Probably the right call. It could maybe compete but this game might as well be a new ip and putting a new ip and/or reboot in such a tight spot when Xbox obviously has invested heavily into this game is a ***** move when more open spaces are available is the right call. Better then the dumb crap they did last October with having ninja gaiden 4, keeper and Outer worlds 2 All within a 2 week window. Give the games the chance to breath.
@Kaloudz more so is just an interesting thought experiment. Yes BO7 was filler but it’s clear it did some damage to Cod’s reputation and seeing other games sell very very well makes it interesting.
Kinda wonder if MW4 underperforms like BO7 did what games could maybe outsell it? Forza Horizon 6 maybe? Resident Evil Requiem? Wolverine? Fable maybe? Last year obviously BF6 did but also Monster Hunter Wild and Borderlands 4 outsold BO7 as well.
It’s a shame but it needed to happen. D2 couldn’t continue on in the way it was. Obviously working in D3 right away after the final shape would have been the best option but that’s not the world we live in. Outside of the obviously horrible news of incoming layoffs it’s probably best they focus rn solely on Marathon. It has a good core gameplay loop it just needs vastly better onboarding. Bungie should copy what Ubisoft did with siege from 2017-2019, operation health, improve the onboarding and just hammer out consistently adding good content.
I personally love the Dark Ages even though think that’s more so cause we get so few single player fps games this generation. Though Dark Ages is still an overall slight step down from Eternal. Still is one of my favorite games this generation.
But game pass is super healthy for the games industry….. on a serious note this is probably a good thing. Call of duty is one of if not Microsoft’s main bread winner for its smaller games and single player games so what ever helps the games fair. Will also say this is the reality of the economics of the world. There’s a reason why literally every other streaming service doesn’t do their big budget blockbuster movies day one on streaming services. Games like movies need to make back their budgets with the initial release window then once’s sales slow down bout year later, throw it in on game pass and get a good healthy crowd.
She would be smart to pick his brain. He was the lead of PlayStation during one of its most successful times, he has lessons to learn from. As for game pass yes it’s fair to be critical of it especially if you are a proven industry professional. He knows more than everyone commenting on this post. There’s a reason why Microsoft is literally the only one doing game pass and releasing huge games day one onto game pass. It’s just like why every major movie studio besides Netflix is focusing heavily on theatrical releases, and hell even Netflix is begrudgingly doing some more theater stuff as well.
@Markatron84 Devs and publishers are happy to get that game pass bag after their game released and has made most of the money from initial sales it was going to make. Just like movies going into theaters.
@fatpunkslim he was one of the leads of PlayStation during its most successful times. Xbox has been losing to PlayStation for over a decade dude. He’s critical of game pass cause for literally every developer outside of Microsoft it’s a dumb idea to launch big AAA games on a subscription service. There’s a reason why literally every other film studio besides Netflix has renewed focus on theatrical releases, it’s the same thing with games. Releasing games day one on game pass does limit sales, it’s a proven fact and nowadays companies need to make money to stay alive and while game pass might be profitable, it still hurts sales. On top of game pass does condition Xbox players not to buy games, that’s just the reality for most casual Xbox gamers.
It’s too little too late to Xbox to try to do this BS. They alrighty admitted defeat in 2024. The reality is that Xbox hardware has been ran into the ground. I can appreciate the idea of trying to switch it back but it’s not gonna happen. For better or worse Xbox is fully 3rd party now. Trying to limit sales of their games in the current sales margin era is only going to be putting studios and devs heading on the chopping block.
Xbox did a ***** job of marketing these games and also releasing OW2 in October was stupid as ****. It’s a great game but there’s a lot of great games last year and especially in October. Also will say it seems like Obsidian needed to make OW2 a hair more AAA than it is.
@darylb24 not really for the Xbox considering there isn’t a reason to really own an Xbox nowadays. Sony’s line up still have been better then Xbox in terms of good to amazing games being consistently released vs Xbox’s release cadence being the definition of hit or miss in terms of over crowding games or having nothing.
@Sindayl Sony’s launch line up was a million times better then Xbox’s and over the entire generation Sony has been way more consistent then Xbox has been. Sony had exclusive deals yes but that’s the name of the game with consoles, Xbox tried and failed with this game. Besides 3rd party deals Sony’s 1st and 2nd party absolutely killed it at the ps5 launch.
@darylb24 they absolutely have been better. Sony outside of 2023 has always been super consistent, they may have been over reliant on sequels and remasters but they have been way more consistent than Xbox has. Every year besides 2023 they have released 2-4 fantastic to good games. Xbox may have had more releases in certain years but Xbox’s problem has been consistency. Went from releasing 3 games in fall of 2021 to nothing until fall 2022. Look at years like 2024 when they had nothing of consequence until ***** may.
@fatpunkslim their studio management is horrible when you lay off thousands and shut down studios that literally released your most highly rated game. Yes I realize that Xbox turned things around in fall 2024 but it shouldn’t have taken 4 year into the generation to get too that point. And the problem with Hellblade 2 is that it’s barely a game and is a glorified tech demo and with South of Midnight after 5+ years of development time it needed to be more, its gameplay was middling.
@Sindayl in the beginning of the Xbox one gen yes but are you really gonna sit here and tell me the series consoles had a good lineup and deflect Xbox BS?
@Sindayl no it’s not. Their games may have not been redfall levels of bad they just haven’t had enough. The series launch line up was dog s h i t. Their line up up till 2025 was inconsistent at best. They announced far too many games too early and released games after years of development that were middling in South of Midnight and Hellblade 2. Their studio management has been horrible up till the last few years.
Mean think conversation is pretty mute after Indiana Jones. Xbox has always been capable of having a GOTY candidate their studios just haven’t delivered on their potential. Main reason why it didn’t get a nom is cause of the year and the timing of its release. Do think Fable could potentially be the one but it’s still too early to say.
Strong B. The main downside is the lack of release dates. Game wise everything looked cool. Horizon 6 is gonna be the monster hit without question. Thought beast of reincarnation looked really cook. Kiln seems like a fun side project. Fable seems like it’s finally the big AAA game that Xbox and in particular Xbox game studios should be putting out more often. Love seeing Fable come to ps5 day and date, would be ideal for horizon 6 as well but it’s not.
@BacklogBrad they might be launching an unreal halo mp soon hopefully. The main thing I hope they don’t do with cod is have everything in one app. Have the mp halo game be its own thing with its own team and own balancing patches etc and then have a bunch of single player games and spin offs not beholden too the mp.
@fatpunkslim Xbox doing timed exclusives is dumb as hell. It’s important for Xbox to have as much reach for their games at launch as they can with the strategy Xbox is doing.
@BacklogBrad the one thing where I could see this model working out is if they do a completely separate line be service F2P PvP halo game that has separate balancing and is completely separate then single player experiences like Halo CE. Can see a scenario where halo studios just updates the multiplayer game separately and then they can do a bunch of mainline single player entries and spinoffs.
Yes vg chartz isn’t the most reliable source but the real numbers being in this ballpark aren’t shocking. Xbox hardware is an utter failure from a sales perspective. You need good quality exclusives to sell consoles and Xbox just doesn’t have that anymore.
@Titntin exactly this. People right now are putting way too much faith in Fable and playground as of now and like you said we haven’t seen enough of it.
Too early to say. 1st off no way in hell the halo remake gets a nomination. 2nd off while unfortunately FH6 probably will be good enough to have a GOTY level score it’s not gonna get a nomination. So as of now it’s down to Fable and Eday. I don’t think Eday is going to be in the running but I hope I’m wrong and the coalition brings the horror aspects back and it’s amazing. That leaves fable and I don’t think enough people are speaking the truth about this game which is that we have no idea it’s going to turn out. Playground is a racing team and switching genres like this is no easy task, this game has also had some development issues do too how long it’s taken to make. Then there’s the real challenge which is the insane amount of big games that are coming from or appear to be GOTY caliber. GTA 6, RE Requiem, Pragmata, crimson desert, 007 first light, onimusha, Lego Batman, control resonant, and more I’m missing and we don’t know about.
@BAMozzy by cod standards it’s absolutely a flop out of the gate. Yes I would hope BO7 would outsell BO6 year to date in its launch month, I’m talking about the charts when both games launched. Even being on game pass the month BO6 launched it was already the 3rd best selling game of 2024. Yes BO7 has outsold a lot of other games this year, but that’s the expectation cause if effing COD. The fact that COD hasn’t outsold games like MH Wilds or BL4 that has softer tails isn’t good. Yes of course with games it’s about the tail end and not just out of the gate but it’s an awful start. All measurable metrics show BO7 has had a bad start. Low player reception and critical reception. Insane drop in players on Steam and double digit drops in sales overall by double digits. None of this is good.
@BAMozzy BO7 is not out performing BO6 dude. Love to see Cod and activison being knocked down a couple of pegs. Yes EA isn’t much better of a company but they put the work in on BF6 and deserve the credit and success for making it such a great game.
