me subscription to Gold go away then ancient games that I've already beaten and traded back to Gamestop.
Also, let's get something going on XB1 already. Seems like we should at least be getting some good arcade type titles by now.
That's all great but I think the one I want most is external HDD support. I don't have a huge stack of games but I'm already at almost 50% full on my internal drive. Getting Titanfall next week which will most assuredly eat up another 5-10% and you can start to see my concern.
I watched a video that Major Nelson posted recently regarding this game with some developer interviews, etc. I'm intrigued in some ways and in others think this game is going to be pretty bad. Some of it reminded me of a supernatural LA Noir which could be very cool.
@DRL I blame caffeine deficiency for various things almost every day.. so I'm perfectly fine with that excuse. I was amused to realize that I'm 38 and don't think I've ever seen united replaced with untied before and it immediately conjured an image of states floating away from each other.
I'm probably going to be the only one amused by the 'Untied' States that slipped by the spell checker. Unless of course that's accurate and only Hawaii and Alaska are getting this released on Feb 4th.
@SuperKMx I hear you. Played it last night thinking I would just play a quick game.. instead I finished the entire zone I was on and went to bed well past midnight.
That sounds really interesting. I was reading that and hoping it was an XBLA title. Regardless, I may have to check this out. Been a long time since I did any PC gaming.
Not real thrilled to see a $10 price difference between 360 and Xbox One versions of the same game. Also.. I'm wondering if releasing 7 days after Titanfall during a notoriously slow time for new games is really the best idea?
@SuperKMx It would be interesting to know what would have happened if Xbox had released in limited markets like the PS4 did instead of spreading the total allotment over 13 countries. It's quiet possible the numbers may have added up to be similar. Regardless of anything, I've seen more reports that indicate Xbox sales were very good and I am confident this will be successful generation for them.
I've played all the Forza games with the exception of Horizon. Usually I'd find myself deluged with cars either from winning series or from a glut of cash. This game I'm finding the winnings to be somewhat marginal and the possibility of buying one of the top tier cars looking extremely remote. That's when I realized that they want you to purchase tokens and use those.. except some cars would cost almost $24. Eh.. no. Go home Turn 10.. you're drunk!
Glad to see they are working on fixing this. I had thought about buying the LaFerrari pack but then realized I wouldn't be able to afford the car I want in it for probably weeks. I may pick it up now that they are giving the LaFerrari to you for free.
Having traded my 360 copy of BF4 in for the Xbox One copy, I was completely dismayed, and annoyed, that the game that sold me on early adoption of next gen was basically unplayable. Hopefully this fix comes in soon and makes the game playable again. When I can get into a match it looks gorgeous.
That price difference is looming large. And unfortunately the masses really don't get how much the Kinect adds to the overall value of the system. It's a bit of a problem I think for Microsoft as you either have to be a junkie for gaming news like me or actually experience Kinect to appreciate it. The commercials I've seen just don't do it justice and for most people it looks like the Xbox One is overpriced in comparison to the PS4. Regardless I think both systems will sell fine but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the PS4 dominates the sales charts for a while.
I picked up one of the Zelda special edition 3DS units for my son for Christmas. I can't wait to check out a Link Between Worlds. I would buy a Wii U for that game on big screen from what I've seen of it in review.
As to the Xbox One.. I'm loving mine. Really getting used to the voice commands and they work about 90% or so of the time for me. I think that will get better as I hone my speechcraft with the Xbox. My only complaint has to be with BF4 on the Xbox One. I played it for a month on 360 and now it's fairly broken on X1. Multiplayer is prone to a lot of lag and for days it was basically impossible to even get into multiplayer. Crashing to the dash mid game on occassion or just randomly losing connection to the server. Really had higher expectations.
Forza 5 on the other hand is pretty flawless and fun!
It's really going to depend on how well MS can market Kinect and their strategy to take over as your go to entertainment centerpiece. Having spent a weekend with the Xbox One now, I'd say the average person would absolutely love what it can do at launch. While the cable integration isn't perfect, I love not having to swap inputs to switch from gaming to TV. Or from TV to some streaming service. And the voice control really does work well. Is it 100%? Definitely not. But it's good enough that I'm more than happy giving a command a second time before reaching for a remote control or the Xbox controller.
Last I read was the day one updates is roughly 1gb. I'm a bit worried about how smoothly that's going to go tomorrow when I get home and plug everything in. I can't say I blame the hordes that tried to circumvent that logjam and download it early!
I have this and BF4 pre-ordered for this Friday. Between the 2 they should scratch plenty of gaming itches until Xmas when I expect to get Dead Rising 3 and possibly Ryse. Still have plenty to finish up on the 360 too.
Pretty accurate assessment of the Xbox 360 version. After watching a ton of videos pre-launch, I was stunned when I first loaded BF4 on my 360 and saw how poorly it looked. But in the end, I've enjoyed the hell out of it for a month now and in a couple days will transfer that experience and all my unlocks to the Xbox One version. I strongly considered skipping the 360 version altogether but am now very happy to have played it. Reason being? I now have a true frame of reference for how much better the next gen really is going to be.
While reading this review, it got me thinking a bit about the campaign. Why can Battlefield not utilize their experience with huge maps, destructible environments, etc and mimic Farcry 3 or Borderlands in some ways and make a more open world shooter / sandbox? That may work better for the Bad Company series now that I think of it.. with 4 player co-op using the Bad Company characters would be a great time.
I have the original Kinect and honestly haven't used it much in the past year or more other than a bit of voice commands in Netflix. But what I'm seeing of the new Kinect has me very excited. The functionality looks so much more impressive this time around. I think many people are rushing to pass on it and they will be slinking back in the future at some point when it really turns out to be a killer app for the living room.
I'll be finishing off the campaign for BF4 this weekend. Seeing that there are multiple achievements for different endings in that game I decided I wanted to do one playthrough on 360 and then experience it properly on Xbox One for the second. Not sure I enjoy the campaign enough to go through a 3rd time though.
Some of these are just shocking. I can understand the size of BF4 or Forza 5. The NBA 2k14 is ludicrous. And Lococycle is too big to fit on a standard DVD? Nothing I've seen about that game gives me any impression it's truly 'next-gen'. Some of this makes me think developers are just being lazy and not optimizing at all since they now have tons more space to work with being on Bluray.
I'd probably cancel my Day One edition if MS announced the white model would be available within the next couple months. The console and the controller both look gorgeous in white.
