Yes, sorry... we're talking exclusives again. Everyone at Team Xbox keeps getting asked about them!
The latest word is from Xbox boss Asha Sharma, who was questioned on the topic in last night's Fortune interview. She didn't really have much to add compared to what we've heard already, but we thought we'd share the quote anyway.
Sharma mentioned here that although Xbox wants its games to be "everywhere", it's "hard to find examples of platforms out there that don't have exclusive services and content". She then teased that more exclusives will follow "as the business is healthy", which she admitted isn't "particularly" the case right now.
“Look, I think that we are the number 2 publisher in the world, and when you do that, you want your games to be everywhere. You're stronger when the world plays with you. At the same time, we're increasingly becoming more of a platform, and it's hard to find examples of platforms out there that don't have exclusive services and content.”
“And so, this is a journey for us. Our business isn't particularly healthy, as you noted. So we're starting by introducing 1 or 2 signature exclusives, and as the business is healthy, we will look to try and do more.”
There's nothing particularly surprising in here, although the bit about introducing more exclusives "as the business is healthy" is picking up some attention on social media (to be honest, we wouldn't suggest reading too much into it).
Xbox's Matthew Ball teased earlier this week that he's already aware of the games that Xbox is planning to make exclusive, so barring any changes in strategy (or if Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution completely flop on Xbox consoles), it sounds like more exclusives are definitely in the works for the future.
Anyway, let's hope that's the end of the exclusivity talk for now - at least until we get some concrete details on what's next for the program going forward. It's all a bit too vague at the moment!
