DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations, the first major DLC for the bombastic shooter, launches today onto Xbox Series consoles (along with PC and PS5). It should have been a day of celebration for the team at id Software, a chance to revel in reviews and give themselves a proper good pat on the back.
Instead, it's reported id Software lost half of its staff as part of Xbox's 3,200 job cuts. Senior Gameplay Systems Programmer Michael Maynard posted on LinkedIn that "roughly 50% of the company was let go today".
"I was part of the team (roughly 50% of the company) that was let go today. (I was there for OVER 20 years! RAGE through DOOM: Dark Ages) Sad but, I've been doing this (video games) for over 40 years so, not a huge surprise to me. Just really sad that this is how Id Software, the PIONEER/INNOVATOR of FPS action games is relegated to just another "reorganization" of assets."
This is a result of the proposed Xbox Reset that aims to address the business' content portfolio, platform and how it operates. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has spoken about her three aims before, and how ZeniMax will face "reductions" shifting focus onto "higher priority projects".
DOOM: The Dark Ages is the third instalment in a hugely successful effort to revitalise the storied DOOM franchise. Revelations looks set to make the experience even better with 10-15 hours of new content and and has been building a decent amount of hype.
